**ILUMINA**
**From farm to stage and to the world, Ilumina creates bridges that change the flow of talent around the globe.** 

A diverse community of artists and thinkers with a transformative social mission, Ilumina is writing a new narrative for 21st-century music-making, where worthy talent gets an equal chance to shine, no matter where they come from.

Violist and director **Jennifer Stumm** founded Ilumina on a coffee farm in Brazil in 2015. Its creator-led model unites young artists from diverse origins with global leaders in the field, develops new leaders by opening doors to top quality education, and builds lasting community, all while bringing joy to the world stage. Already, nearly 150 young artists from Ilumina projects have embarked upon performing careers, having attended world-leading conservatories at a 96% acceptance rate. Thousands more benefit from Ilumina’s digital education projects. Artists in the Ilumina community include **Christian Poltera**, **Paul Lewis**, **Liza Ferschtman**, **Tai Murray**, **Anthony Marwood**, **Julian Steckel**, **Boris Brovtsyn**, the **Danish Quartet** and many more, who commit their time to amplify opportunity for young people from very different backgrounds.

Ilumina performances immerse listeners in diverse musical worlds, radically fueled by the freshness of cultural exchange and the power of community, whether in a warehouse, on a farm, or in one of the legendary concert halls of the world. Internationally, Ilumina made a highly lauded **Lucerne Festival debut in 2022**, followed by invitations around the world. In 2024, it became the first Brazilian ensemble to have a **full residency at the Edinburgh International Festival**, made its large hall debut in the **Concertgebouw Amsterdam**, toured in Germany, Austria and Italy and will release its debut album, “Transfigurada,” recorded at the Grafenegg Festival. On September 26, 2024, the prestigious **Kronberg Academy** (Germany) awarded Jennifer Stumm the **Pablo Casals Award - For a Better World** in recognition for her visionary work in cultivating worthy talent from Latin America through Ilumina.

The annual Ilumina Festival every January in São Paulo is firmly established as one of the most significant and innovative music festivals in Latin America, with a majority of its large audience coming from urban and agricultural peripheries and hearing classical music for the first time. Ilumina is a sought-after creator of new festivals, having replicated its innovative model in Austria, Bolivia and Bahia, and, in 2024 it will build its newest musical immersion in the mountains above Bogotá, Colombia.

Since 2019 Jennifer Stumm has regularly spoken at NASA about how thinking like an artist inspires solutions for the world’s grand challenges. Moreover, there has been much interest in Ilumina’s model of efficient musical and social development. During the global pandemic, Ilumina’s digital project, “Equal Music,” united 1,000 musicians around the world to offer private lessons for those who lack access to arts education, leading to multiple full scholarships to universities for its young participants. In 2022 it launched “ECO,” in partnership with the pioneering sustainable coffee farm Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza, connecting music and sustainability and democratizing access in agricultural communities to quality of life in all forms.

**The Philosophy of Ilumina**

The source of Ilumina’s creative energy, where it all began, is a sustainable coffee farm in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest. Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza is a magical place teeming with life, where every organism resonates, from giant trees to tiny hummingbirds. You change one tiny detail, and the entire system evolves, for better or for worse. Just like the farm, Ilumina is an ecosystem. When I founded the project in 2015, first as a grassroots festival project, the dream was to build a new kind of global community of artists and thinkers, driven by social ideals, where people from very different backgrounds inspire and help each other, leaving traditional hierarchies behind and building powerful new creative paths. From the very start, when we were playing a few concerts in a sawmill for farm workers, we could feel something transformative happening between us.

My grandmother, a self-taught pianist with an ear far better than mine, had no chance to study music as a Cherokee person in depression-era Appalachia. The only difference between her story and mine is that I had the chance to be heard. The reality of global inequity is that everywhere in the world there are talented and brilliant people with ideas, creative solutions and unique voices but the vast majority of them are not heard in the halls of power. We at Ilumina believe that talent does not choose where it is born. If we want greater equity and diversity in the world, and the world of music, there must be equity and diversity in the process of creation. That means looking honestly at the intrinsic barriers that keep diverse voices from the mainstream, how systems and traditions can be full of inequities, even with the best of intentions. For example, in classical music it is assumed that a violinist must start playing as a small child to be successful. But a large number of Ilumina musicians start playing in their teens and within a few years are accepted to study at top conservatoires.

Education, sustainability, community, equity, world-class performance and boundary-shifting creativity —these elements of our universe enrich and depend on each other. We don’t prioritize one over the other but view interdependence as proof of a healthy cultural ecosystem. We don’t see concerts on big stages as more important than education and community. A young artist might come to the Ilumina Festival for a couple of years or participate in digital lessons, receive support and a scholarship to study at a great conservatoire, and years later perform on tour as part of our artist collective. Further down the line, they might build their own collective or social project and invest onwards in new communities. Or an established artist might come to our festival or perform on tour with us and make friends with people they never would have otherwise, gaining new perspectives on social and educational inequality, and perhaps ultimately changing the way they view and value audiences. They might start to make different creative decisions, pick up the phone for people who might not have equal access, or notice who is sitting at the tables of power.

On stage, we think diversity is something you should hear. An Ilumina rehearsal might begin with freestyle Brazilian funk dance while improvising on a Baroque bass line but could equally dive so deep into a Ludwig van Beethoven score that we spend an hour working our way into the rhythmic identity of a few bars of music. We use movement and rhythm as connectors, a way to read each other on stage, to stretch our emotional vulnerability and flexibility. Our collective is a rich mix of humans with strong points of view and individual talents, and we lean into the inspiration and friction born from that. We try not to fear looking deeply at hard things. And while for sure there is joy in performing on the world’s big stages, the heart of Ilumina will always be our community. Artists, thinkers, agricultural workers, the amazing people who work on the farm and know every musician by name. Our large urban audience, who fill every seat in the biggest hall in São Paulo no matter how wild and adventurous the program. It’s human connection that powers our creativity.

Ilumina derives from the Portuguese verb ‘iluminar’, meaning ‘to enlighten’. We believe the future is multi-disciplinary and that music is a great illuminator for every other part of life. Music is language, science, emotion, history, and all the complexities of being human. It’s one of the most powerful connectors of both hemispheres of the brain, allowing us to link what we think with how we feel at the same time, to see the world and each other with deeper compassion and clarity. Just like the ecosystem of the forest, music helps us understand why the inclusion of diverse voices is not just a nice ideal but an imperative for the health of the global community. If we believe inclusion is right and true, we should expect better, more challenging and life-changing impact, on stages, in boardrooms and governments, and in ourselves.

Indigenous & non-Indigenous collaboration promoting practice of Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ (Cayuga) language & lifeways in ancestral homelands

The Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ Learning Project is a collaboration of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people working to promote awareness and practice of Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ (Cayuga) language and lifeways in their ancestral homelands and beyond. We hope to carry the idea of sgę́:nǫˀ gó:wah, the Great Peace, into our work, cultivating peace and cooperation through education and community outreach. Our partnership is based on a vision in which Indigenous and non-Indigenous people travel separate but parallel paths to engage in peaceful coexistence. 

The Gayogohó:nǫˀ Learning Project is a fiscally sponsored project of the Center for Transformative Action (CTA). CTA, an educational 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is legally and financially responsible for all our project activities.

**The Problem**

Gayogohó:nǫˀ people were largely displaced from their ancestral homeland (around Cayuga Lake) in the late 1700’s, when George Washington sent a military contingent to destroy crops and villages of the Gayogohó:nǫˀ and other members of the Hodinohsó:nih.  Residents were scattered to Ohio, Canada, and Buffalo Creek, and later to Oklahoma and Six Nations of the Grand River reserve in Canada. Only a few remained in their ancestral lands. 
  
Land fraud by white settlers and the State of New York further exacerbated the separation of the Gayogohó:nǫˀ people from their land, which is an integral part of their language and identity. Many Gayogohó:nǫˀ people were forced into residential schools and Indian Day Schools. Non-indigenous governmental structures hindered the passing-on of traditional culture and language. 
  
Barely 250 years later, the Gayogohó:nǫˀ language is considered critically endangered by the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger.  As of December 2021, there are less than a dozen first-language speakers remaining – one of whom is a member of our group. Most live on the Six Nations reserve in Canada. A few hundred people have learned or are learning Gayogohó:nǫˀ as a second language, but with efforts, such as those of our group, that number continues to grow.
  
The impacts to mental and physical health of separating indigenous peoples from their language, culture, and land are well-documented. Language and culture revitalization efforts provide paths by which to address the health, socio-economic, and ecological impacts of colonization.
 
**Our Approach**

Our project seeks to complement and amplify existing Gayogohó:nǫˀ (Cayuga) language revitalization efforts from within Gayogohó:nǫˀ ancestral lands by supporting educational programs and access to language resources, and increasing opportunities to hear and see the Gayogohó:nǫˀ language in public spaces. Through this work of tangibly teaching and using the Gayogohó:nǫˀ language in the place it developed, and by creating opportunities for dialogue around difficult topics such as colonization, we hope to increase understanding of the history and current status of Gayogohó:nǫˀ people, language, and culture. A key part of our work lies in providing support for Gayogohó:nǫˀ people and others working to revitalize the Gayogohó:nǫˀ language. Through our work, we hope to both explore and spread awareness of ways in which Gayogohó:nǫˀ and other Hodinohsó:nih languages and cultures are connected to the land of the Finger Lakes and explore ways in which all people might cultivate healthy relationships with the land.
 
**Our Team**

**Stephen Henhawk** – Gayogohó:nǫˀ, otahyǫ́:ni: (Wolf clan) Historian and first-language speaker. Stephen grew up in a traditional Gayogohó:nǫˀ household at Ohswé:gęˀ (Six Nations of the Grand River reserve in Canada). Stephen is our language teacher, historian and conveyer of the inspiration behind the Gayogohó:nǫˀ Language Project. The inspiration itself comes from the wisdom and strength of all Gayogohó:nǫˀ people who came before who maintained language and culture and ties to the land against much adversity.
  
**Michelle Seneca**, project leader – Gayogohó:nǫˀ, genyahdę: (Turtle clan). Grew up on the Seneca Cattaraugus reservation in Western New York and lived for a number of years in the Gayogohó:nǫˀ community at the north end of Cayuga Lake. She currently resides in Ithaca. Michelle holds our whole project together.
  
**Jim Wikel,** advisory board member - Jim Wikel ni gya:soh (I am called). From Onǫdowáˀga:ˀ Gayogo̲hó:nǫˀ neh:ni Gahnawiyóˀgeh (Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma). Currently resides in Salem, OR. Began learning the language in 2015 in Oklahoma. Worked in the behavioral health/addiction field since 2008. Worked with Native clients, encouraged them to learn their own languages. Recovery means getting back something you thought was lost. Ogwa:węh means "It belongs to us." I am reclaiming what belongs to us. 
  
**Noah Mark**, advisory board member – has been a student of Gayogo̱hó:nǫʼ nigawęnó:dę’ since June, 2021. The mission of the Gayogo̱hó:nǫʼ Learning Project resonates with him as someone who was born and raised on traditionally held Hodihnohso:nih lands and as a descendent of Japanese immigrants who underwent intergenerational loss of language and culture. His past work experience includes grassroots organizing and fundraising on environmental issues and sexual assault prevention, vegetable farming, and research on emerging contaminants. Currently, he serves as technical director of a citizen science-based nonprofit called the Community Science Institute. 
  
**Josephine Martell**, advisory board member –  has lived on Gayogohó:nǫˀ lands for the past ten years and is of French, Scottish, and German heritage. Josephine is a social scientist who studies how message framing and language affects decision making and behavior, and leads the Office of Research Development at Cornell University in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She has over 20 years of experience in policy, research, advocacy, and grant writing. Josephine is a passionate mother of three children and an avid trail runner.
  
**Karen Melamed Smith**, advisory board member – has lived on Gayogohó:nǫˀ land for forty years. With a background in music, philosophy and education, she served as the education director of the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) from 1998-2018 and continues to teach piano and to perform with Music’s Recreation. Of Eastern European Jewish heritage, she has always wondered about the interrelationships of heredity, culture and place and feels honored to learn and support the language that is rooted here.

**Our Impact**
Accelerator Media launched its flagship podcasts, Ignition Sequence and Go! For Launch, to immediate success, garnering over 670,000 YouTube views and 1,500 subscribers in just the first ten weeks, demonstrating significant public interest. This rapid growth, driven entirely by volunteer efforts, validates the demand for content that explores profound questions and career paths in science, technology, and culture, and signals our potential for even greater impact as we expand.

**Primary Platforms**
Currently, Accelerator Media distributes content primarily through YouTube and leading podcast platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts. Our ambitious growth strategy includes future collaborations and distribution through major platforms such as PBS, Netflix, or Amazon Prime, especially for our documentary-focused project, Curiosity Entangled.

**The Need for Support**
At Accelerator Media, **we believe that knowledge drives the future**—shaping the ideas, innovations, and collective vision that will define humanity’s path forward. To produce this transformative content at scale, we need the financial resources to grow our team, enhance production quality, and expand our reach.

To date, all of our work has been accomplished by a dedicated volunteer team operating with minimal funding. This early momentum is a testament to the strength of our mission and the public demand for thoughtful, future-focused media. Now, to meet that demand and ensure long-term impact, we must transition from a volunteer-led effort to a fully supported organization with the capacity to grow.

With a fundraising goal of $1.5M, we aim to:

Accelerator Media

The Civic Circle empowers students students to understand and participate in democracy through music and the arts.

The Civic Circle launched in 2018 to empower low-income students with civic skills, lift youth voices through the arts, and close a well-documented equity gap in civic learning and engagement.

Since then, we’ve reached more than 5,000 underserved students with our after-school workshops, assembly shows and community civic events. The heart of our program is seven civic skills we call “steps to democracy”— Listen, Learn, Choose, Join, Speak, Act and Lead. In other words, be a compassionate, informed, engaged citizen.

Civic learning correlates to better school performance, and college and career readiness. Students in our programs do Social Studies and service-learning activities, and work with teaching artists to create and perform their own civic songs, poems, and art pieces. Along the way they build literacy, confidence, self-expression, and social and emotional skills.

Our innovative, multicultural program equips students with the civic skills they will need to become voters and leaders in their communities, a mission that is increasingly crucial both for student achievement, and for our success as a democratic society. National Public Radio

We provide education and support to young defectors and foster their integration into South Korean society. 

Yeomyung School is a government approved alternative school to provide education and support young NK defectors in their integration into South Korean society. Students include those in middle school and high school and range in age from 16 to 25 years old. Courses offered prepare students for the next level of their education. These courses include: science, math, social studies, English, etc. The Ministry of Unification is responsible for oversight of Yeomyung School.

We aim to advance the mental wellbeing of our South Asian community.

In 2021, during their freshman year of college, our founders Ravi Parekh and Aaron Pandian suffered the loss of their close friend and roommate, Farhan, in a tragic murder-suicide where he took the lives of himself and his family. 

Farhan was struggling with a variety of inadequately treated mental illnesses. However, like so many members of the South Asian-American community, his parents simply lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing him the care he needed.

They recognized that, as an immigrant South Asian family, they lacked the tools, resources, and education necessary for providing Farhan the care he needed. The tragedy of Farhan and his family revealed that there are many mental health issues unique to the cultural characteristics of South Asians. Understanding that these environmental factors and structural barriers to effective care created the situation which led to this tragedy, we theorized a youth-led grass-roots advocacy and education initiative that equips South Asian youth and other interested parties with access to tools and resources to understand, process, and empower.

Grass-roots efforts are often inspired by lived experiences. Our passion and drive to bridge the gaps in mental health care for South Asian individuals stem from our lived experiences.

Knowledge is empowering, and part of understanding mental health is to both learn and express empathy for those affected who are unable to receive effective care. To learn not to fear mental illness as a sibling, parent, friend, significant other, or affected individual and employ newly acquired tools that work to connect with the resources they need. 

MHISA embodies these ideals and provides us an outlet to engage those around us with a shared goal: to enable South Asians struggling with mental illness to lead better and healthful lives.

When News Decoder began in 2015, our founding belief was that young people could transcend the role of passive information consumers to become powerful knowledge producers and agents of change ready to meet these challenges. 

Over the past decade, we have demonstrated not only that this vision is possible but how it can be achieved. Our combination of journalism skills training and cross-border virtual exchange empowers young people to be informed, engaged citizens capable of reporting on their local communities and sharing their perspectives on a global stage.
