My father and other veterans have long passed.  They returned home, said little and lived their lives.  How I wish I knew to ask him of his experience.  Their contribution, their sacrifice was not in vain, and must be continually retold and understood.  

These girls have worked so hard to restore and preserve this small chateau and it's important repository of one of France's first feminist artists - a remarkable endeavor!

The LRE Foundation is a growing international, inclusive network that connects people and organisations dedicated to preserving and valorising the tangible and intangible cultural heritage related to World War II, its memory and meaning. The organisation’s main objective is to make this history relevant and accessible, especially for the younger generations.

- Liberation Route Europe 

A certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe that connects people, places, and events to mark Europe’s liberation from occupation during World War II. 

In order to make the route a physical part of the European landscape, LREF is developing a network of Liberation Route Europe trails that allows new ways of experience the route by hiking, walking, and cycling.

Renowned architect Daniel Libeskind has designed a symbolic family of trail markers called the ‘Vectors of Memory’ that will honour people, places, and stories found throughout the European landscape.

Europe Remembers is an awareness and information platform that brings together commemorative sites and events in a collaborative, inspirational remembrance portal. Europe Remembers seeks to create a global commitment to preserve history and eyewitness memories for future generations, and call for an active participation.

It enables diverse communities to reflect on the complex heritage of World War II from multiple historical perspectives. The aim is to teach, to share experiences, and to encourage mutual understanding of our shared past. With fewer eyewitnesses each passing year, Europe Remembers seeks actively to promote new ways of commemorating and remembering World War II for the future.

- Youth Programme

The LRE Foundation is committed to promoting innovative active remembrance and memory transmission projects targeting the younger generations through the LRE Youth Programme. An essential feature of these initiatives is the inclusion and sharing of diverse experiences, applying a multi-perspective approach to WWII history and remembrance.

With HistoryTreks, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, students of different countries get together to reflect on the history and impact of WWII on their regions with formal and non-formal learning methods, including hiking the Liberation Route Europe and visiting remembrance sites along the way.

In turn, with EASTory through their Eyes and Persecution through their Eyes, young Europeans are invited to learn about personal stories of people who experienced WWII and its consequences across Europe, reflecting on the complexity of such shared history. The ‘through their Eyes’ series combines an online and travelling exhibition with youth events in partner locations and is funded by the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme of the EU.

Historical Background of the Organization

Les Amis du Château de Rosa Bonheur, was founded following the purchase of the Château de Rosa Bonheur, also known as the Château de By, by the Brault family in 2017. The château, located in Thomery, France, served as Bonheur’s residence for the last 40 years of her life, and its acquisition marked the beginning of a new era in the preservation of the artist’s heritage. Upon acquiring the property, the Brault family discovered thousands of archival documents in the château’s attic, many of which had been untouched for over a century. These documents included personal letters, sketches, financial records, and other invaluable materials that shed light on Bonheur’s life, work, and influence.

Recognizing the importance of these discoveries, the Brault family and the organization sought to create an environment where scholars, particularly from the United States, could engage in rigorous research on these newly unearthed documents. The historical link between Rosa Bonheur and the United States, where many of her works are held in private collections or sold through auction houses, further motivated the establishment of the AFCRB. The organization’s founders recognized the need to bridge the gap between French and American art scholarship, encouraging transatlantic collaboration to ensure a comprehensive understanding of Bonheur’s artistic contributions.

Mission and Objectives

The core mission of the Les Amis du Château de Rosa Bonheur is to preserve and promote the artistic legacy of Rosa Bonheur. As an organization, it seeks to raise awareness of Bonheur’s work, ensure her rightful place in art history, and foster greater public understanding of her contributions to the development of animal painting, realism, and the broader art community.

Turnpark Art Space Inc is a nonprofit organization focused on arts, culture, or humanities. It is based in W Stockbridge, MA. It received its nonprofit status in 2014.

TurnPark Art Space is a 16-acre sculpture park and art venue for visitors of all ages, located in the Berkshires region of Massachusetts. It features an outdoor sculpture collection, two indoor exhibition spaces, and a marble amphitheater for outdoor performances. TurnPark offers a unique experience of art and nature within the historical context of a former marble and limestone quarry.

Catharsis Arts Foundation is a non-profit initiated by the sculptor Prune Nourry that supports collaborative artistic creation and enables art to have a long term, positive impact on the women, artists, artisans, and communities who contribute to and inspire the artwork’s creation.

The Foundation encourages the making of artworks with and by underrepresented communities, enabling them to tell their stories. The foundation is inspired by Prune Nourry’s profound belief that art and sculpture can be a tool to recreate balance in a deeply unbalanced world. It will operate globally, with first programs being held in Africa in 2024.

25,490 Jews and 353 Roma were deported from the Dossin barracks on 28 train transports to Auschwitz-Birkenau between 1942 and 1944. Few of them survived the ordeal. Today the old military base is a serene site of reflection and remembrance, a Memorial. In the museum, facing the former barracks, one can immerse oneself in the history of the Holocaust in Belgium. The museum provides testimonies not only of exclusion, discrimination and mass violence, but also of hope and resistance. Reflect on human rights violations, then and now. In the research centre one can find more about the role of the Dossin barracks during the Second World War or about the experiences of a loved one or family member.

The City of Gouesnou has just built a Memorial in tribute to the American Heroes who fell here during the summer of 1944.

Dear American Friends,

The City of Gouesnou, population 6.528, is located in Brittany at France's western tip, near the strategic military harbor of Brest. Our city bore witness to tremendous sacrifice during World War II. Two months after D-Day, on August 7, 1944 – the first day of the siege of Brest by General George S. Patton's Third Army – enemy troops murdered 46 people, including 43 innocent French civilians in the hamlet of Penguérec, marking the largest civilian massacre in Brittany during the war. In the following weeks, until early September 1944, your ancestors fought heroically through extremely violent battles to liberate us from Nazi occupation.

Here in Gouesnou, we consider it our sacred duty to honor both hero soldiers and civilian victims, preserving their memory for future generations. To ensure we never forget and to prevent history from repeating itself, our city undertakes numerous initiatives: annual tributes to soldiers and victims, funding for historical research, commemorative public events, and publication of the graphic novel "*Mémoires de chair et de douleur*" ("Memories of Flesh and Pain").

**A Discovery That Changed Everything**

Thirty years ago, in 1994, the City of Gouesnou – with contributions from private French citizens – erected a stele honoring American soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Division and 8th Infantry Division who fought here. At that time, we believed only 45 soldiers from these divisions had lost their lives in these battles.

However, groundbreaking research by historian Dimitri Poupon, funded by the City of Gouesnou between 2018 and 2022, revealed a sobering truth: more than 200 American soldiers actually lost their lives here 81 years ago.

**Building a Memorial Worthy of Their Sacrifice**

This past year, the City of Gouesnou decided to demonstrate our profound respect and recognition for all American soldiers who fell for our liberation by constructing a new memorial.

The project required extensive historical research to precisely identify every fallen soldier. Through Thierry Chaunu, president of the American Society of Le Souvenir Français, we connected with J.R. Neubeiser and Richard Azzaro from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Foundation—Society of the Honor Guard. Working alongside Denis Bertin, president of our local association *Les Amis du Patrimoine*, this dedicated team spent eight months reconstructing the battle history and locating these heroes.

Their discoveries were remarkable: the fighting lasted an entire month, American casualties were at least five times higher than previously thought, and soldiers from additional American units beyond the 2nd and 8th Infantry Divisions participated in the battles. Thanks to their tireless, rigorous work, 229 names are now engraved in engraved granite piers, ensuring they will never be forgotten.

**Memorial Inauguration**

The first phase is now complete: on November 16, 2025, the Gouesnou American Memorial was inaugurated in the hamlet of Fourneuf, where the deadliest fighting occurred. The Memorial consists of a monumental gate and granite piers, as well as a kersantite life-size sculpture of an American G.I. created by renowned sculptor Jean-Philippe Drévillon.

Among those present were about a hundred descendants of these heroes and American citizens living in France, soldiers and representatives of veterans' associations. Their presence brought tremendous honor to our town, its officials, and residents.

The inauguration of the Memorial is just one step. We are continuing our work of preserving the memory, as well as conducting research. Thanks to the constant work of our volunteers in the United States and France, new names will also be added to the Memorial pillars very soon!

Gouesnou US Memorial (France), in tribute to the American Heroes fallen in the summer of 1944

Our work is directed against Antisemitism and xenophobia. 

The organization is an NGO and located in the small town of Breisach with now 15.000 inhabitants in the southwest corner of Germany on the border to Alsace/France on the Rhine river. The Swiss border is only 60 km to the south. 

The organization was founded in 1999 with the aims 1. to purchase the former Jewish school building (built before 1690), 2. to renovate it and 3. to use it according to its historical importance. The building is located in the former Jewish lane, in walking distance to the former synagogue and the older of two Jewish cemeteries. Jews had lived in this quarter between 1640 and 1940. 



The mission according to the statutes is to develop new relationships with Holocaust survivors and their descendants and to work together for a full documentation of the histories of about 250 Jews who had lived here before the Nazi persecution began 1933. They had either become refugees or victims of one of the first deportations in October 1940 to Southwest France (Camp de Gurs). Of those deported the majority became in 1942 and after victims of the deportations from France to Auschwitz concentration camp. 



Again and again groups of Holocaust survivors and their descendants returned to what was once their "Heimat" to commemorate the Jewish community which had been destroyed. They became part of a network: the "Overseas members" or "Friends of the Blue House" and could follow the organization making progress in building up a vibrant institution. During each of those group visits to Breisach the program was partially focussing on interaction with young German people (students), most of them have never met a Jewish person.

 

After finishing the renovation of the historical building in 2003 a 15 year period of volunteer work began with lectures, concerts, guided tours and research. From 2017 on the Blue House staff began to professionalize its reach out to young people and improve its pedagogical work using the archival sources for teaching personal stories. This was made possible with the financial support of a Foundation helping to create a part-time  job for a mediator for historical education and cultural transmission.

Since 2019 the museum can be visited: "Jewish life in Breisach in 1931" where the everyday life of a Jewish family with two children can be experienced by exploring a small number of objects on display and listening to radioplays (German/English). An exhibition is permanently installed in the Blue House garden (created by the House of the Wannsee Conference Berlin) dealing with the history of the deportation of the southwestern German Jews to Camp de Gurs in 1940 in the context of the Nazi occupation of France (German/French). Information about the history of the Jews of Breisach (1640-1940) was added and about how the Nazis turned Breisach into a dangerous place for Jews after 1933. A special focus was directed on the role of the Breisach railway bridge, across which seven trains with more than 5600 Jews were deported on October 22, 1940 after having been arrested in their houses, expropriated, taken to a train station and forced into a train directed towards the city of Freiburg and from there to Breisach and across the river Rhine into occupied France. A second grant by a Federal institution (2020-2022) was used to deepen the historical research, to create materials for teaching and to design a digital handbook as a short introduction to the Gurs deportation using the example of the Breisach Jews (as one of 138 places where Jews were rounded up). In summer of 2023 forty Jewish guests from five countries, their families originating in Breisach, shared the celebration of 20 years of the Blue House. A week-long program was prepared and executed with many highlights especially guests meeting students from Breisach and Freiburg. 



The organization has turned in the application for another grant (April 2024 - December 2025) to bring together French and German students to explore the differences of their narratives about the years of Nazi occupation of Alsace. For the 80th anniversary of the end of WW II, the installation of a democratic Germany in 1945 and the development of strong friendly ties between France and Germany a special celebration is in planning for the Breisach bridge. French and German students will work together in a Dance project (under the guidance of Battery Dance Company NY director Jonathan Hollander) creating choreographies and a special choreography for the Breisach bridge. With their participation the young generation will support the plans for a new railroad "bridge for the future" and put emphasis on the strong bond between the youth of both countries.

**What is the musée de Montmartre ?** 

In the heart of Montmartre, this **charming and atypical Museum** is settled in the old houses of the neighborhood. The Museum’s buildings are surrounded by gardens and were where **many renowned artists worked** (e.g., **Auguste Renoir, Emile Bernard, Raoul Dufy**)... You can also see the studio-apartment of **Suzanne Valadon** (the first woman ever admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts).

Open Collective Europe's mission is to promote projects in the EU with the following charitable purposes: - increasing access to educational resources and training,  - creating a positive social impact and  - developing tools to improve civic participation within cities or communities. Future perspectives At the beginning of 2022, we shared our desire to grow the Open Collective Europe community. Our goal is to make the community more vibrant, supported and resilient. Linden Place is a historic estate museum and arts center that tells one family's 200-year journey through American History. The 1810 Federal-period mansion and accompanying ballroom, sculpture garden, and outbuildings were built by one of America's wealthiest and most influential families. Over the next two centuries, descendants of the family occupied this home. They were slave traders, merchants, tycoons and artists. Today, this historic estate is a museum at the center of the region's cultural and artistic life.

The West Lake Art Conservation Center (WLACC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historic and artistic works. Established in 1975 as West Lake Conservators and nationally recognized for its conservation expertise, we specialize in the treatment of paintings, frames, murals, works on paper, and photographic materials. In 2022, the practice transitioned to nonprofit status to expand its mission to include public education, cultural stewardship, and community engagement.

A museum of art and history with a representative survey of Dutch art and history since the Middle Ages, the Rijksmuseum has on display 8,000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. The RKD is one of the world's leading documentation and research institutes. As a knowledge institute we work in collaboration with museums, heritage institutes, universities and private institutes. Our staff are involved in research, publications and organising events. We manage unique archives, documentation and photographic material and the largest art historical library on Western art from the Late Middle Ages to present, with the focus on Netherlandish art. Our collections contain not only paintings, drawings and sculptures, but also cover monumental art, modern media and design. The collections are present in both digital and analogue form (the latter in our study rooms). The Vereniging Rembrandt (Rembrandt Association) is an independent membership-based organization that supports art acquisitions for Dutch museum collections great and small, and with large and small gifts, too. It was founded in 1883 by a small number of art lovers who wanted to help save important works of art for the Netherlands. Today, the Vereniging Rembrandt has over 17.500 members, both domestic and abroad, and has helped acquire well-over two thousand works of art for over 125 museums. Among these acquisitions are true icons of art, such as Johannes Vermeer's "Milkmaid" in the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt's Self-portrait  in the Mauritshuis, and Henri Matisse's perhaps finest paper cut-out: "La perruche et la sirène" in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Headquartered in New York City, Aspies For Social Success, AFSS is a peer-run organization that provides support and social groups, as well as cultural events, to adults 18 and over who have either been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome or an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), believe they might be on the Autism Spectrum, or who for other reason have difficulty with social communication, sensory processing, or executive functioning. AFSS is working to build a more inclusive community for individuals who otherwise may not have many opportunities or be able to find others with whom to socialize. We do not charge our members any fees, and our income comes exclusively from fundraising.

**The Problem**

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 1 in 68 individuals in the U.S. is somewhere on the autism spectrum. Because adulthood constitutes most of the human lifespan, the majority of these individuals are adults. In New York City, where AFSS is based, this corresponds to a population of nearly 100,000, with closer to 200,000 in the Greater New York area, most of which have not yet been identified. A common misconception is that individuals with autism prefer to be isolated and are not interested in either friendships or romantic relationships; in fact, for most adults, nothing could be farther from the truth. Consequently, there is a need for venues where adults on the spectrum can meet others who live with the same challenges, discuss and share the difficulties that they face in various aspects of their lives in a supportive environment, and be able to simply socialize with people who perceive and interact with the world in a manner similar to their own. Also, even though unemployment statistics for autistic adults are greatly overestimated (roughly half of AFSS group members are employed at some level), they are still higher than for any other disability. As such, many will not be able to afford the kinds of group and cultural activities that AFSS is working to provide. These costs can only be met through outside contributions and donations.
 
**Our Approach**

AFSS support groups, currently held in rented venues, allow members to discuss issues of concern to them in a group setting among other adults living with similar challenges. Each meeting starts with a specific theme chosen by the group. Past themes have included community, relationships, dating, isolation, and employment-related difficulties. For example, we have had discussions on what it means to be part of a community and on what an ideal community would be like. We then allow the conversation to evolve during the session, allowing members to relate their own personal stories to the group.
  
AFSS social groups encourage members to go out in public with others like them and to feel more a part of and accepted in a community, and meet at different restaurants and locations throughout the New York City area. This also provides an opportunity for the greater community to see that we are no different from anyone else and fully capable of participating in society in spite of our minor differences. These groups provide a sense of community for individuals who otherwise may not have many suitable opportunities to socialize, as well as somewhere to go, on a regular basis, with a relaxed, comfortable, judgment-free atmosphere where people can be themselves amongst others sharing similar difficulties and interests. 
  
AFSS cultural events provide opportunities for our groups to attend a variety of artistic, scientific, and cultural events. These take place in museums, galleries, exhibitions, theaters, and other venues throughout the NYC area.

The Van Gogh Academy is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the study of Vincent van Gogh’s life and art.

Founded and presided over by Dr. Wouter van der Veen—an accomplished Van Gogh scholar with 25 years of high-level experience—the Academy aims to deepen and disseminate knowledge about Van Gogh’s work and legacy.

Our mission is to advance research, preserve our collections, encourage innovation, and provide an immersive approach to the various places where Vincent van Gogh lived and worked. We uncover and analyse documents and artworks to deepen our understanding of Van Gogh’s environment, times and influences. 

Moreover our ambition is to make Van Gogh’s life and work accessible to a broad audience through high-quality educational programs, workshops, and scholarly initiatives.

Inspired by his relentless pursuit of truth in art, we foster a spirit of discovery to preserve his legacy in its most authentic form.

Dhody Research Institute examines medical history to address health challenges and fosters curiosity through education.

The Dhody Research Institute (DRI) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit dedicated to scientific and museological research,  consultation, and education. Through partnerships with historic, scientific or medical institutions, DRI conducts  research with historical medical collections to improve  21st –century human health. The Institute also provides consultation to institutions and researchers who seek to create museums or exhibitions with a medical historical dimension or maintain their collections of anatomical/pathological anatomy. The DRI also engages in accessible science communication through various social media channels to promote STEM engagement, encourage careers in STEM fields, and engage in science dialog with our wide audience.

MOWAA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, expansion, and celebration of West African arts and culture.

At the core of MOWAA’s vision is a commitment to inspiring the next generation of creatives in West Africa. By re-evaluating the concept of the museum in a 21st century African context, MOWAA seeks to ensure relevancy to contemporary artists, artisans and cultural professionals.

Associação Hagadá (Hagadá Association) was created on July 25th 2019. Its objective is to promote and carry on the activities necessary for the creation, establishment and operation of an institution with museological functions in Lisbon - The Tikvá Museu Judaico Lisboa (Jewish Museum of Lisbon). Also, it aims to enrich and preserve the associated cultural heritage, display the Jewish experience and culture, as well as the role of Portuguese Jews in the history of Lisbon and Portugal, and in the Diaspora. Associação Hagadá (Hagadá Association) will perform the following main activities: - Creation and establishment of the Tikvá Museu Judaico Lisboa (Jewish Museum Lisbon); - Ensure that the Tikvá Museu Judaico Lisboa (Jewish Museum Lisbon) fulfils its role as a museum; - Promote, organize and publicise exhibitions, talks, debates and conferences; - Promote the collection and preservation of sources essential to the awareness of Portuguese Jewish history and the Jewish cultural heritage existing in Portugal; - Promote actions intended to encourage citizenship and human rights; - Promote actions intended to combat all forms of discrimination, based in particular on race, ethnicity and religious intolerance and appreciating cultural and religious differences as the heritage of Humanity; - Promote actions intended to preserve the Jewish cultural heritage existing in Portugal; - Perform educational activities; - Support and encourage research and the development of Jewish studies in Portugal and about Portugal; - Promote publications related to Jewish cultural heritage.

To serve as the testimony of our gratefulness towards all the G.I.s who, at the risk of their lives, gave us our freedom back.

 Founded in 1994, the Remember Museum is one of the most interesting of its kind. It is housed in an old renovated barn and is comprised mainly of items abandoned by the American First Infantry Division soldiers who once enjoyed "R & R" at the Schmetz' s farm when Marcel was a young boy. The artifacts include personal items given by numerous WWII Veterans from various units. It is a museum with a human dimension, made great by its welcoming environment, its originality, its simplicity. The museum strives to serve as the testimony of our gratefulness towards all the G.I.s who, at the risk of their lives, gave us our freedom back. Because curators Marcel & Mathilde (M&M) are nearing retirement, the museum and its contents will be transferred to the King Baudouin Foundation and a board of directors will manage the future of this great endeavor, while keeping it warm and personal much like M&M themselves.
