Wedu supports women leaders in Asia through mentorship, leadership development, and financial support. 

**Wedu** is a not-for-profit social enterprise on a mission to nurture the next generation of women leaders in Asia. Founded in 2012, Wedu was born out of a desire to address the vast gender leadership gap that persists globally—and is especially stark in Asia, where it is projected to take 189 years to reach full gender parity, compared to the global average of 131 years. Wedu envisions "a world where half of all leaders are women," and works toward this by removing barriers to leadership and enabling women to rise through access to community, capital, and capability.

**HISTORY AND MISSION**

Wedu began with a fundamental insight: that the barriers to women’s leadership are not solely external, but deeply internalized, often rooted in cultural, familial, and social expectations. Over more than a decade, Wedu has developed a community-centered model that supports women at various stages of their leadership journeys—whether they are just discovering their potential or advancing complex career or civic goals.

Wedu’s consolidated mission is to empower women leaders through:

**PROGRAMMES**

Wedu’s approach is both high-touch and scalable, combining personalized mentorship with technology-enabled leadership learning.

**Global Mentorship Programme**

This flagship program has supported over 1,500 women leaders (Rising Stars) with guidance from more than 1,700 mentors across the world. These mentorships focus on self-awareness, goal setting, network expansion, and resilience. Since inception, Wedu has facilitated over 90,000 hours of mentorship and more than 2,400 mentorship matches. As of 2024, 76% of participants say they attribute the successes on their leadership journey to the support they received from Wedu​.

**Introduction to Leadership (ITL) Course**

Wedu’s self-paced ITL course strengthens self-awareness, goal clarity, and agency—particularly among women who face structural and cultural barriers to leadership. Informed by over a decade of programming and global research, the course is contextualized for Asian women and integrates self-reflection, identity formation, and leadership development. By 2025, Wedu aims to reach 25,000 women with multilingual and multimodal versions of this course, scaling up to one million women by 2030 in partnership with The Agency Fund​.

**Income Sharing Agreement (ISA) Programme**

Through its innovative Income Sharing Agreement (ISA) model, Wedu enables women to finance their university education and leadership development without upfront costs. This model aligns repayment with income, ensuring financial flexibility and minimizing risk for the individual. As of 2024, Wedu brought this ISA program fully in-house, increasing operational efficiency and sustainability​

**Women’s Leadership Academy (WLA)**

Wedu has been a key partner in regional programs like the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Women’s Leadership Academy. Through mentorship and community-building, this initiative fosters strategic leadership among emerging changemakers across ASEAN.

**IMPACT AND REACH**

Wedu’s programs have demonstrated measurable impact:

- 75% of mentees report an increased sense of self-belief and confidence in expanding their leadership networks.
- Participants have achieved key milestones including career promotions, launching social ventures, and civic engagement.
- Wedu’s community spans over 30 countries, with a growing digital ecosystem and partnerships across the education, tech, and development sectors.
- Wedu aligns its impact with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), where the highest concentration of community engagement and initiatives are represented.

**ORGANIZATIONAL GROWTH AND FUTURE PLANS**

In 2022, Wedu commissioned Bain & Company to conduct a Geographic Expansion Study, assessing market attractiveness and Wedu’s ability to succeed across prospective countries. Based on this analysis, priority countries for expansion—where both factors ranked high—include India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Cambodia, Myanmar, and Nepal were identified for selective expansion. Wedu is now acting on these recommendations by doubling down on our focus in South and Southeast Asia.

In response to major social, political, and economic shifts across South and Southeast Asia, Wedu has identified three concurrent crises affecting women leaders in the region: the Climate Crisis, the Care Economy, and persistent barriers to Economic Empowerment. To ensure our programmes remain relevant and responsive, our External Strategic Priorities for 2025–2027 are focused on directly addressing these challenges. By 2027, we aim to enable 1,000 women leaders to drive climate-resilient solutions; shift how society and women leaders view unpaid care work, recognizing it as a critical factor in advancing women’s leadership; and enhance the economic empowerment of 1,000 women leaders, particularly those leading Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), through capacity-building, education financing, strategic partnerships, and community support.

Wedu will continue to challenge both structural exclusions and internalized limitations faced by women. By integrating self-reflective leadership learning with long-term community and capital support, Wedu aims not just to close the gender gap—but to redefine leadership itself.

Allies Against Slavery builds platforms and partnerships that accelerate data-driven solutions to human trafficking. 

Human trafficking is a hidden problem that thrives in the shadows of society. Myths and misconceptions are pervasive, and data is unreliable. As a result, victims aren’t identified, traffickers aren’t prosecuted, and solutions aren’t data-informed or well-coordinated.

But that is changing. Allies Against Slavery harnesses data to illuminate and eradicate human trafficking. Our tools help allies in the fight to identify victims, coordinate care, and take informed action. 

Our vision is clear: to ensure that every community across the United States has the data it needs to combat and prevent human trafficking. But we cannot achieve this vision alone. Allies Against Slavery

Wezasha Impact empowers marginalized youth with skills to gain employment or start their own businesses.

Solomon and James met in 2008, working as mentors for young leaders and entrepreneurs in secondary schools. In the due course of their work, they noticed that their local communities had an under-addressed problem. Every time they walked around their childhood villages, they were struck by the high school dropout rates, unemployment, and meager incomes of youth. This was the life their parents had lived, and if nothing changed, it is the life their children will most likely live. Thousands of youths drop out of the formal school system annually and they could have been one of them.

Wezesha means “to enable” in Swahili language. Founded as a peer youth volunteer initiative in 2010, Wezesha Impact is a registered not for profit organization that started operating fully in 2014. Since then, Wezesha Impact has been dedicated to equipping youth with the essential skills and tools for entrepreneurship and work, with the aim of ensuring that they can thrive socially and economically. 

We have implemented programs across east, central, north, and southern Uganda. The organization has partnered with 100 TVETS and 25 Community Based Organisations across Uganda, including refugee-led organizations. In addition, Wezesha Impact co-leads a loose coalition of 13 grassroots NGOs under the umbrella name of the "Africa Coalition for Social Impact." The reach and impact of Wezesha Impact is significant. Between 2014 and 2024, Wezesha Impact worked with over 15,700 youth. An external impact evaluation of alumni of Wezesha Impact’s programs that was commissioned by Livelihood Impact Fund and conducted by BFA Global, found that 88% of the youth surveyed were actively participating in the labour force. In addition, graduates surveyed earned an average of USD300 more than the control group per annum. Graduates were also more likely to report that their incomes were sufficient to support themselves.

 The organization's mission is to improve entrepreneurship and employment outcomes of youth in Africa through skilling and enterprise development.

Our goal is to empower 100,000 youth over the next three years by providing market-relevant skills training and connecting entrepreneurs to market opportunities. Our model is focused on three key areas:

1.	Skills and Enterprise Academy: Offers practical learning experiences to equip young entrepreneurs with essential skills for starting, managing, and growing their businesses.

2.	Enterprise Growth Lab: Provides technical support, mentoring, and follow-up services to improve the performance and survival rates of small enterprises.

3.	Markets for Youth: Works to increase the purchasing and influencing power of rural youth in the agricultural market and facilitates connections between small enterprises and larger firms to create market opportunities.

We co-implement these interventions in partnership with formal vocational schools, non-formal training initiatives that work with Youth. These co-implementation partnerships ensure that youth receive a more holistic hard skills and soft skills education experience. Where needed, we engage the services of specialized expertise to provide tailored technical support to youth entrepreneurs.

This integrated approach ensures that youth are equipped with the skills, support, and market access needed to succeed in their ventures and actively participate in their communities.

Program Activities

Signing MOU with partner Vocational Schools

We work in partnership with Vocational Training Institutions. Once we identify a viable Vocational Institute, we reach out to the leadership and speak with them about the Program. The institute is required to expressions interest through filling out an expression of interest form. Once selected we sign the MOU and signals formal partnerships, and we proceed to engage the Youth of the vocational Institute.

Youth Outreach, Call for Applications and Selection: 

The purpose of the youth outreach is twofold. Firstly, it aims to raise awareness and generate excitement among young people about the program and its value proposition. Secondly, it seeks to facilitate their application to participate in the programme. During the outreach sessions, interested youth are informed about the program, its purpose, benefits, and format, and encouraged to participate. Application forms are distributed for the youth to apply, and mentors provide support to assist youth with the application process. 

ii. Design and Preparation: 

The design and preparation of the training and mentorship phases is a crucial step in ensuring that the programme's goals are met. Tailored training materials are designed to ensure that the trainers have all the necessary resources needed to deliver the training. The training materials are designed to be interactive, engaging, and tailored to the needs of the participants.

 iii. Training Sessions: The sessions are a set of experiential learning sessions that seek to empower young people with the skills and knowledge for life and work and to develop innovative business ideas. The training is entirely action oriented and youth-led, with mentors on hand to introduce new tools and methods. The young people are responsible for all decision-making and define and design the elements of their ideas and enterprises. The trainings are entirely about learning by doing. This approach allows for focused attention on each group of participants, ensuring that they receive the necessary support, guidance, and mentorship to develop innovative solutions to address community issues. 

 iv. Mentorship and linkages: The Mentorship program consists of multiple phases that aim to identify young people with the potential to create community change projects. During the first phase, teams focus on ideating and planning well thought-out solutions and committed teams. Teams and mentors will go into the field to meet target audiences, stakeholders, partners, suppliers. At the end of this phase, the 1st pitch will be organized to select and ward the teams with well-thought-out ideas. In the next phase of mentoring, the goal is to turn ideas into action. Youth build out their solutions. In addition, youth with enterprises will be organized in business improvement groups and receive tailored technical support from both in house staff and outsourced expertise over two-year period. 

v. Awards: The Wezesha Impact Skill and Enterprise awards is a platform where young people can showcase their innovative ideas and enterprises. The aim is to bring together young people from diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and celebrate their achievements. Judges are invited from different stakeholder groups, including government, civil society organizations, private sector, and academia. The judges evaluate the presentations based on the innovativeness of the idea, impact, feasibility, sustainability, and scalability. The awards recognize the hard work and innovative thinking of young people and encourage them to continue developing their initiatives. The above activities are co-implemented in conjunction with Youth Business Fellows from Wezesha Impact and Instructors from Vocational Institutions.

For the next 3 years (2025-2027) we plan to implement the following Goals and activities,

Key Result 1: 7,000 youth in vocational training secure dignified employment through starting a business or finding jobs. 

We will equip youth in their final year of vocational training with skills and tools for entrepreneurship. The program experience is delivered in established vocational training centres as an add-on to the hard skills training offered by the vocational training centres. The program experience is delivered weekly (4 hours of teaching and mentoring) in the final year of vocational training, then followed by 6 months of individual mentoring. 

Key actions will include:  

a) Building partnerships with formal and informal training centers to deliver Wezesha Impact’s practical learning experience through Social Innovation and    Entrepreneurship Clubs. 

b) Training vocational instructors and youth business fellows to mentor youth. 

c) Organizing youth competitions and exhibitions. 

d) Linking youth to market information. 

Key Assumption: We assume a minimum 50% success rate. Thus, in 2025 to 2027, we will work with a total of 14,000 youth in vocational training and ensure that 7,000 (50%) secure dignified employment.

Key Result 2: 3,000 out-of-school youth secure dignified employment through starting a business or finding jobs. 

We shall equip out-of-school youth with skills and tools for entrepreneurship. The program experience primarily caters for out-of-school youth who are unemployed. The programme is delivered for youth in community-based youth groups or groups of youth that we mobilize individually. The program experience is delivered weekly (4 hours of teaching and mentoring) for 6 months, then followed by 6 months of apprenticeship with a local artisan and then followed by 6 months of individual mentoring. 

Key actions will include: 

a) Building partnerships with artisans and community-based organizations to deliver Wezesha Impact’s practical learning experience. 

b) Training community mentors and youth business fellows to mentor youth. 

c) Organizing youth competitions and exhibitions. Linking youth to market information. 

Key Assumption: We assume a minimum 50% success rate. Thus, in 2025 to 2027, we will work with a total of 6,000 out-of-school youth and ensure that 3,000 (50%) secure dignified employment. 



Wezesha Impact

myAgro is an award-winning, nonprofit social enterprise helping smallholder farmers in West Africa move out of poverty.

In West Africa, there are more than 60 million smallholder farmers – many of whom live on less than $2 per day. These farmers face a number of challenges that keep them in a cycle of poverty. First, they lack access to secure places to save money. This means at planting time, they are unable to purchase high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and other farm inputs. Because many smallholders in West Africa are dependent on one rainy season per year, their yields and income are vulnerable to climate change as rains become less predictable and temperatures rise. Lastly, many smallholders lack access to the information and training they need to improve soil fertility and increase their yields.

Since 2012, myAgro has provided farmers with a savings tool, high-quality inputs, and the training and support they need to increase farm productivity. myAgro farmers are equipped to improve their yields and income, ensuring their family’s food security and livelihood. The myAgro model includes:

- Mobile Layaway Technology: Farmers save money little by little to purchase myAgro packages. They make payments using mobile money or scratch cards (similar to buying mobile phone credit).
- High-Quality Farm Inputs: Farmers select from rainy and off-season packages of high-quality seeds and fertilizer, tree seedlings, or poultry – which are delivered within or very near villages.
- Climate-Smart Agricultural Training: Farmers receive in-person agriculture training on microdosing fertilizer, organic composting, intercropping, and more – leading to increased soil fertility and higher yields. 
- Year-Round Call Center Support: myAgro Call Centers provide farmers with real-time mobile support to answer questions, including calls made to every farmer to support them during planting season.

The myAgro model creates a powerful impact. Over the last five years on average, myAgro farmers across Mali and Senegal have grown 130% more food and earned $156 more annually than control farmers. For a farmer making $2/day, this represents a 21% increase in annual income.

Because farmers are able to reinvest this income in their farms for the next season, myAgro’s market-based approach to improved food security creates an impact that is sustainable. And because our model is built on mobile technology, it is scalable and replicable.

Importantly, myAgro provides a pathway for women farmers to overcome gender barriers and increase household income. We design our model, packages, and training with women’s needs at the center. In 2024, 70% of all farmers served were women.
