One Girl Can empowers high-potential girls in Kenya to overcome poverty and inequality through education, mentorship, and training

One Girl Can is a registered charitable organization in both Canada and Kenya dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and achieving gender equality through education, mentorship, and training. Founded in 2008 and formally registered as a charity in 2014, One Girl Can has spent over 15 years empowering girls in Kenya to rise above barriers and realize their potential through a holistic model that supports them from high school through university and into meaningful employment.

Our mission is simple but powerful: to equip high-potential, underserved girls with the tools, confidence, and opportunities to achieve financial independence and transform their lives, their families, and their communities. Our vision is for every One Girl Can graduate to earn a meaningful living.

At the heart of our work is our Cycle of Empowerment — a continuum of support that begins when a girl enters secondary school and continues as she becomes an educated, employed, and empowered woman who, in turn, gives back to her community. Through this cycle, our students become role models and mentors for the next generation, creating a ripple effect of opportunity and leadership.

Our model is built on three interconnected pillars:

- We Educate: We identify the most vulnerable, high-potential girls and provide scholarships to access secondary and university education. Education is the first step in transforming a girl’s life and unlocking her potential.
- We Train: Through our Empower Me workshops, university conferences, and entrepreneurship training (co-developed with the Sauder School of Business), we equip girls with the life, leadership, and employability skills needed to succeed beyond the classroom.
- We Mentor: We match graduates with professionals for one-on-one and peer mentorship, helping them navigate their career paths and personal growth. Many of our alumni return to mentor younger girls — completing the Cycle of Empowerment.

Since 2019, One Girl Can has expanded its programmatic work in Kenya to include leadership and life-skills training, mentorship programming, and career development initiatives that bridge the gap between education and employment. In 2025, we launched the Opening Doors Mentorship Program in partnership with the Opening Doors Foundation to help university graduates navigate their transition into the workforce.

Most recently, One Girl Can hosted the inaugural “I LEARN FROM HER” Conference & Gala in Nairobi, gathering over 200 graduates, mentors, and industry professionals for three days of learning, connection, and inspiration. The event marked the beginning of a new chapter in our commitment to build pathways from education to employment for our students and alumni.

Looking ahead, our priorities include:

- Increasing access to high school and university education through our scholarship program
- Scaling the Empower Me workshops to all partner schools across Kenya
- Expanding mentorship opportunities and professional networks through alumni engagement
- Strengthening partnerships with corporate and foundation partners to create internships, apprenticeships, and employment pathways for graduates.
- Strengthen alumni engagement to sustain the Cycle of Empowerment and ensure each generation uplifts the next

Through this enduring cycle, One Girl Can continues to prove that when girls are given the opportunity to learn, train, and lead, they not only change their own lives — they change the world around them.

We aim to advance the mental wellbeing of our South Asian community.

In 2021, during their freshman year of college, our founders Ravi Parekh and Aaron Pandian suffered the loss of their close friend and roommate, Farhan, in a tragic murder-suicide where he took the lives of himself and his family. 

Farhan was struggling with a variety of inadequately treated mental illnesses. However, like so many members of the South Asian-American community, his parents simply lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing him the care he needed.

They recognized that, as an immigrant South Asian family, they lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing Farhan the care he needed. The tragedy of Farhan and his family revealed that there are many mental health issues unique to the cultural characteristics of South Asians. Understanding that these environmental factors and structural barriers to effective care created the situation which led to this tragedy, we theorized a youth-led grass-roots advocacy and education initiative that equips South Asian youth and other interested parties with access to tools and resources to understand, process, and empower.

Grass-roots efforts are often inspired by lived experiences. Our passion and drive to bridge the gaps in mental health care for South Asian individuals stem from our lived experiences.

Knowledge is empowering, and part of understanding mental health is to both learn and express empathy for those affected who are unable to receive effective care. To learn not to fear mental illness as a sibling, parent, friend, significant other, or affected individual and employ newly acquired tools that work to connect with the resources they need. 

MHISA embodies these ideals and provides us an outlet to engage those around us with a shared goal: to enable South Asians struggling with mental illness to lead better and healthful lives.

**Taawon (Welfare Association)** is a **non-profit**, **civic organization** launched in **Geneva** in the year **1983**, upon the initiative of a group of **Palestinian and Arab economists** and intellectuals.
**Taawon has become one of the largest organizations operating in Palestine and the diaspora camps in Lebanon**, whereby it touches the lives of **more than one million Palestinians** on an annual basis, with half of these beneficiaries being **women**.
**Since its establishment, Taawon has invested funds reaching nearly US $900 million, dedicated to development and relief programs.**

Empowering Youth in Cambodia helps disadvantaged urban youth access education, personal growth, and leadership opportunities.

Cambodia's youth demographic is one of the youngest in Southeast Asia, with over 60% of the population under 30. This rapid youth growth presents both a significant opportunity and a considerable challenge for the country’s future development.

**Empowering Youth in Cambodia (EYC)**, founded in 2006, focuses specifically on one of the most vulnerable segments of this youth population—those living in disadvantaged urban communities in Phnom Penh. Most parents of EYC students work in informal sectors as factory workers, waste pickers, tuk-tuk drivers, or street vendors, earning only a modest daily income—typically between $5 and $8. These jobs are unstable and lack job security, often leaving families living on less than $200 per month. Many of these young people are first-generation learners, balancing studies and work often without family support. Additionally, they face limited access to quality education and stable employment opportunities.

**EYC’s mission is to empower these youth through education, personal development, and leadership opportunities—helping them break the cycle of poverty and become active, contributing citizens.** 

Starting small with English and computer classes in Phnom Penh, EYC quickly grew into a respected NGO, reaching over 800 youth annually. Alumni became the organization’s backbone—returning as staff members, volunteers, and role models, creating a powerful youth-to-youth cycle of empowerment. 

Over the years, EYC expanded to multiple community centers, added programs like scholarships, leadership training, life skills, sports, arts, and STEM education. The scholarship program, in particular, has helped many students become the first in their families to graduate from high school and attend university. 

Today, EYC operates three vibrant community centers in Phnom Penh, offering a range of programs:

- **English, digital literacy, and STEM courses,** including coding and robotics
- **Scholarship support** for high school and university students
- **Leadership development** to build communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills
- **Life skills and extracurricular activities** in sports, arts, and mental health initiatives
- **Career guidance** and employability support
- **Volunteer and community engagement opportunities** with local and international partners

EYC’s holistic approach promotes not only academic skills but also confidence, resilience, and leadership. Its partnerships with other NGOs, the private sector, and educational institutions have expanded impact and trust within communities.

Looking ahead, EYC aims to strengthen its curricula, increase digital adoption, expand career pathways, deepen partnerships, and diversify funding to ensure long-term resilience. Its ultimate vision is to be a model for youth empowerment in Cambodia—demonstrating how community-driven initiatives can transform lives, break cycles of poverty, and foster a new generation of leaders.

Our professional team of academics, guides, educators, and community leaders provide meaningful and engaging customized tours of Poland's multicultural landscape, infusing each encounter with illuminating personal stories and insights from those engaged in Polish Jewish life and committed to the preservation of Polish Jewish heritage. TJHTalks Series Having suspended our flagship program, Taube Jewish Heritage Tours, we launched TJHTalks in April 2020 as an interactive way to maintain contact with past and future tour participants and to broaden the Center's audience. Yerusha: Professional Development Program The year-long program, now in its second year, distinguishes itself from other Jewish professional development opportunities in that the operative language is Polish and all workshop facilitators are based in Poland. Resource and Educational Materials The Taube Center has developed a sophisticated set of resource materials in several languages that support our educational programs and are especially valuable for our study tour program. Our publications have been disseminated at the POLIN Museum and the Galicia Jewish Museum and through Polish embassies and cultural institutions around the world.
