We guide the shrimp farming industry towards higher welfare practices for a more sustainable and ethical future.

Shrimp Welfare Project is the first organization to focus exclusively on improving farmed shrimp welfare. Their efforts include corporate and producer outreach and raising awareness about the welfare of farmed shrimps. The organization collaborates with stakeholders across the supply chain, including retailers and medium-to-large shrimp producers, to improve welfare standards. 

Shrimp Welfare Project also runs the Sustainable Shrimp Farmers of India, which takes a farmer-centric approach to improving welfare standards on farms in the country. 

Shrimp Welfare Project conducts and disseminates relevant research and participates in effective altruism, animal welfare, and shrimp farming industry conferences to increase the visibility of shrimp welfare as a neglected and tractable issue.

Working on improving the lives of farmed fish, a neglected problem with enormous scale, in the Philippines and Vietnam

Around **4,000 fish are killed in industrial farms every second** and 73-180 billion fish are being farmed at any given time. There’s an [abundence of evidence](https://www.canva.com/link?target=https%3A%2F%2Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Farticles%2FPMC9100576%2F&design=DAGj7Qj3OhY&utl=h29e626b61a&accessRole=owner&linkSource=document) that fish are sentient and experience pain, meaning that farmed fish are suffering at an unfathomable scale, particularly in Asia which farms 90% of the world’s farmed fish. This is [twice the number of fish](https://https://animalcharityevaluators.org/charity-reviews/causes-we-consider/#farmed-animals) as there are land-based farmed animals worldwide. 

Despite this enormous scale of suffering, **farmed fish welfare receives virtually no attention or resources**—especially in Asia where conditions are often severe and regulations minimal.

**Scale Welfare is working to find solutions that actually work.** We're conducting rigorous field studies in the Philippines and Vietnam to test multiple intervention approaches and identify the most scalable and cost-effective ways to improve farmed fish welfare.

Scale Welfare was **incubated through Ambitious Impact's Charity Incubation Program**, which helped us develop our evidence-based approach to this neglected cause area.

Our research will determine which interventions- whether farmer training, improved systems, or policy changes—can create the greatest impact. **Once we identify what works, we'll pilot and scale these solutions** to improve conditions for millions, potentially billions, of farmed fish.

We've already started engaging policymakers on wild animal-friendly urban infrastructure (e.g. bird-safe glass). In 2026, we plan to work on additional policy areas like fertility control and pesticide policy.

- It's tractable. Wild animal welfare science is beginning to identify ways we can help
- Policy is the right approach because government decisions impact countless wild animals, and governments have the capacity and authority to make large-scale changes

- Secured two amendments to the UK's Planning and Infrastructure Bill mandating systemic consideration of wild animal welfare during construction and conservation
- Secured sympathetic discussion of wild animal welfare in UK Parliament

- Continue our work on urban infrastructure
- Start work on fertility control (e.g. research funding, expedited regulatory approval)
- Start work on pesticide policy (e.g. bans on the worst rodenticides, research funding for humane insecticides)
- Agenda-setting (e.g. publish a State of Wild Animal Welfare Policy report)

We've selected policy areas that look realistic, robust and helpful. We'll work by engaging policymakers, politicians, the media, and NGOs; and by publishing policy reports. For now, we're focused on the UK, but we want to see wild animal welfare policy succeed globally.

International nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food.

The Humane League (THL) is a global animal protection nonprofit that exists to end the abuse of animals raised for food. Through corporate negotiations, grassroots activism, and policy work, they drive meaningful change across the food industry that reduces the suffering of billions of farmed animals. Their evidence-based approach and dedication to institutional and individual change have made them one of the most effective animal protection organizations worldwide.

**Corporate Impact** The Humane League's corporate negotiations and pressure campaigns have transformed the food industry's treatment of animals. Alongside their partner organizations, THL has fought for—and secured—over [3,000 commitments](https://thehumaneleague.org/article/owa-3000-commitments?utm_medium=blog&ms=c_blog) from companies to spare chickens from abuse. This includes over [2,600](https://chickenwatch.org/progress-tracker/) cage-free welfare commitments and over [625](https://chickenwatch.org/progress-tracker/) broiler welfare commitments by restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets, drugstores, and other foodservice and hospitality businesses. Of these cage-free commitments with a deadline of 2024 or earlier, [92%](https://openwingalliance.org/2025-cage-free-fulfillment-report) have been successfully fulfilled. And, in the US, THL’s work has helped increase cage-free production since 2015. As of 2025, over 45% of the US egg-laying flock is cage-free vs. only 5% when THL started conducting cage-free campaigns in 2015. That 40% difference accounts for an estimated 120 million egg-laying hens per year in the US who will never face life in a cage.

**Global Movement Building** The Humane League founded and leads the [Open Wing Alliance](https://www.openwingalliance.org) (OWA), a global coalition of 90+ animal protection organizations across six continents. The power of the OWA is changing the way the world’s biggest companies treat animals and setting a new standard for corporate animal welfare policies locally—in every major market—and globally. 

**Policy & Legislative Change** Through the [Animal Policy Alliance](https://animalpolicyalliance.org/) (APA), The Humane League works to enact meaningful change for animals through legislation and policy. The APA organizes and empowers an alliance of 30+ local and state-level animal advocacy groups across the US to create relationships with legislators and advocate for policies that benefit animals.

**Evidence-Based Approach** The Humane League grounds all work in research and evidence to maximize effectiveness. Their strategic focus on institutional change creates scalable improvements for the largest number of animals possible, while building momentum for continued progress. The Effective Altruism Animal Welfare Fund aims to effectively improve the well-being of nonhuman animals, by making grants that focus on one or more of the following:

The Animal Welfare Fund has historically supported many different interventions, including advocacy in neglected countries, research that improves our understanding of relevant issues, and campaigns that push large corporations to improve their farm animal welfare policies. In recent payouts, the Fund has made a number of small startup grants to emerging organizations, as well as grants to more established players in the space.

Supporting research to improve the focus and efficacy of animal advocacy
In addition to funding direct work on animal welfare, the Fund also supports research that improves our understanding of how to most effectively help animals. This research has focused on better understanding the well-being of wild animals, which species are most promising to focus on, and  which interventions are the most effective at reducing animal suffering.

Supporting campaigns to reform corporate policies
Tens of billions of animals suffer as a result of their use in food production. By tackling this issue at the level of commercial supply chains, corporate campaigns can be high-leverage opportunities to improve the lives of tens of billions of animals. The Fund has granted to a range of organizations with relatively strong track records of securing commitments from large food companies; these organizations include Compassion in World Farming USA and Sinergia Animal.

Supporting research on and advocacy for alternative proteins
Finding culinary alternatives to meat is an important step toward reducing the suffering of animals raised for food. While commercial alternative protein companies are generally able to raise private funding, other organizations that build support for alternative proteins (like academic groups and grassroots organizations) are relatively underfunded. The Fund has granted to organizations around the world, including in the UK (CellAG), Israel (The Modern Agriculture Foundation), and globally (Cellular Agriculture Society).

Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary is a non-profit horse rescue located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
**The mission of Southern Sun Farm Horse Rescue is to provide a safe, secure place for abandoned, abused, neglected or unwanted equines.**
We rescue horses of all types from abuse, abandonment and neglect, and work to find them loving forever homes.

Ann and John Lisk have over 50 years combined experience working in Animal Welfare. A lawyer by training, John took over the helm as Director of the Miami-Dade Humane Society and turned it around operationally with improved facilities, fundraising, community outreach as well as a newly donated building. While there John began the first ever Safe Families-Safe Pets Program. He found that crisis centers would not allow pets to stay with them. Through this program, women/families in abusive situations could leave their family pets safely at the Humane Society while they found better living arrangements. While serving on the Board of Directors for the Humane Society, Ann Lisk worked with two regional Horse Rescues. Whether administratively or operationally, there are not many scenarios that they have not experienced. That experience translated into Southern Sun Farm Sanctuary.

Angels for Animals (officially registered as Alpha Angels Animal Trust) is a women-led, grassroots nonprofit organization based in rural Goa, India, working to rescue, sterilize, heal, protect and rehabilitate injured, abandoned, and vulnerable street animals.

Alpha Angels Animal Trust

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is a volunteer-based, non-government organization whose goal is to prevent animal cruelty through education, animal sheltering and advocacy, based in Quezon City, Philippines.

PAWS also runs an animal shelter for over 300 cats and dogs rescued from cruelty or neglect. There, animals are rehabilitated in the hope of finding them new homes and a second chance at a good life.

**Where Dog Meets Companion**...Doggie Harmony is a dedicated non-profit rescue group focused on matching the right people to the right dogs in Atlanta—and beyond. Available dogs are found by Good Samaritans, face a 'death row' sentence at animal control, or are with owners who seek to relinquish. Secondary to our dog placement objective, we sponsor spay/neuter, wellness, training, and boarding to keep or place dogs in happy homes.

**Fueled Entirely By Volunteers...**We are 100% volunteer-run and reliant on community members to house animals until we can find a new home for each pet. Nearly 100% of your donation goes to the care animals, with a small percentage going to administrative/technology fees.

conservation organizations.  Founded in 1973, we are a non-profit organization with an expanding footprint
throughout southern and East Africa, focusing
on conserving threatened species and ecosystems to the benefit of people. We achieve this by conducting on-the-ground research, supporting community-led conservation, training and building capacity, addressing human-wildlife conflict, monitoring threatened species, and establishing safe spaces for wildlife range expansion.

SPECIES RECOVERY
The EWT has achieved remarkable gains for many species, where downward trends in the local populations of Wattled and Grey Crowned Cranes, Piggersgill’s Frogs, the Amathole Toad, and the Riverine Rabbit have joined the Cheetah as species on a pathway to recovery. Critically Endangered
Wattled Cranes are increasing in number, now estimated at some 320 birds nationally, up 60% from their lowest numbers. The EWT has also helped reverse the decline of Endangered Grey Crowned Cranes, while Blue Crane numbers have increased from an estimated 25,500 birds nationally in 2007 to some 30,000 birds today.
SPACE FOR SPECIES
Through our range expansion work, we have secured and protected safe spaces for multiple species to thrive and we have reintroduced many threatened species back into secure and suitable landscapes. Safe space for African Wild Dogs has increased to over 1.4 million ha throughout southern Africa and their numbers and generic health have followed suit. Safe space for Cheetahs and their numbers have also increased from 217 Cheetahs on 41 reserves in South Africa in 2011, to 470 Cheetahs on 65 reserves covering over two million hectares across southern Africa.

SAFEGUARDING OUR SPECIES
To protect threatened species, we monitor them and work with partners, businesses, landowners, and communities to reduce the threats they face. We are innovating to achieve bigger impacts, as evident in our drone project’s expansion to use drones to mark power lines - reducing bird strikes safely and affordably and monitor Southern Right Whales in a way that wasn’t possible before. We continue to explore the use of eDNA to identify the presence of elusive and potentially extinct species, such as
Van Zyl’s and De Winton’s Golden Moles, so that action can be taken to save the last of their habitats.

Our pioneering Eye in the Sky carcass and wildlife poisoning detection project has already saved thousands of animals from secondary poisoning as a result of its efficient and effective success and our quick response times. The project uses the movements and behavior patterns of GPS-tracked vultures to remotely detect potential poisoning events and respond to these rapidly, alerting rangers on the ground and preventing further loss of wildlife to poisoning. We also contribute to preventing wildlife crime through the deployment of Conservation K9s to detect wildlife contraband and track poachers. These dogs help us to protect species, including rhinos, elephants, and pangolins.

Protec􀆟ng and conserving natural places is one of the most important strategies for comba􀆫ng the effects of
biodiversity loss and climate change. The EWT conserves habitats by reducing habitat loss and improving the
ecological integrity of threatened ecosystems through rehabilita􀆟on, restora􀆟on, and sustainable land
management. Many of the EWT’s programmes are involved in habitat conservation, but two are dedicated to protecting specific habitats.

COLLABORATING FOR CONSERVATION
An effective vehicle for conserving habitats is the formal protection of land through Biodiversity Stewardship. We work with private and community landowners to legally declare their land as protected or help them to manage it sustainably and without damage to sensitive species and ecosystems.
The EWT was instrumental in the development of Biodiversity Stewardship, having facilitated the workshops which led to its establishment, and subsequently, the EWT has declared 185 properties (over 139,000 ha) as protected areas in the last
ten years and is currently in the process of securing a further 130,000 hectares for threatened species conservation across South Africa. This includes proper􀆟es in one of the region’s most important centres of endemism: the Soutpansberg Mountain Range. Easily recognized for our work to safeguard charisma􀆟c species like the Wild Dog and Cheetah, the EWT also played a key role in preventing the extinction of the Brenton Blue Butterfly by establishing a dedicated reserve for this endemic insect.  Other critical habitats have been protected to prevent the extinction of many smaller, lesser-known species, including rep􀆟les, amphibians, butterflies, golden moles, and threatened plants.

CARBON FOR CONSERVATION
After establishing the feasibility of carbon trading in South Africa’s grasslands and recognizing the potential benefits for farmers and grassland and wetland management, the EWT the EWT initiated the first carbon offsetting contracts with private landowners in South Africa, in the Drakensberg.
When landowners agree to conserve and manage their land to allow for the verifiable sequestration of carbon in the soil, the carbon can be converted into carbon credits. Liable ensures, usually big carbon emitters, can purchase up to 10% of their carbon as carbon credits to reduce their tax liability in South Africa. These purchases create a long-term revenue stream for farmers and conservation organizations to support conservation efforts and protect important habitats through improved land-use management.

People need nature to survive – it provides important resources we depend on. We must live in harmony
with nature to thrive in healthy ecosystems that will support us and future genera􀆟ons, our wildlife, and
maintain our rich natural and cultural heritage. Through two of its programmes, the EWT implements
innovative strategies that incorporate the needs of people and the environment to ensure that people
benefit from the more sustainable use of natural resources.
BENEFITTING PEOPLE
CAPACITY FOR CONSERVATION
Working across diverse landscapes such as wetlands,
grasslands, river catchments, savannahs, and mountains, the EWT has embraced the need to support the lives and livelihoods of thousands of people who depend on their local environment, from developing sustainable livelihoods as alternatives to environmentally destructive practices in communities from KwaZulu-Natal to Limpopo, Zambia, and as far as Uganda, to pioneering the implementation of Population, Health and Environment in communities in southern and East Africa to support sustainable communities and empower women. The EWT
promotes and implements the education of school
learners and builds capacity for conservation and
ecotourism in communities across our project areas.

BIODIVERSITY AND BUSINESS
Recognizing the importance of biodiversity to business, the EWT established the National Biodiversity and Business Network (NBBN) in 2013 to work with innovative businesses to identify and manage the risks and opportunities resulting from their interactions with the natural world. Through its Biodiversity Disclosure Project, the NBBN helps companies to understand, measure, and disclose their biodiversity impacts and policies. The NBBN introduced the world’s first standardized accounting
framework, the Biological Diversity Protocol (BDP), which measures a business’ impact on biodiversity and identifies areas of improvement over time.  The EWT’s targeted conservation work has national and global impacts and our achievements contribute to multiple conservation-related frameworks. These include South Africa’s 2nd National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2015–2025), and the National Biodiversity Assessment which assess the status of, and identify the biodiversity and ecosystem
management priori􀆟es as well as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. 

Arguably, the EWT’s most important global impact is our work toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed by the United Nations. The SDGs are a universal set of goals, targets, and indicators that UN member states should use to frame their agendas and political policies. Ambitious by nature, they are a government-led endeavor that serves to coordinate actions by United Nations agencies, businesses, non-governmental groups, and any other entities working on specific goals. These are
the goals that the EWT contributes to.



Endangered Wildlife Trust

CETI is a nonprofit org applying advanced machine learning and gentle robotics to listen to and translate whale communication. 

Founded in 2020 as a TED Audacious Project, the organization’s science team is made up of the world's leading artificial intelligence and natural language processing experts, marine biologists, cryptographers, linguists, roboticists and underwater acousticians. CETI’s research is taking place off of the island of Dominica in the Caribbean.

In the late 1960s, scientists, including Dr. Roger Payne, a principal advisor of CETI, discovered that whales sing to one another. His recordings, Songs of the Humpback Whale, sparked the “Save the Whales” movement, one of the most successful conservation initiatives in history. The campaign eventually led to the Marine Mammal Protection Act that marked the end of large-scale whaling and saved several whale populations from extinction. 

All this by just hearing the sounds of whales. Imagine what would happen if we could understand them?

WHY WHALES 
Sperm whales specifically share traits strikingly similar to humans. They live in matriarchal and multicultural societies and share dialects and strong multigenerational family bonds. Sperm whales have the largest brains of any species and have higher-level functions such as conscious thought and future planning, as well as speech and feelings of compassion, love, suffering and intuition. Their vocalizations, among the loudest animal sounds on the planet, have a Morse code-like structure that shares the hallmarks of a highly-evolved language. Our understanding of these animals and their dialects is still in its infancy. Only in the last fifteen years have we begun to learn how some of their vocalizations are used for communication.  
WHAT CETI IS DOING
CETI is:
-Developing non-invasive robotics to listen to a population of whales in the Caribbean and put their sounds into context.
-Deploying a “Core Whale Listening System,” an innovative hydrophone array, underwater robotic gliders, custom bioinspired whale tags and other technology to gently study the whales.
-Building on substantial data on the whales’ sounds, social lives, and behavior already obtained by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project. 
-Creating a bespoke, big-data pipeline to examine the recorded data and decode it using advanced machine learning, natural language processing and data science.
-Publishing a series of academic papers beginning with the CETI roadmap.
-Collaborating with the National Geographic Society, including their Exploration Technology Lab, and amplifying the project across National Geographic’s storytelling and education channels.
-Implementing community-based programs like the Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship, a community-based 10-month multi- module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science, that was developed in partnership with National Geographic.
-Launching various communications projects to tell CETI’s story including a public interface for the citizen science community, resources for educators and children and arts programs.

IMPACT
Now, for the first time in history, it’s possible to use artificial intelligence to identify and interpret deep structure within animal communication. Using these technologies, CETI is building on the legacy of the “Save the Whales” movement with the goal of having an impact by contributing the following:
Interspecies Communication - A new data set of unprecedented size to the rapidly expanding field of interspecies communication and a roadmap of how humans could translate the communication of any other species
Marine Biology - A substantive contribution to the field of whale research within marine biology that opens gateways for future research initiatives. 
Policy - New information about whales that can bolster policy efforts to protect marine mammals and ocean habitats. Policy advances in this area are crucial as six out of the 13 “great” whale species (the largest whales) are still endangered (World Wildlife Federation). To ensure impact in this area, CETI plans to build out policy campaigns and initiatives. 
Perspective - It is widely endorsed that connectivity with nature can improve mental health. By sharing its journey and findings with the public, CETI hopes to contribute to a feeling of increased wonder and connectedness to whales and the ocean that can inspire action. CETI will build out arts and childrens’ initiatives in support of this impact goal.
Conservation - CETI’s first phase of research is taking place in Dominica in the Caribbean, a region that is one of the world’s greatest centers of diversity. By carrying out its research in partnership with local stakeholders, CETI hopes to contribute to regionally-led research and conservation efforts.

HOW CETI IS SUPPORTING DOMINICA
-CETI’s capacity-building initiative, Dominica Marine Conservation Fellowship is a 10-month, nine module training program for young Dominicans interested in marine science) in partnership with National Geographic.  The program has three 2022/2023 fellows and partnerships with the Dominica National Youth Council, Dominica State College and Dominica’s Ministry of Education. The program’s curriculum (co-created with National Geographic) includes modules on marine science, scientific research/techniques, water and vessel skills and storytelling and leadership among other topics.
-All research and findings by CETI in Dominica are all open-source and will be available for Dominica. The organization’s sailing research vessel (CETI-1), a Rigid Inflatable Boat (CETI-2) and Dominican made boat (CETI-3) are in operation in Dominican waters; these boats along with other CETI equipment will be donated to the local entity at the completion of the project.
-A temporary field station has been established in Dominica and has the capacity to host 10-12 researchers, fellows and students. In the long-term, CETI plans to build a permanent field station in Dominica 
-In 2023, CETI will continue local engagement and presentations with primary and secondary schools, development of video content for use in classrooms, collaborations with local artists and collaborations with local stakeholders such as marine and dive operators, civil society organizations and schools.

Lil BUB’s Big Fund exists to advocate for special needs companion animals and build a community that celebrates and fosters the human-animal bond. With a focus on animals that are the most difficult to adopt, the most expensive to care for, and are at a high risk of euthanasia. 

Lil BUB’s Big Fund provides access to care for special needs pets nationwide. We work with community leaders, shelters, and rescues nationwide to create special needs focused frameworks. We visit schools to promote kindness and inclusion. Through our work, we share BUB’s message of overcoming adversity and the knowledge that the things that make us different are worthy of being seen and appreciated.

Lil BUB's Big Fund

We empower animal advocates with research, analysis & strategies that maximize their effectiveness to reduce animal suffering.

We conduct essential research, maintain an online research library, and directly support advocates and organizations in their work to save lives. The range of data we offer helps our movement understand how people think about and respond to advocacy, providing advocates with the best strategies to inspire change for animals.

Our Original Studies are carefully selected, designed, and conducted to provide actionable and insightful data for the animal protection movement. Our research prioritization process helps us identify studies that have a high potential impact for animals, and our commitment to transparency and rigorous methodology ensures that our studies are of the highest quality. Our studies have been covered in hundreds of publications across animal advocacy circles as well as in mainstream media, and have been used by animal advocacy groups worldwide.
