Providing NYC Public Schools with Training and Resources to Start and Sustain Student Journalism Programs and Publications

Press Pass NYC equips under-resourced NYC public schools with free faculty training, student resources and program support to launch or revive a student news publication – and keep it running. Our goal is to level the playing field in a city where a 2022 Baruch College study found 93 of the 100 highest poverty high schools had no student newspaper. Working on a news team gives teens the opportunity to develop their curiosity and passion by writing about topics that interest them, developing critical thinking, teamwork and leadership along with media literacy.

Since 2021, we’ve helped 30 NYC public schools start or revive a student news publication, online or in print, with 14 more coming in the 2025-26 school year. Every donation goes toward supporting these budding news teams through fellowships for teachers and students.

For example:

- $250 funds a stipend for a Student Journalism Leader
- $500 funds an hands-on journalism workshop for students
- $1000 funds a Journalism Adviser Fellow's first year stipend 
- $2000 funds one year of journalism supplies and resources for a student news team                                              
- $25,000 fully funds three-years of program support for a school news team to ensure sustainability.

We look deeply to understand the harms caused by systemic racism and white supremacy, patriarchy, materialism, capitalism and its resulting inequalities, ecological devastation, militarism and the war economy, and religious nationalism. Through informed action and engagement, we work towards personal, social, and ecological healing and transformation, actively contributing to the betterment of our world. 
6. **Offering Radical Welcome:** Our community is inclusive and welcoming to all peoples. We are especially attentive to the needs of younger adults and youth and orient our community with future generations in mind. **About Adam Bucko and Kaira Jewel Lingo**

Father Adam Bucko, an Episcopal priest, and Rev. Kaira Jewel Lingo, a Buddhist Dharma teacher in the Plum Village Zen and Vipassana lineages, were appointed as directors and board members of Our Lady of the Resurrection Monastery, Inc., a religious nonprofit organization. In this capacity, they became guardians of the monastery and its mission. They seek to revitalize and develop the 22-acre site to continue its original mission of contemplation and renewed forms of monastic living while also establishing it as a Christian-Buddhist Retreat and Training Center. **The History of Our Lady of the Resurrection Monastery**

Our Lady of the Resurrection is nestled on a secluded hilltop in Dutchess County. The monastery was founded by Victor-Antoine d’Avila-Latourrette, a French monk who lived there as a hermit monk for more than 40 years. His daily life was rooted in and dictated by the natural rhythms of the earth as he followed the monastic Rule of St. Benedict and listened to God "with the ear of the heart" while tending the gardens, growing food, feeding the animals, offering spiritual guidance to visitors, and sanctifying his days with the prayers of the liturgy of the hours.

One media outlet said of Brother Victor in 2001, "He has a terminal case of serenity, and he wants to pass it on" to those who come to the monastery for prayer and guidance. "To live fully in the present," Brother Victor said, "we must be aware that reality is physical and spiritual, immediate and eternal, all at the same time." "People imagine monks praying, chanting, and reading," he said, "not scrubbing floors and milking cows. They are often astonished to discover that for us, prayer and work are the same thing."

Brother Victor suffered a debilitating stroke in the summer of 2014 and died February 28, 2023, at the age of 83. We are grateful to have him as our spiritual ancestor now.

The **Design Science Studio** (DSS) is a cultural and educational incubator that supports creators in shaping futures rooted in regeneration, justice and belonging. The Transformative Justice Center provides services to the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated. 

Our mission is to advocate for transformative justice, emphasizing empathy and understanding as we work with those who have been incarcerated. At the Transformative Justice Center, and our flagship prison program - Empathy in Action, we see past the person’s history and focus on their potential. By providing crucial support and resources, we aspire to drastically reduce recidivism and help individuals reclaim their lives. At its core, transformative justice works to transform relationships, institutions and systems historically founded in oppression, marginalization, and violence into ones grounded in restoration, respect, and responsibility.

We know that most if not all people in prison come from painful, traumatic backgrounds, from victims to victimizers. The **Promise of Justice Initiative** (PJI) is a New Orleans-based decarceration organization that stands at the forefront of the fight for the dignity, freedom, and autonomy of those targeted and touched by the criminal legal system and mass incarceration.

Because racism and mass incarceration are entrenched and pervasive, PJI’s approach is multifaceted, including collective action, legislative advocacy, civil and criminal litigation, and reframing narrative discourse. PJI:

PJI is a different kind of civil rights organization; we don’t follow any national agenda or framework. As empathy flourishes, divisions diminish, polarization lessens, consensus emerges, nations come together, and the world becomes more peaceful. The educational programming for this three-day public celebration of children's talents is rooted in STEAMS education, an innovative approach developed by ICAF that integrates Arts and Sports into the STEM disciplines. AfDIF is developed to enable high impact social entrepreneurs and changemakers by providing early-stage catalytic funding.

**Primary Beneficiaries**
The initial pipeline will be selected from ADN's flagship programs. However, our longterm goal is to  broaden the pipeline to select visionary African social entrepreneurs within Myriad USA networks as well**.**

African Diaspora Innovation Fund

The Rivanna Area Queer Center provides a safe refuge for all LGBTQIA+ people 
in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties.

LGBTQIA+ people need spaces of our own where we can take refuge, build resilient communities, and organize for our collective liberation. RAQC provides a safe and loving home for the queer community in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties. Programming at RAQC addresses multiple areas of need: support groups, peer counseling, and on-site mental health professionals contribute to the emotional wellbeing of our community. Classes and workshops on topics as diverse as screen printing, foraging, and self defense address our physical and creative needs. Social events like mixers, parties, and performances ensure that our region’s vibrant queer culture continues to flourish. In addition to our own programming, RAQC also serves as a safe and accessible space where all local queer organizations and individuals can host their own events.

We aim to empower underserved communities to rebuild stronger, more resilient health systems. Our mission is to accelerate recovery, reduce vulnerabilities, and enhance access to care, ultimately driving systemic change and ensuring long-term community health resilience.

ARHC is dedicated to serving communities in the aftermath of a crisis. Our core mission involves a comprehensive approach to recovery, focusing on strengthening access to healthcare services, accelerating the overall recovery process, and providing sustained guidance to communities long after the initial emergency support has diminished. We understand that true recovery extends beyond immediate relief, encompassing the long-term rebuilding of infrastructure, social support systems, and the overall well-being of the affected population. DemocracyReady NY is a nonpartisan, multigenerational coalition strengthening democracy by preparing all students for civic life.

The DemocracyReady NY Coalition is the premier statewide force for civic education, with a stellar national reputation, a strong and committed roster of members, and an impressive track record of accomplishments. DemocracyReady NY's mission is to

- **Raise awareness** about every student’s right under the state constitution to an education that prepares them for civic participation.
- **Strengthen investment**, **policy, and practice** to help students develop the knowledge and skills they need to engage effectively in civic and political life, today and in the future​. 
- **Eliminate inequities** in access to quality P-12 civic learning opportunities.
- **Mobilize** youth, families, educators, researchers, advocates, policymakers, and philanthropy to work collectively toward these goals.

When News Decoder began in 2015, our founding belief was that young people could transcend the role of passive information consumers to become powerful knowledge producers and agents of change ready to meet these challenges.

News Decoder is a nonprofit registered in France. Our vision is a world where every young person participates in shaping a better tomorrow for themselves, their community and the wider world. Through past and present partnerships with nearly 50 schools in 20 countries on five continents, we teach and model the tools and techniques of journalism that help young people better understand complex international issues, hone their voices and viewpoints and turn their ideas in to meaningful social action.

The Civic Circle empowers students students to understand and participate in democracy through music and the arts.

The Civic Circle launched in 2018 to empower low-income students with civic skills, lift youth voices through the arts, and close a well-documented equity gap in civic learning and engagement.

Since then, we’ve reached more than 5,000 underserved students with our after-school workshops, assembly shows and community civic events. The heart of our program is seven civic skills we call “steps to democracy”— Listen, Learn, Choose, Join, Speak, Act and Lead. In other words, be a compassionate, informed, engaged citizen.

Civic learning correlates to better school performance, and college and career readiness. Students in our programs do Social Studies and service-learning activities, and work with teaching artists to create and perform their own civic songs, poems, and art pieces. Along the way they build literacy, confidence, self-expression, and social and emotional skills.

Our innovative, multicultural program equips students with the civic skills they will need to become voters and leaders in their communities, a mission that is increasingly crucial both for student achievement, and for our success as a democratic society. Verified Voting’s mission is to strengthen democracy for all voters by promoting the responsible use of technology in elections. We are a non-partisan organization focused exclusively on the critical role technology plays in election administration. Our staff, Board, and Board of Advisors consist of nationally-recognized subject matter experts on the issue of election integrity and the responsible use of technology. Since our founding in 2004 by computer scientists, we have acted on the belief that the integrity and strength of our democracy rely on citizens’ trust that each vote is counted as cast. In the ever-shifting world of election security, where new threats or challenges can emerge at any time, we are working to guide elections toward greater accuracy, security, and verifiability.

Verified Voting

Uses technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy.

The largest nonprofit, non-partisan voting registration and get out the vote (GOTV) technology platform in America. It has registered more than 3.3 million new voters, verified 8.2 million voters’ registration status, and has helped over 30 million website users by providing registration links and deadlines, polling location details, and other essential voting information for each state. Vote.org also leverages its SMS-based GOTV program each year, targeting low-propensity voters in regularly scheduled and special elections.

To turn out the vote among young people and people of color, Vote.org partners with corporations and other organizations in the civic space, including Gannett Media Group's USA Today, Vote Save America, and The Andrew Goodman Foundation. Vote.org has also launched exciting new partnerships in 2020 with The Webby Awards, NAACP Youth Coalition, GLSEN, wikiHow, and Young Entertainment Activists. Many of their corporate partners have signed on to Vote.org's Election Day campaign, launched in 2018, which commits them to giving their employees paid time off to vote on Election Day. To date, 500 companies have signed the pledge.

Vote.org was originally founded as Long Distance Voter (LDV), which served as a comprehensive online resource for absentee ballot information. LDV had 500,000 viewers within six months of its 2008 launch, and in 2014, it was the official source of data for Google's "How to Vote" project, which received over 30 million views.

In 2016, LDV rebranded itself as Vote.org, with funding and support from the Y Combinator. That fall, Vote.org ran its first-in-nation SMS peer-to-peer voter registration drive, and on Election Day 2016, Vote.org ran the single largest non-partisan SMS GOTV drive in America, providing polling location information to over 1 million low-propensity voters.

With the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic in America, Vote.org recently added a page to its website, offering regularly updated, state-by-state information for voters whose primaries have been postponed or otherwise delayed. As the pandemic creates new barriers to safe and fair elections, Vote.org is working to keep voters engaged in the democratic process and prevent misinformation from dissuading them from participating in the 2020 election.

Vote.org's mission is to use technology to simplify political engagement, increase voter turnout, and strengthen American democracy. With its new leadership team, led by CEO Andrea Hailey, Vote.org is on track to serve 12 times the number of people it served in 2018. The organization plans to turn out more than 5 million low-propensity voters in this fall's presidential election.
