An international women’s fund mobilizing resources for Black women-led organizations in Latin America to address sexual violence.

What is VidaAfrolatina?

VidaAfrolatina is an emerging international women’s fund that mobilizes resources and connects them with Black and Afro-descendant women-led organizations in Latin America that address sexual violence. Selected through a participatory process, these organizations provide culturally relevant healing experiences in their communities and launch initiatives to reduce and, ultimately, eliminate sexual violence. We proudly amplify the vision, wisdom, power and leadership of our grantee partners.

Without investment in Black women’s solutions for their own communities, the structural, intersectional issues that perpetuate sexual violence will continue on largely unabated and ignored. VidaAfrolatina strives to fill a void in resources to strengthen and expand the work of Black and Afro-descendant women’s organizations.

VidaAfrolatina creates a world where Black women and girls are free to flourish because safety and wellness are their everyday reality. We do this by connecting diverse resources, including philanthropic funding and capacity support, with Black women’s groups in Latin America, with a specific focus on organizations that provide healing services for sexual violence survivors and that create and lead systemic change to end sexual violence.

Ranked Choice Voting Maryland is a non-partisan coalition seeking to build a more effective, representative democracy.

**Why is Ranked Choice Voting Great for Maryland?**

In ranked choice voting elections, the candidate who reflects the views of the widest number of voters wins. Even in crowded fields, similar candidates can compete without splitting votes. Whether Republican, Democrat, independent or third-party, voters never have to worry about the “spoiler effect.”

We rank things all the time and express our preferences when we are shopping, going out to eat, etc. **Elections do not reflect how we make choices everyday.**

Our mission is to inspire and empower youth to take control of their academic success through peer tutoring and mentoring.

Peer Power Foundation is a youth development organization that seeks to close equity gaps that exist within the public education system. Since 2004, we have created opportunities for Memphis students to grow into productive adults who contribute to the city and nation in accordance with their passion. 

Peer Power recruits, hires, trains and deploys college-aged students into high school classrooms to decrease the student to teacher ratio and meet the individualized needs of students. We also hire and train 11th and 12th grade students to tutor students in lower grades, helping to close literacy gaps during crucial academic development stages. In addition, Peer Power partners with external organizations to train tutors within for their programming needs. 

In 2015, Peer Power Foundation created the “Memphis Model” in partnership with Memphis- Shelby County Schools (MSCS) and University of Memphis. The program employs more than 150 University of Memphis tutors called “Success Coaches” who are trained and placed within high school classrooms. This unique configuration reduces the student-to-adult ratio from about 30-to-1 down to roughly 10-to-1. Success Coaches are paid, earn college credit, gain professional experience and help MSCS students, while classroom teachers experience higher job satisfaction and retention.

TUTOR + MENTOR = SUCCESS COACH
Success Coaches are trained in subject content knowledge as well as social emotional learning. They are equipped to hone in on the holistic needs of scholars. 

Students with a Success Coach in their class are 3X more likely to show up for school.

Students who participate in ACT Prep University are 1.9X more likely to improve their score.

Students who participate in ACT Prep University are 1.5X more likely to obtain an academic scholarship. 

Students who participate in Peer Power’s ACT Prep University see their composite scores increase by 3.4 points on average and have earned and qualified for more than $3 Million in TN Hope Lottery Scholarships.

We also hire and train 11th and 12th grade students to tutor students in lower grades, helping to close literacy gaps during crucial academic development stages.

More than tutoring. Peer Power specializes in developing creative programs that link school aged students with college students who serve as mentors, tutors and role models for them. Our flexible peer-to-peer model allows us to meet needs and serve students in unorthodox but proven ways.

Founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer and bestselling author of Just Mercy, EJI is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons. We challenge the death penalty and excessive punishment and we provide re-entry assistance to formerly incarcerated people.

EJI works with communities that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment. We are committed to changing the narrative about race in America. EJI produces groundbreaking reports, an award-winning wall calendar, and short films that explore our nation’s history of racial injustice, and we recently launched an ambitious national effort to create new spaces, markers, and memorials that address the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation, which shapes many issues today.

EJI provides research and recommendations to assist advocates and policymakers in the critically important work of criminal justice reform.
