Ella Baker Center has long been doing the work of fighting the cycle of poverty and incarceration - especially at the interface of youth and prisons. They implement community programs to empower those most hurt by the criminal justice system, they police the police, they campaign for divestment from prisons, and they demand financial accountability from the Alameda Sheriff's Dept. They offer many modes of additional engagement, e.g. podcasts, educational events, book talks, and more, at an impressively high frequency. I'm new to following Ella Baker Center, and I'm inspired by the excellence, commitment, and reach, of this organization.

CPE has a lot of deep, data driven research and policy papers available on their site. They are already working with a number of police departments like Seattle, San Jose, and Minneapolis. 

Women of Color Unite fights for fair access, fair treatment & fair pay for WOC in the entertainment industry. 

Women of Color Unite (WOCU) is a social action non-profit organization focusing on fair access, fair treatment and fair pay for women of color in all aspects of the entertainment and media industries.  This organization works towards these goals by creating self-sustaining long-term programs for:  Facilitating fair hiring practices; Fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace environment; Promoting access for excluded content creators; Expanding audiences represented by those excluded content creators; Raise funds for WOCU to produce their own content; Hold events, seminars, workshops, panels and summits to get more women of color hired, fund their projects and distribute their content; Work with additional organizations to develop analytics of under-represented marginalized groups to better identify their needs; and, Help companies incubate talent and integrate them into their work force.

Hoop For All is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that uses sports to create health awareness and financially aid patients during treatment.

Our five health focuses are cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health, and HIV/aids. We create awareness by executing sporting events that provide resources on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Our events also serve as a platform to financially aid affected patients during the treatment and recovery process. EBC builds power with systems-impacted people to drive systems-change. Over its 27-year history, the families and communities EBC organizes with have collectively transformed the criminal justice system in California, from closing  abusive youth prisons to passing first-of-its-kind legislation to challenge racial discrimination in trials and sentencing. Building on the organizing approach of civil rights leader Ella Baker, EBC invests in the leadership of the people most impacted by racial oppression. EBC is led by systems-impacted people and implements solutions created from lived expertise. Recent California victories like the Racial Justice Act for All, the RISE Act, and the Access to Programming Act were pioneered at EBC and are poised to bring thousands home to their families. EBC also invests in leadership in its core base. For example, currently incarcerated people are most impacted – but least included – in policies for decarceration. Through EBC’s 9,000+ inside member network, currently incarcerated people weigh in on policy solutions, organize with their peers, speak out on issues impacting their lives, and get support to advocate for their freedom. Locally, in the Bay Area, EBC builds credible alternatives to prisons. Restore Oakland, EBC’s community center, models investments that return opportunity to over-criminalized neighborhoods. Here, EBC and partners offer resources like restorative justice circles, re-entry support, tenants rights tools, job training, and entrepreneurship funding that build a vibrant, prosperous community. Organizing for safety, power, freedom, and opportunity, EBC advances the self-determination of the people most impacted by the criminal justice system.

The **Promise of Justice Initiative** (PJI) is a New Orleans-based decarceration organization that stands at the forefront of the fight for the dignity, freedom, and autonomy of those targeted and touched by the criminal legal system and mass incarceration.

Because racism and mass incarceration are entrenched and pervasive, PJI’s approach is multifaceted, including collective action, legislative advocacy, civil and criminal litigation, and reframing narrative discourse. PJI:

- Challenges the notion that prisons keep us safe and that people with convictions do not deserve basic rights.
- Fights for freedom for people sentenced to die in prison.

PJI is a different kind of civil rights organization; we don’t follow any national agenda or framework. We confront issues and take on cases that, very often, no other organization will venture to challenge. Our work requires **deep investments of time, energy, creativity, and collaboration** with partner organizations, legal and community stakeholders, and those most directly impacted by the criminal legal system. Our work **blurs the traditional lines of litigation and advocacy** as we develop and execute novel legal and engagement strategies to attack seemingly intractable problems.

At LPTM, Black and Brown boys express themselves; navigate life challenges; mentor their peers; and transform their communities.

Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM) provides opportunities for Black and Brown boys and young men ages 3-25 to express themselves; navigate the challenges in their lives; teach and uplift others as mentors; and contribute positively to their communities. 

Boys enter the program as early as age three, with programming including a daily afterschool arts and education mentoring program from 3:00-7:00, which involves transportation and a meal, a college- and career-prep Saturday Academy for high school young men who also serve as mentors, a full-day six-week summer program, and family and community engagement. All programs are free for all youth and families. 

In all programs, LPTM provides an environment of love, security, and expression. Black boys and young men, from pre-school to grad-school and beyond, discover their authentic selves; awaken to a sense of purpose; have their brilliance and humanity valued and nurtured – and see themselves as the beautiful Masterpieces they are. In their artwork, advocacy, and model of mentorship, our Black boys and young men are protagonists of positive change.

We will automate and expand eligibility for record clearance across the country, impacting millions of people.

The Clean Slate Initiative works to expand and automate the sealing of arrest and conviction records after people have completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time - believing everyone should have a shot at redemption.   

We are a national, bipartisan non-profit organization that builds advocacy campaigns where local, state, and national partners operate with the shared goal of passing Clean Slate laws in states and in Congress.

Through partnerships, collaboration, and coordinated advocacy campaigns, the Clean Slate Initiative unites businesses, advocates, community members, and impacted people across the country.

We support state-based campaigns with the goal of passing laws that ensure conviction and non-conviction records are automatically sealed once someone has completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time. 

The Clean Slate Initiative supports campaigns that have clear goals, well-thought-out strategies, and a vision for building a base of support that can defend and sustain policy wins.

Since this initiative’s inception, we have helped pass legislation that provides a path for: 

- 2.3 million people to have at least one conviction or non-conviction cleared;

- 7.3 million conviction and non-conviction cases to be cleared; and

- 2 million people to receive full record clearance.

You may wonder - why is there a need for Clean Slate Initiatives? Here are the facts: 

1 in 3 adults in the United States have an arrest or conviction record that limits their ability to work, obtain housing, and engage in civic life. Having a record, even an arrest record, is a significant barrier to economic mobility. 

- 9 in 10 employers use background checks when hiring.

- 4 in 5 landlords use background checks on prospective tenants.

- 3 in 5 colleges and universities use background checks on prospective students.

There are more than 44,000 collateral consequences that limit the ability of people with a record to access meaningful opportunities to build a better life. Our work focuses on automating the process to remove those barriers, providing a real second chance for the millions who are currently impacted by an arrest or conviction record.
