While building Every.org I chatted with Chris Blattman, a UChicago poverty/conflict researcher who designed READI Chicago, which provides men prone to commit gun violence with jobs, therapy and opportunity.

It's a high-leverage intervention - a small number of people are responsible for most gun violence, so helping them greatly benefits their communities. With the firepower of his research, the clarity of its impact, and the growing scale of the project, it's my way of helping make Chicago, my brother's home, even greater than it already is.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pee Dee Area have been serving youth ages 6-18 for more than 60 years. Today, we operate seven club sites in Florence, Hartsville, Hemingway, Johnsonville, Lake City, Pamplico, and Timmonsville with more than 700 kids passing through our doors each day.

Our mission is to inspire and enable all youth, from throughout the Pee Dee area, especially those that need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. Clubs fill the gap between school and home with a welcoming, positive environment in which kids and teens have fun, participate in life-changing programs, and build supportive relationships with peers and caring adults. Using a nationally recognized, evidence-based programming, our priority outcomes include

- **Academic Success:** Graduating from high school ready for college, trade school, military, or employment
- **Good Character & Leadership:** Being an engaged citizen involved in the community, registered to vote, and modeling good character

Workshop Learning is a nonprofit educational organization, founded in 2010 in Philadelphia to serve under-resourced youth

Through real-world learning, robust community, and personal growth, Workshop Learning empowers young adults to pursue a life of security, connection, and purpose. 

We design learning experiences in which students hone their sense of self, shape a vision for what comes next, and build the skills they need to make that vision a reality. While we believe this is critical to flourishing for all students, our work centers on youth and emerging adults from the most marginalized communities. These students' dreams and talents are too often overlooked and they often feel alienated and left behind by education systems. 

Serving young people ages 14-24, Workshop Learning works in three spaces.  First, we assist the School District in operating and supporting a high school (the Workshop School).  Second, we’re piloting a new alternative postsecondary program (Workshop U). Third, we work with other educators, schools, and systems that want to adapt or learn from our approach.

Fondazione Marea aims to be a catalyst for positive transformation for Sicily, harnessing the resources and skills of Sicilians who are scattered around the world. We are a community of Sicilians by birth, adoption and at heart, united by the desire to build a prosperous future for our homeland.

Marea's Vision:  A Sicily with opportunities to stay, return, and arrive. We envision in the long term a dynamic, stimulating, resilient, forward-looking Sicily, attractive to new talent, capable of maximizing its potential, a gateway to the Mediterranean.

Marea's Mission: We aggregate resources and skills of the Sicilian community around the world, to nurture the birth and growth of social enterprises in Sicily.

We enable every person, wherever they are, to actively contribute to the future of Sicily through the generative power of philanthropic investment and social entrepreneurship.

The Foundation is based on three fundamental pillars:

1. Strengthening the link between Sicilians of the diaspora and the changemakers in Sicily
2. Supporting social enterprise ventures 
3. Promoting local development

Our goal is to build an ecosystem of social entrepreneurship, creating job opportunities to break the cycle of depopulation and generate systemic change for the economic, social and cultural development of Sicily.

THE BIRTH OF MAREA 

Marea is a shared dream, a project born out of love for Sicily and the desire to transform this land into a place of opportunity, hope, and growth. It represents an extraordinary community of people with the courage to believe in this dream and the determination to realize it. The idea became a reality in June 2024, starting from zero with a call from Sicily that reached every corner of the world.

The Fondazione Marea-Ente Filantropico ETS was established on December 18, 2024 (video summary) thanks to a six-month Capital Campaign that saw the extraordinary participation of 423 Pioneers (individual donors), the involvement of 3 Sicilian Community Foundations,  €423,000 raised, and the creation of an initial Foundation endowment of €150,000. 

FONDAZIONE MAREA’S IMPACT 

The Foundation aims to turn the tide on Sicily's depopulation phenomenon by significantly reducing the number of people leaving the island in the long term, stopping the talent drain by retaining and attracting young Sicilian graduates and talent, creating more job opportunities in Sicily by reducing NEET status, and developing the philanthropic sector in Southern Italy by closing the gap in the investment by foundations compared to Northern and Central Italy.

UNDERLYING PROBLEMS

Fondazione Marea addresses two main problems:

1. Sicily is endangered. The lack of job opportunities is causing the depopulation of Sicily, forcing young people with high potential to emigrate and condemning many others to NEET status.

According to SVIMEZ - Association for the Development of Industry in Southern Italy data, every year 50,000 people leave Sicily, and the percentage of talented young graduates leaving Sicily in search of opportunities has increased fivefold over time, from 6 percent in 2001 to 32 percent in 2021. In 2080, it is estimated that Sicily will have only 2.8 million residents. Moreover, the Migrantes Foundation 2024 report reveals Sicily to be the Italian region with the highest rate of expatriates, more than 826,000 people. These numbers tell of a veritable diaspora. What is happening profoundly changes the demographic, social, cultural and economic structure of the territory, impoverishing the community and effectively desertifying the Mezzogiorno.

2. The lack of investment by foundations. Foundations play an important role in modern societies: they are private nonprofit institutions that act in the public interest. Because of their history and wealth, they are capable of making a significant impact and can contribute to the growth and development of communities.

Southern Italy has historically suffered from a persistent shortage of foundations, due to the limited circulation of capital and the lack of a philanthropic culture in the area. Meanwhile, Northern and Central Italy benefit in many ways from the presence in their regions of foundations that invest in local businesses and nonprofits, acting as intermediaries between the public and private sectors.

STRATEGY

Fondazione Marea's strategy is based on transforming the diaspora from a threat into an opportunity. It is an innovative model that gathers economic resources and volunteer expertise from the Sicilian community scattered around the world and channels them in a concrete way to support projects with a potential for high social impact. Following the principles of Venture Philanthropy, the Foundation identifies ideas and projects of new social enterprises, Third Sector entities established in corporate form, which play a crucial role in solving social and environmental problems, to respond to the emerging needs of local communities and promote collective welfare. This is currently still a pioneering corporate structure for our local context, with only 63 social enterprises registered in corporate form in the Third Sector across Sicily as of April 11, 2025, compared to 3,334 social cooperatives.

After a regional open call, Marea accompanies each project with incubation and acceleration programs and access to strategic resources. It is Sicilians themselves –  those who have emigrated, returned, stayed, are native or adopted – who supply both a startup fund and the “talent bank,” becoming mentors to the new social entrepreneurs. These new social enterprises generate lasting value in the local area, creating jobs and improving the quality of life. With careful monitoring of results and indicators for measuring social impact, the Foundation collaborates with other Third Sector entities, companies and institutions to complement this commitment by Sicilians and for Sicilians.

THE STARTUP SUPPORT PROGRAM 

Fondazione Marea's startup support program is a structured approach to nurture the birth and growth of social enterprises in Sicily. It is composed of pre-incubation and incubation paths, aimed at both embryonic projects and businesses that have already been established for less than a year. The program offers tailored training, mentoring, access to strategic resources and a dedicated mentor to guide participants through the various stages of development. The goal is to create a social innovation ecosystem, engaging Pioneers (the Foundation's donors), experts, entrepreneurs, networks and investors to generate lasting and systemic impact in Sicily. The program also includes an accelerator track for more mature social enterprises, with the goal of supporting the scalability and replicability of these projects.

The first edition of the startup support program will be launched in May 2025 and will have two simultaneous tracks: one incubation and one acceleration.

The program will be aimed at social enterprises or ETS already established (but not more than 1 year old) or individuals/groups of people who have concrete proposals for social enterprises with implications for the Sicilian context and legal and operational headquarters (including future) in Sicily. Projects can deal with areas that respond to issues and challenges of the Sicilian region such as environment (water risk, drought and fire, agriculture), social (inclusion, immigration), or underutilized tangible and intangible resources.

After a promotional roadshow across Sicily to connect with people potentially interested in participating, at least nine projects (one for each province in Sicily) will be selected to participate. 

The incubation track will last three months in a hybrid mode (online and in-person) with dedicated coaches and access to vertical mentoring sessions. There will be 3 in-person sessions of 3 days each  with theoretical lectures, workshops, hands-on labs, masterclasses, 1-to-1 planning moments, and testimonials.

After the final event to present the social enterprise ideas to the entire Marea Pioneers’ community, projects that meet the requirements for potential growth will be eligible for funding opportunities from the Foundation.

Concurrent with the incubation track will be an acceleration program: A number of social enterprises established for at least 1 year will be selected during an open call based on their track record, impact generated, and potential for scalability and replicability. Over three months, the enterprises will participate in an accelerator with customized training, coaching and mentoring tailored to their needs and those of the market.

Unlike other startup programs, after the formal incubation or acceleration journey, each project will receive long-term assistance through 3 years of mentorship to support the development at the most critical time of a new venture.

Human Development Fund

myAgro is an award-winning, nonprofit social enterprise helping smallholder farmers in West Africa move out of poverty.

In West Africa, there are more than 60 million smallholder farmers – many of whom live on less than $2 per day. These farmers face a number of challenges that keep them in a cycle of poverty. First, they lack access to secure places to save money. This means at planting time, they are unable to purchase high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and other farm inputs. Because many smallholders in West Africa are dependent on one rainy season per year, their yields and income are vulnerable to climate change as rains become less predictable and temperatures rise. Lastly, many smallholders lack access to the information and training they need to improve soil fertility and increase their yields.

Since 2012, myAgro has provided farmers with a savings tool, high-quality inputs, and the training and support they need to increase farm productivity. myAgro farmers are equipped to improve their yields and income, ensuring their family’s food security and livelihood. The myAgro model includes:

- Mobile Layaway Technology: Farmers save money little by little to purchase myAgro packages. They make payments using mobile money or scratch cards (similar to buying mobile phone credit).
- High-Quality Farm Inputs: Farmers select from rainy and off-season packages of high-quality seeds and fertilizer, tree seedlings, or poultry – which are delivered within or very near villages.
- Climate-Smart Agricultural Training: Farmers receive in-person agriculture training on microdosing fertilizer, organic composting, intercropping, and more – leading to increased soil fertility and higher yields. 
- Year-Round Call Center Support: myAgro Call Centers provide farmers with real-time mobile support to answer questions, including calls made to every farmer to support them during planting season.

The myAgro model creates a powerful impact. Over the last five years on average, myAgro farmers across Mali and Senegal have grown 130% more food and earned $156 more annually than control farmers. For a farmer making $2/day, this represents a 21% increase in annual income.

Because farmers are able to reinvest this income in their farms for the next season, myAgro’s market-based approach to improved food security creates an impact that is sustainable. And because our model is built on mobile technology, it is scalable and replicable.

Importantly, myAgro provides a pathway for women farmers to overcome gender barriers and increase household income. We design our model, packages, and training with women’s needs at the center. In 2024, 70% of all farmers served were women.

Rondine Cittadella della Pace is an international organization dedicated to promoting peace and dialogue through educational and cultural initiatives. Founded in 1997 in the town of Arezzo, Italy, the organization focuses on empowering young people from conflict zones worldwide by offering them trasformative experiences that foster mutual understanding, leadership, and conflict resolution skills. The mission of Rondine is to prevent future conflicts and build a culture of peace by training a new generation of leaders who will promote intercultural dialogue and peaceful coexistence in their home countries. The organization's activities aim to create long-term peace by addressing the root causes of conflict, such as intolerance, lack of understanding, and cultural divisions.

**1. World House**

The **World House** is Rondine’s most significant initiative. It serves as a residential community where young people from areas of conflict live together for 18 months, studying, sharing experiences, and engaging in personal growth. The project brings together students from opposite sides of conflicts—such as Israelis and Palestinians, or young people from the Caucasus and Africa—who would otherwise never meet. The goal is to create a space for mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence. Participants undergo training in conflict resolution, leadership, and intercultural dialogue, with the aim of preparing them to return to their communities as ambassadors of peace. This initiative represents a microcosm of the organization's broader goal: to change the culture of conflict into one of collaboration and understanding.

**2. Quarto Anno**

The **Quarto Anno** program is a special initiative for **Italian high school students**. It offers a year-long opportunity for students in their fourth year of high school to live and study in an international, intercultural environment. The program focuses on the development of leadership skills, critical thinking, and conflict resolution, with a specific focus on building peace and understanding. Students participating in Quarto Anno engage in both academic studies and practical activities that encourage them to work across cultural and national divides. This initiative fosters a deeper awareness of global issues, especially conflicts, and trains students to become future leaders who are equipped to handle challenges in a peaceful and constructive way. Quarto Anno also involves direct interaction with students from diverse backgrounds, allowing participants to practice and apply what they have learned in real-world scenarios.

**3. Sezione Rondine**

The **Sezione Rondine** project aims to bring the **Quarto Anno** experience to other **Italian high schools** across the country. This initiative extends Rondine's peace-building programs to schools beyond its main campus in Arezzo, allowing students from various regions of Italy to participate in the Quarto Anno’s trasformative year-long peace and leadership training. In this decentralized model, Rondine collaborates with high schools to offer students the opportunity to engage in the same curriculum of conflict resolution, intercultural dialogue, and leadership development that is central to the Quarto Anno program. Students in Sezione Rondine receive the same educational experiences as those at Rondine’s central location, empowering them to become active peace builders in their own communities while forming a network of young leaders across Italy who are committed to building a more peaceful society.

**4. Leaders for Peace**

In December 2018, seventy years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and a century after the end of the First World War, Rondine’s students and alumni launched an Appeal to the entire world to take a first step towards decisive, positive shift concerning human rights at the global level. With the “Leaders for Peace” campaign, Rondine asks each of the 193 Member States to devote a symbolic sum from its defense budget to the training of as many young, global peace leaders. These new leaders will be able to intervene in the world’s most complex conflict scenarios, promoting the development of pacified social and political relations. Rondine also asks each UN Member State to consider including education on human rights in national education systems, integrating it with the Rondine Method for the creative transformation of conflicts. The objective is the gradual extinction of war contexts from the world through the affirmation of a new culture capable of unmasking the false concept of enemy, and of spreading among all citizens the skills to positively transform conflicts by integrating the teaching of the Rondine Method with human rights.

Rondine Cittadella della Pace, through these initiatives, addresses the critical need for education, dialogue, and leadership development in conflict regions. The organization’s projects aim not only to provide young people with the tools they need to become effective peace builders but also to change the broader narrative around conflict, promoting cooperation over division and dialogue over violence. Through its educational programs, Rondine continues to build a global community committed to fostering lasting peace.

SINA (Social Innovation Academy)is a multi-award-winning model empowering marginalized youth and African refugee communities to unleash their potentials and become social entrepreneurs. By creating their own solutions to the challenges they face, participants transform from passive aid recipients to active drivers of their own futures. As SINA's model continues to scale across different African countries through a replication approach, its impact continues to grow. It has reached eight communities in four African countries (Uganda, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe) and has given birth to over 65 social enterprises.

SINA (Social Innovation Academy)

Saath founded in 1989 serves the informal sector through education, livelihood, health, & financial literacy and inclusion.  

Saath is a Public Charitable Trust, founded in 1989, with an aim to support those underserved. Saath in Hindi/Gujarati means ‘together, co-operation, or a collective support. The organization is dedicated to empowering the marginalized communities, by providing livelihood opportunities, access to health care, education, financial literacy and inclusion through varied interventions developed organically in a participatory manner. The goal is to build ownership from within the community to ensure sustainability and impactful transformations, especially for women and children.

**Vision:** Saath envisions inclusive and empowered communities and individuals.

**Mission:** To make human settlements equitable living environments where all residents and vulnerable people have access to health, education, essential infrastructure services and livelihood options, irrespective of their economic and social status.

**Approach:** Saath engages organizations, corporates and individuals from India and globally as partners and supporters. Saath initiated the Integrated Community Development Program, an undertaking that seeks to rejuvenate slums into vibrant neighbourhoods. Saath works with slum residents, children, women, youth, informal sector workers, and vulnerable people in urban and rural areas. It addresses multiple needs of the socio-economically vulnerable with one-stop solutions, through which slum residents have access to basic services for holistic growth.

**Saath’s Thematic areas:**

**Livelihood** - The livelihood programs at Saath focus on making individuals financially independent either by equipping them with vocational training (traditional and non-traditional) or supporting them through entrepreneurial support. Women have been at the core of this initiative. Till date Saath has actively supported **72,809** youth and women for vocational training. Out of which 5200 are successful entrepreneurs. 3,200 women have been trained in non-traditional livelihoods.

**Education** - Saath has supported almost **23,066** children through various educational initiatives.\*\*\*\* The three main strategies tailored to the specific needs of communities are:

**Balghar:** Launched in 2004 as pre-school spaces designed to provide a nurturing educational environment for the holistic development of children. Activities within these spaces concentrate on addressing a child's cognitive, socio-economic, physiological, psychological, and nutritional needs. Serving as demonstration spaces, Balghar complements government-run anganwadis (Pre-schools), catering to the same age group of children. The ultimate goal of the Balghar is to seek admission for the child into a mainstream school, to further her education.  

**Child-Friendly Spaces:** Is a vital initiative aimed at offering a secure environment for child laborers and the offspring of construction workers, addressing their comprehensive developmental requirements. Frequently left unsupervised due to the absence of parental care, these children are at risk of being compelled into child labor. 

**STEM Education:** Is dedicated to enhancing the quality of education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through specially developed Centres, equipped with hands-on learning material, an essential need for children from marginalized communities, particularly girls, who often lack opportunities to pursue these subjects. The STEM experience also presents to them varied career opportunities which they can now seek out and explore. 

**Health –** Health has been an integral part of Saath’s working since its inception, strongly believing that health has an implication on every aspect of a person’s life. Till date Saath has supported **8,22,040** through various interventions, health awareness programs and referral linkages especially focusing on reproductive and child health, vaccination, immunization, Tuberculosis and malnourishment among the vulnerable communities.

**Livelihood:** The livelihood program focusses on making indiviuals financially independent either by equipping them with vocational training (traditional & non-traditional) or supporting them through entreprenurial support. Women have been at the core of this initiative. Till date Saath has actively supported 76,788 youth and women through vocational training. 8,832 have been supported through Microentrepreneurship (ME) interventions. 

**Integrated Area Development (IAD) -** The goal of IAD is bringing together & empowering communities to address issues affecting the quality of their life. The program includes extensive mapping, identification of problem areas and prioritizing them on the basis of severity and urgency. All done in a participatory manner to build ownership from with the community. Committees are then formed and empowered to take these issues to the local government for redressal. 25000 households have been supported through the IAD and more than 500 problems have been resolved. 

**Financial inclusion –** The program aims to build a habit of saving among the community members, no matter how small the amount be. The intervention started in Rajasthan in 2016 spread to Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat as well. Saath has till date supported over **30,000** beneficiaries through various financial inclusion interventions.

Maarifa, a Swahili word for Knowledge, works to defeat poverty and grow local prosperity by promoting locally made products and supporting small scale industry entrepreneurs and artisans in DR Congo. We support them to grow and sustain their small and micro businesses through training in financial management, marketing, packaging, market expansion strategies and give them access to capital.

3.    Connect entrepreneurs in support groups to Microfinance Institutions for small business loans.

5.    Facilitate the creation of Cooperative markets for locally made products.

This way, we help local communities drive their own economic development by creating job opportunities for themselves and others around them, especially the youth. As a result, they build more prosperous and peaceful communities.
