This donation is made by Jason Gray, Ian Gray, and Spencer Gray, all originally from Great Falls, MT, in memory of their grandfather, Lieutenant Frank Orville Gray. He took command of F Company during the battle Gouesnou and, and according to his memoir Grasshopper Fox, lost one of his men, Sgt. Lynn, trying to take the hill at Kergoas.

My uncle,  Julian W. Jarvis, from Bladensburg, Maryland USA, landed in Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion in June 1944.  He fought in France all though that summer, and was killed in action August 1944, age 19.

The City of Gouesnou is building a memorial in tribute to the American Heroes who fell on its territory during the summer of 1944.

The City of Gouesnou is located in Brittany, in the far Western France. In the vicinity of Brest, a port city whose harbour was at the time one of the most important in the country, our city particularly suffered during World War II. On August 7, 1944, the first day of the siege of Brest by the Eighth Army, 43 innocent people were murdered by German troops in the hamlet of Penguérec : this was the largest massacre of civilians perpetrated in Brittany during the War.

During the following days and until the beginning of September 1944, probably more than 210 G.Is belonging to the 2nd and 8th Infantry Divisions of the US Army fell in Gouesnou, in particular during the battles of Bourgneuf-Fourneuf and Kergroas.

**Every year, the City of Gouesnou honor hero soldiers and civilian victims, because here in Gouesnou, we consider that it is our duty to remember the past for the sake of history and transmission, particularly to the youngest generation.** So, the elected officials and residents of Gouesnou, in close collaboration with various associations, the local university and schools, strive to maintain and make accessible to as many people as possible the history of the Second World War, its victims and in particular the soldiers who fought to the point, for some, of losing their lives.

In order to make sure that we never forget and to avoid the recurrence of past tragedies, the City of Gouesnou has been multiplying initiatives : annual tributes to soldiers and victims, financing of historical research, organization of commemorative events for the general public, publication of a comic book.

**In 2025, the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, the City of Gouesnou and the local Association Les Amis du Patrimoine has decided to show, in an even stronger way, its respect and gratefulness towards the American soldiers who fell during the summer of 1944 for its Liberation and that of all of France.** Our project which got started last January, involves building a memorial in their honor, representing a life-size G.I., sitting on blocks of stone, holding his rifle in his hands. Behind him stands a monumental doorway symbolizing freedom and transition, the passage from darkness to light, the heavy sacrifice of these men who came from across the Atlantic to drive out the enemy and help us regain our Freedom. This monument will honor the memory of each of these men and will offer their families a true place where to recollect.

**We would like to inscribe the names of all the soldiers who fell in Gouesnou on this memorial. For that purpose we continue to study, with historians, academics and volunteers, all available archives.** We are also fortunate in being helped in our work by members of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Fourndation, a contact made thanks to the American Society of Le Souvenir Français.

The inauguration of the Gouesnou's US Memorial is planned for next November. On this very special day, we hope to see the presence of the soldiers' families, as well as all those who contributed to its achievement.

Promoting the work, knowledge of the artist and preservation of the Cezanne sites in Aix-en-Provence for next generations.

The Société Paul Cezanne—founded in 1998 by the artist's great-grandson, Philippe Cezanne, as a tribute to art historian, John Rewald, author of the artist's catalogue raisonne, first published in 1996—is dedicated to:

- promoting and preserving the work of Paul Cezanne and the sites he painted in and around his native Aix-en-Provence, 
- maintaining the revised online catalogue raisonne, available to all for free at www.cezannecatalogue.com.

With the renovation of Cezanne's family home in Aix, the Jas de Bouffan, the Société is now seeking partners to help fund the creation of a new research center devoted to the artist, Le Centre Cezannien de Recherche et de Documentation, which will open in Summer 2025. 

2025 is the year of Cezanne throughout Aix—from a major monographic exhibition at the Musee Granet to city-wide events, programs, and scholarly convenings, this year will mark a new chapter in the artist's ever-growing impact on people around the world. 

In september 2025, "Odyssée Cezanne" a symposium with leading Cezanne specialists is as well open to subscription. 2 days of immersion in Paul Cezanne's restored family bastide, an opportunity to get a closer look to the Grand Salon where a wall painted by Cezanne as a young artist was discovered in august 2023!

These coordinated efforts, across academic and general audiences, will ensure Cezanne's legacy for generations to come, in all corners of the globe.

In response to the massive destruction of cultural heritage, the world has decided to come together.  Created in 2017, ALIPH is the only global fund that is solely dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage in conflict areas. ALIPH is a unique international cooperation initiative designed to meet the challenge of protecting cultural heritage in conflict areas.  To carry out this mission, the foundation finances preventive measures, emergency interventions and concrete post-conflict rehabilitation projects, all around the world. ALIPH's three areas of intervention are:

 post-conflict  actions to enable local populations to once again enjoy their cultural heritage.

An international study centre for textiles, textile crafts, and dress, worldwide and from prehistory to the present day.

The Textile Research Centre (TRC) is a knowledge centre set up in 1991 as an independent foundation. Since 2009 it is housed at Hogewoerd 164, in the centre of historic Leiden, The Netherlands. Here it has the use of an exhibition space, a large depot, offices and workrooms. The basic aim of the TRC is to give the study of textiles, dress, and accessories their proper place in the field of humanities and social sciences, but also in the context of crafts and craft education. The TRC does so by providing courses and lectures, carrying out research and by the presentation of textiles and dress from all over the world. The two main focal points of the TRC are (a) dress and identity: what people wear in order to say who they are and (b) textile crafts and technology, both pre-industrial and industrial.

In order to reach its objectives, the TRC houses various collections, of more than 50,000 items, including a Textile and Garment Collection and a Reference Collection for fibres, threads, dyes, weaves, printed and machine embroidered textiles, and so forth. Most of the objects are photographed, and are available online (open access), with detailed information, In addition, research is aided by the TRC’s library (some 6,500 books, a large collection of articles, as well as visual material such as photographs, prints and postcards). Students, designers and academics come from many countries to Leiden to use the TRC’s facilities and to attend workshops and courses.

Les Amis du Château de Rosa Bonheur, was founded following the purchase of the Château de Rosa Bonheur, also known as the Château de By, by the Brault family in 2017. The château, located in Thomery, France, served as Bonheur’s residence for the last 40 years of her life, and its acquisition marked the beginning of a new era in the preservation of the artist’s heritage. Upon acquiring the property, the Brault family discovered thousands of archival documents in the château’s attic, many of which had been untouched for over a century. Recognizing the importance of these discoveries, the Brault family and the organization sought to create an environment where scholars, particularly from the United States, could engage in rigorous research on these newly unearthed documents. We preserve, develop, and promote the assets comprising the Domaine national de Chambord which is on Unesco's world heritage list.

Chambord has aroused admiration and fascination to the world for over 500 years. Placed on France’s first list of historical monuments in 1840, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, it is one of the most breathtaking construction of the Renaissance. Far from being a residential palace or a hunting lodge, Chambord embodies the values of humanism, inventiveness and human genius.

Preserving this heritage means constantly questioning how it can be made accessible to the widest possible audience. With this objective in mind, each year new developments and innovative projects are presented to visitors, a rich program of events punctuates the life of the estate, and ecological actions are implemented. The estate is also developing a strategy to diversify its own resources, notably by reviving its vocation as a food-producing farm.

Chambord’s projects are structured around four development priorities: Chambord cultural and artistic, Chambord educational and social, Chambord sustainable and agricultural, and Chambord innovative. The Vasa Museum showcases the uniquely well-preserved 17th-century warship Vasa. 

The Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet), located in Stockholm, Sweden, is a world-renowned institution dedicated to preserving and presenting the 17th-century warship Vasa, one of the most significant maritime archaeological discoveries ever made. Established in 1990, the museum was created to house and display the Vasa after it was salvaged in 1961 from Stockholm harbor, where it had rested since its fateful sinking in 1628. The ship, nearly fully intact, provides an unparalleled window into Sweden's history, maritime engineering, and daily life during the era of its construction.

The museum's primary goal is to preserve Vasa for future generations while expanding knowledge about the ship, its time, and its cultural significance. Since its opening, the Vasa Museum has become one of Sweden's most visited cultural destinations, attracting over a million visitors annually from around the globe. Its mission is not only to protect and maintain the physical artifact of Vasa but also to serve as a hub for education, research, and international exchange.



The Vasa Ship: An Icon of Preservation

The Vasa’s story begins in 1626, when it was commissioned by King Gustav II Adolf during Sweden’s period as a burgeoning European power. Unfortunately, due to design flaws and over-ambitious construction, the ship capsized and sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. Preserved in the cold waters of the Baltic Sea, it was rediscovered in 1956, salvaged five years later, and meticulously restored to its current state. The museum offers an unparalleled glimpse into 17th-century shipbuilding techniques, art, and daily life, supported by thousands of artifacts recovered alongside the ship.



Current Activities: Focus on Preservation

Central to the museum’s ongoing mission is the preservation of the Vasa, which poses complex technical challenges due to its age and the unique stresses caused by its original construction and subsequent centuries underwater. Most prominently, the museum is currently undertaking a ground-breaking project to replace and modernize the ship’s support structure—a vital initiative to ensure its long-term survival.

The original support system, installed in the late 20th century, is no longer adequate to meet the evolving needs of the ship’s preservation. Studies have shown that the Vasa’s wooden structure is under constant strain from its own weight, and over time, microscopic movements have threatened the ship’s stability. To address this, a comprehensive and cutting-edge replacement project is underway. This involves designing a dynamic support system capable of adapting to changes in the ship’s weight distribution and structure while minimizing physical stress on the fragile timbers.

This initiative exemplifies the museum’s commitment to integrating scientific innovation with cultural heritage preservation. Teams of engineers, conservators, and maritime archaeologists from Sweden and abroad are collaborating to ensure the solution reflects the latest advancements in materials science and conservation techniques. The project is scheduled for phased implementation, allowing the museum to remain open to visitors while safeguarding the ship.



Donations to the museum are accepted through the Vasa Rediviva Foundation. The foundation was originally created in the 1960´s to receive incoming donations for the salvage of the ship. Today, the Vasa Rediviva foundation is entirely dedicated to financing the Vasa Museum´s efforts to construct a new support system for the ship. All donations to the foundation are tax-deductible in accordance with Swedish law.    



Research and Education

In addition to the ongoing support structure project, the museum remains a leader in maritime archaeological research. It collaborates with universities, cultural institutions, and independent scholars to study not only the Vasa itself but also the broader context of 17th-century maritime culture. Topics include the social history of shipbuilding, the geopolitics of Sweden’s empire during the Vasa era, and the conservation challenges of waterlogged wood.

The museum’s educational programs are central to its mission. It offers guided tours, lectures, and interactive workshops for students, families, and researchers. Digital initiatives, such as virtual tours and online databases, have expanded the museum’s reach, making its resources accessible to audiences worldwide.



Future Plans

Looking ahead, the Vasa Museum aims to continue enhancing its preservation techniques and expanding its role as a global leader in cultural heritage. The completion of the new support structure will serve as a model for other institutions managing fragile artifacts. Additionally, the museum plans to develop new exhibitions that explore the global connections of 17th-century Sweden, shedding light on trade, warfare, and cultural exchange during the Vasa era.

Dhody Research Institute examines medical history to address health challenges and fosters curiosity through education.

The Dhody Research Institute (DRI) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit dedicated to scientific and museological research,  consultation, and education. Through partnerships with historic, scientific or medical institutions, DRI conducts  research with historical medical collections to improve  21st –century human health. The Institute also provides consultation to institutions and researchers who seek to create museums or exhibitions with a medical historical dimension or maintain their collections of anatomical/pathological anatomy. The DRI also engages in accessible science communication through various social media channels to promote STEM engagement, encourage careers in STEM fields, and engage in science dialog with our wide audience.

The Fondation Pro-mahJ contributes to the development of the collections of the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaisme in Paris.

The Fondation pour le musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme (Pro mahJ), in Paris, was created in 2003 on the initiative of Claire Maratier, daughter of painter Michel Kikoïne (1892-1968), to promote the work of artists from the École de Paris and mobilize its resources in support of the mahJ. As an essential supporter of the enrichment of the mahJ's collections and the promotion of its heritage and activities, the foundation is committed to supporting contemporary artists whose work is rooted in the École de Paris and resonates with the mahJ's collections.
