Ella Baker Center has long been doing the work of fighting the cycle of poverty and incarceration - especially at the interface of youth and prisons. They implement community programs to empower those most hurt by the criminal justice system, they police the police, they campaign for divestment from prisons, and they demand financial accountability from the Alameda Sheriff's Dept. They offer many modes of additional engagement, e.g. podcasts, educational events, book talks, and more, at an impressively high frequency. I'm new to following Ella Baker Center, and I'm inspired by the excellence, commitment, and reach, of this organization.

CPE has a lot of deep, data driven research and policy papers available on their site. They are already working with a number of police departments like Seattle, San Jose, and Minneapolis. 

I decided to become a monthly donor to EJI because they never give up on truth, justice, and freedom. 

EJI is doing extraordinary work in criminal justice reform to make the US more equal and just, and creating museums/memorials to confront/recognize the nation's history and ongoing problem with racism. #blacklivesmatter

We build centralized learning and internet centers in frontiner regions where people have almost no access to education or technology. Each center includes an English curriculum, books, tablets, Starlink internet, and a local coordinator. 

Khan Academy had digital distribution for middle class kids all over the world. libraryCreate will have physical distribution in education and remote work for the extremely impoverished around the world.

Once people are digitally trained, these learning centers will act as global nodes that companies can use for offshore, cheap work. This way, a libraryCreate center doubles as both a school and a place to work. This FDI then goes back into the community and helps stabilize economies and build metros.

Honor the Elders recognizes Iya Tahirah Abubakr as an exemplary Elder and Wisdomkeeper and is pleased to be raising funds to provide a gift in recognition of her lifelong service to her community. We believe that when we provide needed support to Elders and wisdomkeepers, the whole community benefits. 

Through the Grandmother Project and Honor the Elders, we provide services and gifts to exemplary Elders and wisdomkeepers whose work is aligned with the purpose of Nourishing Futures, who have lived a life of service to their communities, and whose life circumstances require financial resources to help cover the basic costs of food, shelter, health care, and medicine. All funds raised will be re-gifted to Iya Tahirah Abubakr, in honor of her life of service.

**Who is Iya Tahirah?**

Iya Tahirah AbuBakr, born River Lee Adams, was raised in Pocahontas, Mississippi as the eldest of seven children in a family of sharecroppers who turned hardship into strength and purpose. At seventeen, she left Mississippi for New Orleans, and in her early twenties moved to New York City, where her community activism within the Black Liberation Movement laid the foundation for a lifelong path of service as a social worker and community leader.

Her spiritual journey led to initiation into **Ifa** by **Ifa Priestess Yemọja**, grounding her in the ancestral Yoruba traditions of West Africa. A graduate of Social and Cultural Anthropology from IU Indianapolis, and trained in shamanism with **Malidoma Somé**, she emerged as Iya Tahirah AbuBakr—medicine woman, diviner, shamanic practitioner, and founder and co-founder of the St. Croix Council of Elders.

Iya Tahirah has dedicated her life to the service of humanity, with a deep commitment to nurturing youth and leaving the Earth better than she found it. Supporting Iya Tahirah ensures her wisdom, resilience, and sacred legacy continue to uplift future generations.

 **What is going on with her health?**

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Iya Tahirah was found alone in her home and rushed to the hospital, having suffered physical injury from a fall that was a result of an [ischemic stroke.](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/24208-ischemic-stroke-clots) 

At first, the prognosis was dark (she only had days to live). We believe now that this was a combination of her condition (we estimate 36 hours between the stroke and when she was found), and the doctor’s inability to see beyond the facts (age, race) and into the truth. Iya Tahirah has shown that she is cogent, lucid, and generally aware of what is going on. She has begun the long walk to recovery and she needs our support, now.

Hoop For All is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that uses sports to create health awareness and financially aid patients during treatment.

Our five health focuses are cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health, and HIV/aids. We create awareness by executing sporting events that provide resources on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Our events also serve as a platform to financially aid affected patients during the treatment and recovery process. EBC builds power with systems-impacted people to drive systems-change. Over its 27-year history, the families and communities EBC organizes with have collectively transformed the criminal justice system in California, from closing  abusive youth prisons to passing first-of-its-kind legislation to challenge racial discrimination in trials and sentencing. Building on the organizing approach of civil rights leader Ella Baker, EBC invests in the leadership of the people most impacted by racial oppression. EBC is led by systems-impacted people and implements solutions created from lived expertise. Recent California victories like the Racial Justice Act for All, the RISE Act, and the Access to Programming Act were pioneered at EBC and are poised to bring thousands home to their families. EBC also invests in leadership in its core base. For example, currently incarcerated people are most impacted – but least included – in policies for decarceration. Through EBC’s 9,000+ inside member network, currently incarcerated people weigh in on policy solutions, organize with their peers, speak out on issues impacting their lives, and get support to advocate for their freedom. Locally, in the Bay Area, EBC builds credible alternatives to prisons. Restore Oakland, EBC’s community center, models investments that return opportunity to over-criminalized neighborhoods. We know that the brave women and girls working at the grassroots level have the solutions. We know that when women become agents of change, they benefit, their families benefit, their communities benefit. Since its inception in 2007, FFC has funded more than 386 projects throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo. At LPTM, Black and Brown boys express themselves; navigate life challenges; mentor their peers; and transform their communities.

Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM) provides opportunities for Black and Brown boys and young men ages 3-25 to express themselves; navigate the challenges in their lives; teach and uplift others as mentors; and contribute positively to their communities. 

Boys enter the program as early as age three, with programming including a daily afterschool arts and education mentoring program from 3:00-7:00, which involves transportation and a meal, a college- and career-prep Saturday Academy for high school young men who also serve as mentors, a full-day six-week summer program, and family and community engagement. All programs are free for all youth and families. 

In all programs, LPTM provides an environment of love, security, and expression. Black boys and young men, from pre-school to grad-school and beyond, discover their authentic selves; awaken to a sense of purpose; have their brilliance and humanity valued and nurtured – and see themselves as the beautiful Masterpieces they are. In their artwork, advocacy, and model of mentorship, our Black boys and young men are protagonists of positive change.

Faces Up Uganda (Faces Up) is a youth-led, community-based not-for-profit that serves young people (6-25 years), in and out of school, refugees, juveniles, and those with disabilities. Our current focus areas include Wakiso and Kampala districts, plus Nakivaale refugee settlement, in Isingiro district.

We serve young people like Mark. In 2019, Mark joined our program. His initial drawings were dark scenes of violence, death, and despair. We later learned he was a refugee from South Sudan, carrying trauma he couldn’t express in words. So we gave him what he needed: space, pencils, and presence. Over time, his drawings transformed from guns to flowers, from fire to birds in flight. His smile returned, his confidence grew, and his performance at school improved. Mark’s journey showed us that art is more than expression; it’s healing. 

That’s why our team is on a mission to extend arts education to all young people like Mark.

We will automate and expand eligibility for record clearance across the country, impacting millions of people.

The Clean Slate Initiative works to expand and automate the sealing of arrest and conviction records after people have completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time - believing everyone should have a shot at redemption.   

We are a national, bipartisan non-profit organization that builds advocacy campaigns where local, state, and national partners operate with the shared goal of passing Clean Slate laws in states and in Congress.

Through partnerships, collaboration, and coordinated advocacy campaigns, the Clean Slate Initiative unites businesses, advocates, community members, and impacted people across the country.

We support state-based campaigns with the goal of passing laws that ensure conviction and non-conviction records are automatically sealed once someone has completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time. 

The Clean Slate Initiative supports campaigns that have clear goals, well-thought-out strategies, and a vision for building a base of support that can defend and sustain policy wins.

Since this initiative’s inception, we have helped pass legislation that provides a path for: 

- 2.3 million people to have at least one conviction or non-conviction cleared;

- 7.3 million conviction and non-conviction cases to be cleared; and

- 2 million people to receive full record clearance.

You may wonder - why is there a need for Clean Slate Initiatives? Here are the facts: 

1 in 3 adults in the United States have an arrest or conviction record that limits their ability to work, obtain housing, and engage in civic life. Having a record, even an arrest record, is a significant barrier to economic mobility. 

- 9 in 10 employers use background checks when hiring.

- 4 in 5 landlords use background checks on prospective tenants.

- 3 in 5 colleges and universities use background checks on prospective students.

There are more than 44,000 collateral consequences that limit the ability of people with a record to access meaningful opportunities to build a better life. Our work focuses on automating the process to remove those barriers, providing a real second chance for the millions who are currently impacted by an arrest or conviction record.
