Cuba is currently experiencing a critical political, economic, and social moment. Any initiative that promotes the sustainable use and management of biodiversity, and particularly of a fauna species that could be an alternative food source for local communities and an important source of income for the inhabitants of the communities that coexist with that species, is often an impossible mission unless the communities that live with that species can earn more from supporting conservation efforts than from hunting it (including sustainable hunting). Furthermore, alongside conservation efforts, projects must consider initiatives that also generate diverse alternative protein sources to address one of the most pressing issues affecting their communities. This also includes the management of sustainable tourism at the local level and the promotion of this species by both the state and private sectors.

I chose to donate to Hive because it genuinely feels like home - a place where we all support each other’s growth.

🍲 Gaza Soup Kitchen: Feeding 10,000 People Daily

As famine tightens its grip and markets collapse, Gaza Soup Kitchen is still boiling pots—feeding 1,000 people every day with dignity and determination.

We were the first soup kitchen in North Gaza to lean on local farmers and forage from nature to keep people alive. When others paused, we adapted. When supplies ran out, we improvised.

Today, we operate across 11 kitchens, run a community clinic, and deliver clean water and hot meals to hospitals—even in the hardest-hit zones.

This is survival work, done by people living through the very crisis they’re responding to.

Caritas Manila is the social service and development ministry of the Archdiocese of Manila.

Caritas Manila is one of the largest church-based nonprofit organizations in the Philippines. It is a Spirit-led community committed to serving the poor—the “least, last, and lost” in society.

Its programs are geared towards total human development, poverty alleviation, and the creation of a Christian community with a strong social conscience.

**Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP)**

Caritas Manila believes that *education* is the *best social equalizer.*

YSLEP is Caritas Manila's flagship program. It forms future leaders from the poor by *providing scholarships and formation sessions* to around 5,000 youths nationwide.

**Caritas Damayan**

Damayan is the umbrella program of Caritas Manila that covers: (1) preventive health, (2) plant-based food security, (3) feeding and nutrition, (4) crisis intervention, and (5) disaster relief and rehabilitation.

Its sub-programs are:

1. **All is Well** - Through the help of its partners in the medical field, Caritas Manila *offers health services in 28 clinics* in Mega Manila.
2. **Gen129** -*\* This program advocates lifestyle change through plant-based living. In this program, we teach the poor \*how to grow their own food* for a more sustainable future.
3. **Munting Pag-asa** -*\* This program aims to \*counter malnutrition* by providing healthy supplemental meals to poor malnourished children for 120 days.
4. **Unang Yakap** -This program provides healthy meals and vitamins to *poor pregnant/lactating mothers* for 120 days to ensure the optimum health of the mother and their child. Beneficiaries also receive seminars on financial literacy to improve their living condition.
5. **Caritas in Action** - In cooperation with Radio Veritas 846, the CIA program provides medical, legal, hospital bill, laboratory, psychosocial, and burial assistance.
6. **Cadamay** - It *provides emergency relief response* within 24 to 72 hours by distributing food packs, hygiene kits, bedding materials, and shelter repair kits. It also provides livelihood assistance to victims of calamities and church reconstruction assistance to affected parishes.

**Restorative Justice**

It is a program designed to *help Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs)* heal their relationships with their families and the community. It also aims to help them be reintegrated into society as self-sufficient individuals.

**Sanlakbay**

Sanlakbay para sa Pagbabago ng Buhay is a parish/community-based rehabilitation program that aims to transform lives, restore human dignity, and *reintegrate* d*rug dependents* into their communities.

**Segunda Mana**

It is the donated goods program of Caritas Manila that *converts in-kind donations into cash* in our 47 charity outlets in Mega Manila to:

- Fund over 5000 tech-voc and college YSLEP scholars
- Support the livelihood of over 300 micro-entrepreneurs and their families from informal sectors like BASECO and Payatas
- Strongly promote the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle)

**Institute for Servant Leadership and Stewardship (ISLaS)**

ISLaS is the *volunteer arm of Caritas Manila* which mobilizes around 5,000 volunteers within the Archdiocese of Manila.

Parish-based leaders and volunteers undergo continuous training and values formation that mold them to become committed servant leaders. These volunteers enable us to efficiently and effectively implement various social services and development programs for poor families in their communities.

Provides access to fresh produce from local farms and nutrition education to food-insecure people living in and around Ithaca, NY.

**Food & Health Equity** 

Since 2006, Healthy Food For All (HFFA) has been making fresh, quality produce accessible to low-income households and promoting the viability of local farms through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

HFFA provides sustenance and stability for over **1,500 youth and adults** struggling with hunger while fairly compensating local farmers producing the diversity of fruits and vegetables that provide a cornerstone to good health. 

**Farm Viability** 

By investing over **$200,000** annually in local organic farms, HFFA is helping to keep small diversified farms in business, in-turn increasing our community's capacity to sustainably grow healthy food for everyone. The whole community benefits from local abundance, farm resiliency and food security. And, as our farms grow more, they share more—in 2021, HFFA farms provided over 150,000 pounds of fresh fruits and veggies at half price for low-income community members, and donated an additional 30,000 pounds valued at over $55,000 for neighbors in need.

**Environmental Sustainability**

HFFA’s farms use organic, biodynamic and regenerative practices. These techniques support soil health, protect and improve water quality, help draw down greenhouse gases and restore ecosystems while nurturing fertility and fortifying the harvest—even as pests and extreme weather conditions intensify. HFFA farms are working on our behalf to **combat climate change,** **feed our community and heal our planet.**

Anabel’s Grocery provides nutritious, affordable food for all Cornell students through a student-run grocery store and educational programs that create a fun and empowering community around quality food, food choices, wellness and positive social change. Our store is located right on Cornell’s campus, eliminating the need for transportation and greatly reducing the time required to shop. Because of our subsidy fund, we are able to buy fresh and nutritions food, much of it from local vendors, at low cost to our shoppers. On average, we save our shoppers 20% on their grocery bill. We are also the only venue on campus accepting SNAP EBT.  Anabel’s helps students stretch their food budgets and prioritizes a healthy diet by focusing on fresh produce, whole grains, legumes, nuts, herbs and spices.

**The problem**

Food on campus is expensive, and the Cornell campus lacks a full-scale grocery store. For many students, a lack of time, transportation, money, or knowledge prevents them from accessing nutritionally adequate food. In a 2019 survey of Cornell undergraduate students, 17% reported having to skip meals frequently due to financial constraints. For Hispanic students this number jumped to  28.2%  and for Black students to 34%. 
  
The same survey showed that a lack of transportation and a lack of time to shop and prepare food are also significant barriers to eating well for Cornell students. Thirty percent of students said that they frequently did not eat as much as they needed because of a lack of transportation to an area grocery store. This number rose to almost 38% for Black students and 35% for Hispanic students. 
  
Twenty-nine percent of students surveyed said they frequently ate less than the needed because of the lack of time to shop for food and almost 37% said they were frequently hindered by a lack of time to prepare food. These numbers are significantly higher for Black and Hispanic students: 41% of Black students and 35% of Hispanic students responded that they ate less than they wanted to because they lacked time to shop at area grocery stores: 48% of Black students and 44% of Hispanic students surveyed said they ate less then they want to because of lack of time to prepare food.
 
**Our approach**

Our approach to addressing the problems of food insecurity and the associated stigma is to operate a student run grocery store on campus with low-cost, nutritious food for all Cornell students.  Yet, Anabel’s is far more than a grocery store 
  
We hope to increase nutritional literacy and cooking skills through easy to make, nutritious and inexpensive recipes, and programming events such as cooking classes, community dinners, and guest lecturers. To make cooking more accessible, we have established a pot and pan rental system, since access to adequate kitchenware is a barrier for many students. We also collaborate with like-minded student organizations to tackle the systemic forces that give rise to food insecurity, and racial inequities in the campus food system. For example, we have established an Anti-racism Action Fund, from the sale of produce donated to us by the Dilmun Hill student farm and the Cornell Hydroponics Club. This fund supports anti-racist student actions on campus and is distributed by Cornell4BlackLives. 
  
By design, Anabel’s has a somewhat unorthodox organizational structure, one that is lateral rather than hierarchical. We don’t have supervisors,  managers or directors.  Anyone can take the initiative to make decisions and effect change. In fact, we want everyone to have agency in decision-making and taking action because Anabel’s then benefits from the good ideas, passion, interests, and skills that each and every one of you bring to the organization. That said, we do have structure, policies and defined roles that are consistent from semester to semester. And although everyone has agency to make decisions, our organization isn’t completely flat. Those with more experience naturally take on roles with more responsibility.  We have four committees (Org Strategy, Operations & HR; Purchasing, Sales & Product Promotion; Collaboration & Education) that meet weekly and are facilitated by a committee coordinator. These committees largely govern themselves, determining their goals for the semester and who will take which roles. While committee roles are defined, they can change depending on the talents and interests of members and the evolving needs of the organization. The committee coordinators meet weekly to ensure effective communication and coordination between committees.
 
**Our Team**

Our team is made up of about 40 students from across years, majors, and colleges. All members of our team are currently or have taken AEM 3385, a social entrepreneurship practicum focused on Anabel’s Grocery. Everyone in this course is helping to run Anabel’s. After taking the course, some students continue with Anabel’s to coordinate one of our committees and staff the store.

NAFSN is a professional association of people working to strengthen their local & regional food systems.

The [North American Food Systems Network](https://foodsystemsnetwork.org) (NAFSN) works at the forefront of the food systems profession itself, providing networking opportunities, resources, career guidance, leadership opportunities, training, webinars, podcasts, and a comprehensive jobs board for people at all levels of this critical-change work. 

NAFSN also convenes subject matter experts to develop training and open-access tools specifically for community-based food systems professionals.

NAFSN's mission stems from our collective knowledge that the world’s dominant food structures have undermined the well being of Earth and all its inhabitants, including humans. Urgent issues related to food and agriculture that reduce the resilience of communities include:

- the ubiquity of diet-related human diseases
- farmer economic insecurity, aging-out, mental health concerns
- unjust and unsafe working conditions of farm workers
- farmland loss
- inability for new and historically marginalized farmers to access farmland & resources
- degradation of soil, water, air
- confined, disease-prone livestock
- disparities in rural communities
- lack of local infrastructure supporting food processing and distribution
- poor access to healthful foods in many communities
- disregard for traditional knowledge of regenerative practices
- climate change threatening food production
- industrial food production contributing to climate change
- multi-cultural foodways lost and replaced with cheap, highly-processed products sold as food

Effective solutions to these issues will address the interrelated challenges across both food and nutrition security and climate change and work towards transforming national and global food systems. This work will include strategies to promote local and regional food systems, which have been shown to reduce food waste, support local economics, increase the biodiversity, freshness, and nutritional value of foods, and reduce food insecurity. 

NAFSN knows that this workforce requires unique skills, science-based knowledge, and trust-based networks. We offer learning and networking opportunities for practitioners at all career points (emerging, transitional, seasoned) to help this workforce become better known, valued, and engaged in driving meaningful change. We lean toward newcomers, and value lived experiences and activism as cornerstones of this profession.

We are action-oriented and seek to have an impact through quality and community-driven tree-planting projects throughout **North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific**.

One Tree Planted engages and impacts populations all over the world. In just nine years, we have gotten over **100 million trees** in the ground through new and established relationships with over 463 planting partners. In 2022 alone, we planted over 52 million trees within 327 planting projects in 74 countries across six regions and have potentially sequestered more than 10 million tons of carbon over the next 20 years. Through these projects, we helped to:

- create 2,438 jobs, 
- support 50,582 farming families, 
- engage over 32,000 volunteers, and 
- restore 97,769 hectares of land. 

One Tree Planted has impacted populations at all levels. On a macro level, One Tree Planted has helped to reduce the adverse effects of carbon emissions, air pollution, and global warming. It has inspired and engaged individuals, schools, foundations, and businesses to take action to combat climate change. It has restored landscapes for economic, social, and environmental well-being. On a micro level, it has supported community development by building and beautifying urban green spaces and improving air and water quality. It has helped underdeveloped communities become resilient and self-sufficient, develop sustainable economies, and provide income, food, and heating to support families. Its action and positive storytelling have inspired many and boosted the sense of community all around the world.
