The Battle for Brest was one of WWII's bloodiest, yet least known, albeit one of its most important operations.  Those that fought there in August-September 1944, will never be forgotten. As the son of one of the veteran's who fought at Brest, I will never forget his sacrifice, those of his comrades from the 2ID and those of the people of Brest and Brittany. May their memories be eternal.

Ventfort Hall Association is a nonprofit organization focused on arts, culture, or humanities. It is based in Lenox, MA. It received its nonprofit status in 1997.

Ventfort Hall is an elegant Jacobean Revival mansion built in 1893 for George and Sarah Morgan in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. The estate, located in the heart of Lenox Village, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Ventfort Hall is now a museum dedicated to the history of the period between the Civil War and World War I, known as the Gilded Age, that was a time of transformational change in American social and economic life driven by industrialization, technological innovation, urbanization, the women’s and labor movements, and immigration.

THE GILDED AGE IN LENOX
Ventfort Hall was one of the many grand estates (called “Cottages”) built in Lenox in the late 19th century when the village was a popular resort for affluent urban families. Drawn by the region’s scenic beauty and its legacy as a home to artists and intellectuals, wealthy entrepreneurs and financiers built opulent summer homes in the Berkshires. 

“ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES IN LENOX” 
Ventfort Hall was designed by the prominent Boston architects Rotch & Tilden for Sarah, the sister of J. Pierpont Morgan, and her husband (and distant cousin) George Morgan. It was one of the most distinctive homes built in Lenox, the embodiment of Gilded Age prosperity and taste, characterized by innovative building technology and inspired by European art and craftmanship. The mansion has a red brick and brownstone exterior with slate roof, an elegant porte cochere entrance and a long wooden veranda across the back of the house. Inside, there are 28 rooms, a 3-story great hall and staircase with intricately carved woodwork, a billiard room, and bowling alley. The house was set on 26 acres (the museum now owns 11 acres) with landscaped gardens, arboretum, two gatehouses, a carriage house and stable, and six greenhouses. Ventfort Hall boasted the most modern amenities of its time with central heating (coal-fired boiler and hot air system), plumbing, electric and gas lighting, elevator, burglar alarm, and ventilated bathrooms.

Sarah Morgan died in 1896, only three years after building her beloved home. Following George’s death in 1911, the estate was used as a private home, hotel, and housing for a number of groups.

FESTIVAL HOUSE & THE ARTS
Beginning in the 1950s, Ventfort Hall became Festival House, an affordable hotel and art center that was the first in the region to welcome members of racial and religious minorities. Musicians, artists, dancers, and actors stayed and performed there including folk musician Pete Seeger, playwright Lorraine Hansberry, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, and singer Odetta. When the hotel closed in the early 1960s, the property became the summer ballet camp of the Fokine Ballet where a generation of young people studied dance, music and drama in an idyllic Berkshire setting.

MUSEUM OF THE GILDED AGE
By 1991, Ventfort Hall had fallen into serious disrepair and was slated for demolition. A group of community members formed the Ventfort Hall Association in 1997, and raised funds to purchase and renovate the property which opened as a public museum in 2001. 

Open year-round for tours, as well as lectures, theatrical and musical events, special exhibits, and educational programs, Ventfort Hall brings nearly 11,000 visitors each year to downtown Lenox. 

The popular Tea & Talks lecture series features historians, journalists, and other experts on the multi-faceted history of Gilded Age. Topics have included  women’s suffrage, the growth of the labor movement, the advance of American architecture and landscape design, the rise of the railroads, the Gilded Age in literature and film, and notable women artists and entrepreneurs.

The beautiful six-foot rosewood Steinway piano purchased for by the Morgans in 1895 was returned to Ventfort Hall in 2022 and is now used for concerts and special events. 

HERITAGE TOURISM
Located in the downtown Lenox Historic District close to local inns, restaurants, stores, and theater, Ventfort Hall brings significant tourism business to the town. The property is also a desirable rental site for events and destination weddings, and has hosted major film shoots.

As a heritage tourism site, Ventfort Hall plays a key role in realizing the Town of Lenox’s 2021 Master Plan for economic and community development which cites tourism as its number one engine for growth:

The unique combination of Great Estates, cultural amenities, and the historical New England character of its villages distinguishes Lenox from other popular destination towns…Heritage tourism has helped distinguish Lenox as a destination and, in turn, serves to buoy the Town’s economy. 

The top goals of the Town’s Historic Preservation Plan are: 1) Make historic preservation and community character central to Lenox's quality of life; and 2) Use Lenox's historical identity as a core element of the Town's economic development strategy.

Support our programs and tours so that we can bring the rich and complex history, arts, and culture of the Berkshires to a wide audience. We keep our admission fees reasonable, but they cover only part of the cost of maintaining the property and presenting programs.

Preservation is an ongoing process. A Master Plan, created by Spencer & Vogt Group in 2016, outlines a phased approach to the restoration of Ventfort Hall. Phase Two is currently underway, consisting of major repairs to the chimneys, roof, and tower. Future phases will address further interior restoration, building envelope, and site work.

The City of Gouesnou has just built a Memorial in tribute to the American Heroes who fell here during the summer of 1944.

Dear American Friends,

The City of Gouesnou, population 6.528, is located in Brittany at France's western tip, near the strategic military harbor of Brest. Our city bore witness to tremendous sacrifice during World War II. Two months after D-Day, on August 7, 1944 – the first day of the siege of Brest by General George S. Patton's Third Army – enemy troops murdered 46 people, including 43 innocent French civilians in the hamlet of Penguérec, marking the largest civilian massacre in Brittany during the war. In the following weeks, until early September 1944, your ancestors fought heroically through extremely violent battles to liberate us from Nazi occupation.

Here in Gouesnou, we consider it our sacred duty to honor both hero soldiers and civilian victims, preserving their memory for future generations. To ensure we never forget and to prevent history from repeating itself, our city undertakes numerous initiatives: annual tributes to soldiers and victims, funding for historical research, commemorative public events, and publication of the graphic novel "*Mémoires de chair et de douleur*" ("Memories of Flesh and Pain").

**A Discovery That Changed Everything**

Thirty years ago, in 1994, the City of Gouesnou – with contributions from private French citizens – erected a stele honoring American soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division and 8th Infantry Division who fought here. At that time, we believed only 45 soldiers from these divisions had lost their lives in these battles.

However, groundbreaking research by historian Dimitri Poupon, funded by the City of Gouesnou between 2018 and 2022, revealed a sobering truth: more than 200 American soldiers actually lost their lives here 81 years ago.

**Building a Memorial Worthy of Their Sacrifice**

This past year, the City of Gouesnou decided to demonstrate our profound respect and recognition for all American soldiers who fell for our liberation by constructing a new memorial.

The project required extensive historical research to precisely identify every fallen soldier. Through Thierry Chaunu, president of the American Society of Le Souvenir Français, we connected with J.R. Neubeiser and Richard Azzaro from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Foundation—Society of the Honor Guard. Working alongside Denis Bertin, president of our local association *Les Amis du Patrimoine*, this dedicated team spent eight months reconstructing the battle history and locating these heroes.

Their discoveries were remarkable: the fighting lasted an entire month, American casualties were at least five times higher than previously thought, and soldiers from additional American units beyond the 2nd and 8th Infantry Divisions participated in the battles. Thanks to their tireless, rigorous work, 229 names are now engraved in engraved granite piers, ensuring they will never be forgotten.

**Memorial Inauguration**

The first phase is now complete: on November 16, 2025, the Gouesnou American Memorial was inaugurated in the hamlet of Fourneuf, where the deadliest fighting occurred. The Memorial consists of a monumental gate and granite piers, as well as a kersantite life-size sculpture of an American G.I. created by renowned sculptor Jean-Philippe Drévillon.

Among those present were about a hundred descendants of these heroes and American citizens living in France, soldiers and representatives of veterans' associations. Their presence brought tremendous honor to our town, its officials, and residents.

The inauguration of the Memorial is just one step. We are continuing our work of preserving the memory, as well as conducting research. Thanks to the constant work of our volunteers in the United States and France, new names will also be added to the Memorial pillars very soon!

**What is the musée de Montmartre ?** 

In the heart of Montmartre, this **charming and atypical Museum** is settled in the old houses of the neighborhood. The Museum’s buildings are surrounded by gardens and were where **many renowned artists worked** (e.g., **Auguste Renoir, Emile Bernard, Raoul Dufy**)... You can also see the studio-apartment of **Suzanne Valadon** (the first woman ever admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts).

The **permanent collection** presents the **rich history of Montmartre**, the excitement of its workshops and the **atmosphere of its famous cabarets**, from the Lapin Agile to the Moulin Rouge. The collection includes paintings, posters and drawings by **Toulouse-Lautrec,** **Modigliani, Kupka,** and **Steinlen** among many others.

The Museum also has an area dedicated to the **Chat Noir cabaret**, with an exceptional collection of zinc panels used in the cabaret’s shadow theater and paintings by Steinlen that decorated the Chat Noir.

 Founded in 1994, the Remember Museum is one of the most interesting of its kind. It is housed in an old renovated barn and is comprised mainly of items abandoned by the American First Infantry Division soldiers who once enjoyed "R & R" at the Schmetz' s farm when Marcel was a young boy. The artifacts include personal items given by numerous WWII Veterans from various units. It is a museum with a human dimension, made great by its welcoming environment, its originality, its simplicity. The museum strives to serve as the testimony of our gratefulness towards all the G.I.s who, at the risk of their lives, gave us our freedom back. Because curators Marcel & Mathilde (M&M) are nearing retirement, the museum and its contents will be transferred to the King Baudouin Foundation and a board of directors will manage the future of this great endeavor, while keeping it warm and personal much like M&M themselves. Historical Background of the Organization

Les Amis du Château de Rosa Bonheur, was founded following the purchase of the Château de Rosa Bonheur, also known as the Château de By, by the Brault family in 2017. The château, located in Thomery, France, served as Bonheur’s residence for the last 40 years of her life, and its acquisition marked the beginning of a new era in the preservation of the artist’s heritage. Upon acquiring the property, the Brault family discovered thousands of archival documents in the château’s attic, many of which had been untouched for over a century. These documents included personal letters, sketches, financial records, and other invaluable materials that shed light on Bonheur’s life, work, and influence.

Recognizing the importance of these discoveries, the Brault family and the organization sought to create an environment where scholars, particularly from the United States, could engage in rigorous research on these newly unearthed documents. The historical link between Rosa Bonheur and the United States, where many of her works are held in private collections or sold through auction houses, further motivated the establishment of the AFCRB. The organization’s founders recognized the need to bridge the gap between French and American art scholarship, encouraging transatlantic collaboration to ensure a comprehensive understanding of Bonheur’s artistic contributions.

Mission and Objectives

The core mission of the Les Amis du Château de Rosa Bonheur is to preserve and promote the artistic legacy of Rosa Bonheur. As an organization, it seeks to raise awareness of Bonheur’s work, ensure her rightful place in art history, and foster greater public understanding of her contributions to the development of animal painting, realism, and the broader art community.

The LRE Foundation is a growing international, inclusive network that connects people and organisations dedicated to preserving and valorising the tangible and intangible cultural heritage related to World War II, its memory and meaning. The organisation’s main objective is to make this history relevant and accessible, especially for the younger generations. 

The LRE Foundation promotes diversity by developing a multi-perspective understanding of the history of World War II. As each country had a different wartime experience, it is our goal to present each perspective in relation to each other.

Its main projects are :

- Liberation Route Europe 

A certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe that connects people, places, and events to mark Europe’s liberation from occupation during World War II. 

In order to make the route a physical part of the European landscape, LREF is developing a network of Liberation Route Europe trails that allows new ways of experience the route by hiking, walking, and cycling.

Renowned architect Daniel Libeskind has designed a symbolic family of trail markers called the ‘Vectors of Memory’ that will honour people, places, and stories found throughout the European landscape.

- Europe Remembers

Europe Remembers is an awareness and information platform that brings together commemorative sites and events in a collaborative, inspirational remembrance portal. Europe Remembers seeks to create a global commitment to preserve history and eyewitness memories for future generations, and call for an active participation.

It enables diverse communities to reflect on the complex heritage of World War II from multiple historical perspectives. The aim is to teach, to share experiences, and to encourage mutual understanding of our shared past. With fewer eyewitnesses each passing year, Europe Remembers seeks actively to promote new ways of commemorating and remembering World War II for the future.

- Youth Programme

The LRE Foundation is committed to promoting innovative active remembrance and memory transmission projects targeting the younger generations through the LRE Youth Programme. An essential feature of these initiatives is the inclusion and sharing of diverse experiences, applying a multi-perspective approach to WWII history and remembrance.

With HistoryTreks, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, students of different countries get together to reflect on the history and impact of WWII on their regions with formal and non-formal learning methods, including hiking the Liberation Route Europe and visiting remembrance sites along the way.

In turn, with EASTory through their Eyes and Persecution through their Eyes, young Europeans are invited to learn about personal stories of people who experienced WWII and its consequences across Europe, reflecting on the complexity of such shared history. The ‘through their Eyes’ series combines an online and travelling exhibition with youth events in partner locations and is funded by the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme of the EU.

Our mission is to increase the scope for action of the Nationalgalerie in times of scarce public funding.

The history of the "Freunde der Nationalgalerie" began with a passion for the visual arts, a desire to take risks and the enthusiasm of the founding members - and they continue to shape the actions of the Friends to this day.

Since 1977, the "Freunde der Nationalgalerie" have been a key supporter of the work of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin. 

The aim of the Friends is to increase the scope for action of the Nationalgalerie and its six museums in times of scarce public funding. The annual membership fees make a significant contribution to maintaining the Nationalgalerie as a lively, innovative institution that reflects the production of art from the 19th century to the present day in numerous exhibition projects and collection presentations and communicates this to a broad public.

However, one thing is always important: it is not the friends who decide whether classical or contemporary art, whether established or new, will move into the Nationalgalerie's six buildings. It is the decision of those artistically responsible, it is the wish of the directors that determines what we do. For this is an unbroken principle, the "basic law" under which the association was founded and still operates today: Nothing may be exhibited or acquired by the Friends that does not correspond to the wishes of the directors.

The National Gallery (German: Nationalgalerie) in Berlin, Germany, is a museum for art of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. It is part of the Berlin State Museums. From the Alte Nationalgalerie, which was built for it and opened in 1876, its exhibition space has expanded to include five other locations. The museums are part of the Berlin State Museums, owned by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

The Fondation Pro-mahJ contributes to the development of the collections of the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaisme in Paris.

The Fondation pour le musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme (Pro mahJ), in Paris, was created in 2003 on the initiative of Claire Maratier, daughter of painter Michel Kikoïne (1892-1968), to promote the work of artists from the École de Paris and mobilize its resources in support of the mahJ. As an essential supporter of the enrichment of the mahJ's collections and the promotion of its heritage and activities, the foundation is committed to supporting contemporary artists whose work is rooted in the École de Paris and resonates with the mahJ's collections.
Your support will help preserve one of the finest collections of works of art and objects illustrating the heritage of Jewish culture in Europe and around the Mediterranean, from Antiquity to the present day, preserved and hosted by the musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme (mahJ), as well as strengthening the museum's activities, particularly its educational initiatives. The mahJ is France's largest museum devoted to Jewish art and culture, and a place of reference for education, promoting cultural diversity and combating prejudice and discrimination, for people from all walks of life.

The Dhody Research Institute (DRI) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit dedicated to scientific and museological research,  consultation, and education. Through partnerships with historic, scientific or medical institutions, DRI conducts  research with historical medical collections to improve  21st –century human health. The Institute also provides consultation to institutions and researchers who seek to create museums or exhibitions with a medical historical dimension or maintain their collections of anatomical/pathological anatomy. The DRI also engages in accessible science communication through various social media channels to promote STEM engagement, encourage careers in STEM fields, and engage in science dialog with our wide audience.

American Friends of the Château de Fontainebleau

An international study centre for textiles, textile crafts, and dress, worldwide and from prehistory to the present day.

The Textile Research Centre (TRC) is a knowledge centre set up in 1991 as an independent foundation. Since 2009 it is housed at Hogewoerd 164, in the centre of historic Leiden, The Netherlands. Here it has the use of an exhibition space, a large depot, offices and workrooms. The basic aim of the TRC is to give the study of textiles, dress, and accessories their proper place in the field of humanities and social sciences, but also in the context of crafts and craft education. The TRC does so by providing courses and lectures, carrying out research and by the presentation of textiles and dress from all over the world. The two main focal points of the TRC are (a) dress and identity: what people wear in order to say who they are and (b) textile crafts and technology, both pre-industrial and industrial.

In order to reach its objectives, the TRC houses various collections, of more than 50,000 items, including a Textile and Garment Collection and a Reference Collection for fibres, threads, dyes, weaves, printed and machine embroidered textiles, and so forth. Most of the objects are photographed, and are available online (open access), with detailed information, In addition, research is aided by the TRC’s library (some 6,500 books, a large collection of articles, as well as visual material such as photographs, prints and postcards). Students, designers and academics come from many countries to Leiden to use the TRC’s facilities and to attend workshops and courses.
