I was blessed to attend two retreats with Dharma Gates and my life is transforming as a result of this beautiful community. 

It is exactly what I had when I was a student at Pomona College, a liberal arts school in California, asking the big questions of life. It is exactly what I wish was there, upon graduating, not sure what path to take in life, but trying to follow my values. And it is exactly what I needed upon the deaths of loved ones, when the weight and stubbornness of my reactions to grief, made living happily seem impossible.

Dana Vihara exists to support the activities of Beth Upton’s American sangha. Our sangha holds that the dhamma is priceless, of incomparable and unquantifiable value. We have had the great fortune to receive these teachings freely. Out of gratitude to all the sangha who have preserved these teachings and given them freely through the generations as well as a deep commitment to the dhamma, we are working to build a resilient and sustainable dana culture to support dana-based retreats in the Americas. We exist to receive and house donations offered freely by those who share our resolve to make deep meditation practice accessible to our sangha. Donations are used to secure lodging, food, and other necessary conditions for meditation retreats in the Americas. In this way, we seek to offer the gift of dhamma to all those with the volition to practice, irrespective of financial contribution, so that students can honor the teachings in the proper way - through sincere practice. In the past ten years we have helped hundreds of people to find greater serenity in their lives through meditation practice.

A surprisingly large part of our impact has been among seniors, who have benefited from our gentle techniques.

Many have found our services to be supportive of longterm recovery from addiction.

Our mission is to serve the medical and wisdom traditions of Asia; an offering to the lineages that have inspired us and countless others over the millennia. As a registered nonprofit organization in California, we have active projects in Nepal and India. 

We work with the [Sowa Rigpa International College](https://sorigcollege.org), the first accredited college program teaching the science of Tibetan & Himalayan medicine in Nepal. There, we are developing educational and research programs, and helping with fundraising efforts to support the college and sponsor students. 

In addition, our team translates and researches texts from Tibetan and Sanskrit languages on traditional medicine and spiritual practices.
