The Innocence Project was founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University to assist prisoners who could be proven innocent through DNA testing. More than 350 people in the United States have been exonerated by DNA testing, including 38 who pleaded guilty to crimes they did not commit and 20 who served time on death row. The Innocence Project provided direct representation or critical assistance in more than 200 exonerations.   The Innocence Project’s full-time staff attorneys and Cardozo clinic students provide direct representation or critical assistance in most of these cases. The Innocence Project’s groundbreaking use of DNA technology to free innocent people has provided irrefutable proof that wrongful convictions are not isolated or rare events but instead arise from systemic defects. Now an independent nonprofit organization closely affiliated with Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the Innocence Project’s mission is nothing less than to free the staggering numbers of innocent people who remain incarcerated and to bring substantive reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment. Our story begins with **Father Frank O'Loughlin**, our Executive Director, whose unwavering dedication to migrant workers spans over 50 years of advocacy and service.

​Father Frank’s journey with the Mayan people began in the early 1980s, when he served as a parish priest in Indiantown, Florida. During this time, he encountered Mayan migrant workers who were not just laborers, but refugees escaping the horrors of the Guatemalan genocide, seeking sanctuary and a new life.

​Before this, in the 1970s, Father Frank was deeply involved in the farmworker movement alongside Cesar Chavez. Inspired by Chavez’s tireless fight for justice, Father Frank worked in solidarity with the United Farm Workers, advocating for fair wages and better conditions for migrant workers. This experience strengthened his lifelong commitment to standing with marginalized communities and fighting for their rights.

In 1992, this powerful connection led to the founding of the Guatemalan-Maya Center. Our mission was clear from the start: to assist, advocate for, and provide services to Maya refugees and others in need, focusing on areas such as education, health, immigration, cultural continuity, and family preservation. We honor and support the Maya culture as we embrace the new environments in which we all live, empowering families to thrive in their new homes.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a volunteer-based, non-government organization whose goal is to prevent animal cruelty through education, animal sheltering and advocacy, based in Quezon City, Philippines.

PAWS also runs an animal shelter for over 300 cats and dogs rescued from cruelty or neglect. There, animals are rehabilitated in the hope of finding them new homes and a second chance at a good life.



There is also a low-cost clinic that provides veterinary services to the indigent community, including spay and neuter (kapon).

**The Defending Our Neighbors Fund is powered by everyday people, like you, stepping up and building a vital lifeline to support our immigrant neighbors, loved ones, and communities against injustice.**

We all deserve to be treated fairly and with dignity. Yet every day, immigrant families are forced to navigate a complex and punishing immigration system alone, **without access to legal counsel**. Even young children, the most vulnerable members of our communities, are facing trained prosecutors without anyone by their side.

**This is why the Defending Our Neighbors Fund exists.** 

Today, there are more than 6 million U.S. households who have a family member at risk of detention or deportation. Right now, the federal government is funneling $170 billion of our taxpayer dollars to dramatically increase enforcement in our cities, all while slashing funding for legal service organizations who provide critical support for immigrants and make sure they have access to a lawyer. The Defending Our Neighbors Fund is a rapid-response effort to meet this urgent need for legal representation head-on, working to ensure families have access to life-saving legal support, and when possible, bond assistance.

As people's due process rights continue to be violated — affecting tens of thousands of people who are immigrants, children, and even U.S. citizens and green card holders — the need for legal counsel is skyrocketing. Studies show that in 2024, there were more than 2.5 million cases in immigration court where people did not have legal representation. Having access to a lawyer is often the difference between a family staying together or being separated indefinitely. 

To meet the ballooning demand in this moment, the Defending Our Neighbors Fund is quickly deploying high-impact grants to trusted organizations providing legal and, when possible, bond assistance to communities in need, this includes organizations that are:

- Serving communities with large immigrant populations
- Serving communities in legal deserts, and
- Serving communities near some of the country’s most active immigration detention and processing centers

**In this moment of division, we must all come together to defend our neighbors.** 

Supported by United We Dream and the ACLU, the Defending Our Neighbors Fund is hosted by Abundant Futures Fund (a fiscally sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors), and aims to raise and deploy $30 million to grassroots organizations to meet this crisis with action and care.

When Open Development Cambodia (ODC) launched in 2011 it was the first independent open data website in Southeast Asia. The open data movement is based on the simple premise that data collected for public interest should be publicly available without restrictions. Information or data in the public domain should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish.
 
 
 
 The mission of ODC is to make data and objective, politically-neutral information accessible to all people, in both English and the Khmer language – it is critical that data is provided in the local language. We identify topics where the availability of information is more limited and work to bridge those gaps by gathering and collating data from a wide range of sources. All our content is freely available on ODC’s secure online platform in order to enhance the informed decisions of citizens and other stakeholders.
 
 
 
 The information on the ODC platform covers a number of different topics, ranging from social and environmental issues to public services and economic matters. ODC strives to present data through user-friendly and interactive formats, such as digital maps, which allow users to compare multiple map layers of interest to them.
 
 
 
 The platform has an average of over 60,000 unique monthly visitors. In addition to maintaining its website, ODC regularly conducts outreach activities – workshops, hackathons, and visits to rural areas – in order to show people how to access and use the data.
 
 
 
 ODC registered with the Ministry of Interior in Cambodia as a local non-governmental organization in 2015. ODC has grown to become an important resource in Cambodia’s civic tech ecosystem. It is a great model for other developing countries to consider as a way of sharing knowledge with all citizens.

Shishu Mandir is an organization for giving poor, neglected and traumatized children a base for a life in dignity. To achieve this, a home with a family-like atmosphere, a school with small entities of class formations and a vocational training center for school drop-outs were created. The main aspect of bringing up these youths lies on liberating them from the various social stigmas, by treating them with respect, warmth, and understanding. LICADHO works closely with grassroots communities, human rights defenders and activists to monitor, document and investigate human rights abuses in Cambodia. A Cambodian non-governmental organisation, LICADHO has been at the forefront of efforts to protect civil, political, economic and social rights in Cambodia, and to promote respect for these rights by the Cambodian government and institutions.

Since its establishment in 1992, LICADHO's work has changed to meet the demands of the dynamic human rights situation and the evolving needs of communities and activists in Cambodia. **The Problem**

Undocumented survivors are among the most under-served, otherized people in the world, standing at the harrowing intersection of disenfranchisement based on socioeconomics, race, ethnicity, immigration status, sexual orientation, and gender status. Mental health care is a significant need for this population, with many traumatized by abuse. However, psychological studies show that mental health is historically not a “community priority” for this group, and foundation and grant funding for this need has been decreasing. Barriers to mental health care for this population also include individual survivors’ lack of financial resources. 
  
Mental health assessments carry an importance beyond psychological wellness. The assessments can culminate in thorough psychological evaluation reports, which serve as evidence in survivors’ immigration cases.  Through Inviolate Initiative, comprehensive mental health assessments are provided so that undocumented survivors can protect their own due process rights, present their immigration cases fully, and begin to heal and thrive.

By expanding access to psychological evaluations in the context of the immigration cases of undocumented survivors of domestic abuse and trafficking, Inviolate Initiative recognizes that assessing and documenting mental traumas and conditions is essential to due process and mental health. Inviolate partners with nonprofit immigration organizations that are providing legal services to applicants for immigration relief, supplementing their services with Inviolate’s mental health assessments and evidentiary reports.

The Homeless Resource Center offers rest and resources to those experiencing homelessness in Lawrence, Kansas.

The mission of the Homeless Resource Center is to offer a daily refuge with basic services to provide physical and emotional comfort for people who are experiencing homelessness.

Open Doors English is an English as a Second Language Program for adults in Ithaca, NY. All students are welcome!

Open Doors English's mission is to “offer English classes so that adults can participate fully in community life, advocate and care for themselves and their families, and pursue their goals.” Our student body is comprised of immigrants, refugees, asylum-seekers, farm workers, and temporary residents. All students are welcome, and ODE has served 200-300 students per year since opening in 2019. 

At Open Doors English, students:
- Develop or improve their ability to speak, read, write, and listen in English
- Build the confidence needed to communicate effectively in everyday life situations.
- Learn communication and language skills to perform in current and future jobs
- Acquire advanced language skills and training to pursue educational opportunities
- Increase their understanding of American culture and society
- Receive assistance and make connections to other community resources and agencies
- Connect with people, organizations, and events in the Ithaca area
- Have fun while learning
- Find belonging in a community of international friends

CAN mobilizes people of faith and faith communities throughout the DC metro area to advocate and organize for immigration rights. An endowment protecting the Los Cedros cloud forest forever.

Held in the mists of the Ecuadorian Tropical Andes, a scientific station works with local communities to protect a cloud forest known as Los Cedros (“The Cedars”). The station encourages artists, educators, and researchers to connect with and learn from Los Cedros, whose walking palm trees and old growth lift racket-tail hummingbirds and critically endangered brown-headed spider monkeys into the clouds. Decades of interdependent artwork and scientific discovery from the station—including over 100 publications—factored into the 2021 [decision of Ecuador’s highest court](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/dec/02/plan-to-mine-in-ecuador-forest-violate-rights-of-nature-court-rules-aoe) to ban extractive practices in the forest by upholding Los Cedros’ constitutional rights to exist and to thrive.

This ruling set a monumental precedent for worldwide Rights of Nature efforts. Yet mining companies continue to apply pressure to Los Cedros communities and Ecuadorian authorities—and if mining comes to pass in Los Cedros, it will devastate one of the most biodiverse and endemic forests in the world. Home to thousands of wildlife species, Los Cedros spans 6000 hectares of mostly primary forest habitat. There, the threatened spectacled bear builds a tree bed to feast on aguacatillo berries (tiny avocados), and the elusive jaguar has left her tracks on the banks of waterfalls. In the abundant green shadows, undiscovered fungi, insects, and orchids flourish. A glass frog hides his heartbeat under a leaf.

As one of the rare places where humans can still drink directly from cascading rivers, this refuge also protects numerous watersheds crucial to downstream communities. So, the Los Cedros Fund will prove that the station’s approach of sustainably partnering with the cloud forest and surrounding communities is best for Pachamama—all of Mother Earth, including humans—in the long term.

The Los Cedros Fund is growing an endowment for the cloud forest to be financially self-sufficient. Honoring all who’ve protected the forest for decades, the Los Cedros Fund aims to offer this new watershed of perennial support to the forest to keep artistic, educational, and scientific collaborations flowing.
