The School of Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA) is an Afghan-led private boarding school for girls, the first of its kind in the nation, currently enrolling students in grades 6-9 who hail from 25 of Afghanistan's 34 provinces.

30 Birds is rebuilding pathways for Afghan girls to learn, lead, and live freely.

After the fall of Kabul, 30 Birds partnered with student leaders from Marefat High School, one of Afghanistan’s first coed schools, to evacuate the school’s most at-risk girls and their community. These girls were targeted because of their public support for democracy and human rights. Determined to continue their education, the girls played an active role in coordinating their own escape. Under duress, moving in small numbers from city to city and past Taliban checkpoints, we helped more than 450 Afghans - schoolgirls, family members and various activists for female education -  safely across the border and onwards to Canada, the United States, and other countries in Europe and South America.

Building on our success, we at 30 Birds are dedicated to ensuring that Afghan girls are able to thrive, regardless if they are calling a new country home, or if they are still in Afghanistan. To do so, we have implemented four major programs:

1. Education in Afghanistan and Pathways to Safety: Despite the challenges faced by women and girls in Afghanistan under the Taliban's education bans, we have partnered with Afghan educators to enable 3,200 girls to access education through underground schools within Afghanistan. Additionally, we are actively working on helping the top 60-90 students from these schools to safely leave Afghanistan each year, primarily via University acceptance abroad. We provide essential support, including assistance with university applications, visas, and scholarships.

2. Mentorship Program: Our girls risked their lives for education and professional aspirations, but now face the challenge of starting over primarily in Canada, where their prior credentials are not recognized. To ensure their long-term success, we have developed a mentorship program with established leaders from prestigious institutions, offering individualized guidance to accelerate their educational and professional goals.

3. Education Program: Our refugees Education Program is designed to support Afghan girls' education through a full suite of services that follows the girls through every stage of their academic career – from identifying programs and schools, to managing every aspect of the application process, to funding scholarships for tuition, to flexible support to help them stay in school.

4. Mental Health Program: Many of our girls are just now starting to process the huge span of emotions they are feeling – from deep gratitude for being alive, to survivor’s guilt when they think of those left behind. Our Mental Health Program will help them process these complex feelings, It has four main components: (1) Small group peer support; (2) Community Centre; (3) On the ground expertise; (4) Micro-grants for maximally flexible needs;  and (5) Intentional culture of mental health.

IRAP’s innovative model of mobilizing legal resources to advocate for refugees and displaced people saves lives, assures safe passage to destination countries, and shapes thought and practice in the United States and around the globe to ensure fair and humane treatment of these vulnerable individuals.

IRAP’s approach is grounded in three distinct but interrelated strategies: 

1. IRAP has created a “virtual public interest law firm”—a firm that is not impeded by geographic boundaries and uses technological solutions to deliver free high-quality representation to people living in, and fleeing from, war, persecution, and political upheaval around the world. We have trained an army of volunteers—1,200 students from 30 law schools in the United States and Canada and pro bono attorneys from over 120 international law firms and multinational corporations—to assist thousands of refugees and displaced people on urgent registration, protection, and resettlement cases.

2. Through impact litigation and systemic advocacy, IRAP is bringing legal challenges to refugee rights violations in the courts, creating solutions to overcoming the legal and bureaucratic impediments in the resettlement process, and developing an enforceable system of legal and procedural rights for refugees and displaced persons worldwide. Working directly with our clients as they navigate the labyrinthine processes, IRAP is often able to identify obstacles of which other institutional players are unaware. Our unique model utilizes lessons learned in individual casework to advocate for systemic changes that benefit broader refugee populations.

3. Finally, a crucial prong of IRAP’s approach is to train the next generation of international human rights advocates. These advocates are essential to ensuring fairness, decency, and adherence to the rule of law throughout the refugee resettlement process.

The International Institute of Los Angeles (IILA) began in 1914 as a response to the needs of women and girls immigrating from Europe and East Asia in adjusting to their new lives in Los Angeles.  Our founding was part of the larger revolutionary vision of a social welfare worker named Edith Terry Bremer, who established the first International Institute in New York in 1910. The **International Institute movement** was unique for its time in its philosophy and approach to this work. It **embraced cultural pluralism by celebrating ethnic diversity** and encouraging immigrants to maintain their native languages, traditions and folk cultures, while also becoming engaged US citizens who contribute to their communities. 

**IILA has played a prominent role in every major refugee and immigrant wave since its founding.** For over a century, we have offered a wide range of services to assist limited-English proficient and low-income individuals achieve self-sufficiency and thrive. Over time, we also **expanded our services** to include a wide array of legal assistance, resettlement of refugees and asylum applicants, survivors of human trafficking, and free or low-cost child care and transportation. We employ over 150 people in 13 locations in Los Angeles County and have a budget of over 20 million dollars. We also have a long history of employing newcomers, who serve as valuable team members who can provide culturally sensitive assistance to those in need.

CORE's mission is to teach low-income adults the technological and professional skills needed to pursue their career aspirations.

Since 1999, Computer CORE helps adults gain the computer and life skills they need to increase their career options. Online classes are offered in basic computer skills such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Docs. Students in need also receive a free refurbished computer. Students are 95% people of color, 70% women, and 95% immigrant, including many Afghan immigrants.

Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) empowers veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations. In 2007, 1st Lt Travis Manion (USMC) was killed in Iraq while saving his wounded teammates. Today, Travis' legacy lives on in the words he spoke before leaving for his final deployment, "If Not Me, Then Who..." Guided by this ethos, veterans continue their service, develop strong relationships with their communities, and thrive in their post-military lives. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation's heroes live on in the next generation.

Amaanah's objective is to provide long-term assistance throughout the entire lifespan of our programs.

Amaanah's objective is to provide long-term assistance throughout the entire lifespan of our programs. From the initial stages of education and scholarships, through job preparedness and entry into the workforce, culminating in the full cycle of individuals becoming Amaanah Ambassadors.

Amaanah's focus is working with women and youth in the refugee community. We have the following programs to help support the long term integration of our refugee community: Teach 360, Lions Soccer Program, Big Sister Circle, Relief services, and Scholarships.

The teach 360 program is an in school support program for refugee students to focus on social, emotional, linguistic and academic support. This is a partnership with schools or the school district while tracking different data points to measure the success of the program.

The Lions program is a free soccer youth boys program aimed at building community through mentorship and sports. We have a dedicated group of volunteer coaches who train and coach the athletes. The program has been able to support students with scholarships for higher education as well. 

The Big Sister Circle is a program geared towards women in building community and also support the women through education. The women learn fundamental English grammar alongside meeting new friends in the community. This hybrid program bridges virtual community with in person life experiences. 

The relief program is geared at short term support. Amaanah can respond in time of natural disaster and support the community through supplies, care packages, financial support, and food support as well. We focus on holistic services to create a deeper impact.

ACTION started in Manila in the Philippines almost 50 years ago by caring for street kids under the bridges.  We incorporated in the US to be able to send funds and people to Manila and then elsewhere.  Since then we have expanded into 38 country, 300 people, three main international offices.  Half of us are now non-North American.  
We send everyone to everywhere by raising up folks all over the world to go all over the world.
What do we do?  We go to the "least of these" with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ, practicing and proclaiming the good news in hard places including areas ureached for the Gospel.

**History**
From the first idea of Mazí in a kitchen in central Athens, residents have been at the heart of what we do. 

An asylum system is hostile by design. In this context, however, it was also inefficient, arbitrary and violent. As the state withdrew access to basic services (healthcare, legal, bureaucratic) in 2019, tens of thousands of people became trapped in dangerous and unsanitary overflowing camps on the Greek islands or across the mainland; stuck in cold and dirty and overcrowded basements of community centres or religious centres; or stuck in travellers’ houses: notoriously unclean, insecure spaces. Working frontline at a community centre and information point, we met people every day with an urgent need of housing for an indefinite period of time. People were stuck in the asylum system; stuck without legal status; stuck without access to healthcare; stuck without the status or tools to rent an apartment, find fulfilling work, and build their own pathways out of their situation in Greece.

We decided to use safe, stable housing as the prime lever for residents to unpick these issues, and to move on. Every day we saw young men come into the centre, up to the information point and ask for support. Typically, state and humanitarian actors distribute aid based on the vulnerability of different groups of displaced people. Someone can be “vulnerable” if they fit within a defined social group (old, young, pregnant, ill). Solo men are always bottom of this list. It is remarkable how quickly you internalise the knowledge that there are no services for a young man as he asks you for help; how quickly you internalise a belief that he will be fine: he is young, he is a man, he is strong. The unspoken thought behind this is: he will be ok sleeping on the street.

**Goals**
We are a small charity, and that enables us to provide genuinely impactful support to each resident we work with. We measure our impact in its depth as well as breadth, and aim to achieve five key goals, increasing each resident’s:

- Stability and access to safe spaces
- Feeling of ownership of living space and the city
- Ability to access services
- Ability to support himself financially
- Feeling of strong mental health

With these five keys residents leave Mazi equipped to support their own independent housing.

**Mission**
Mazí Housing exists to end homelessness and social exclusion for displaced people in Athens. In a world where displacement is a reality and resources are limited, we provide viable housing options and holistic support to those who face barriers to social inclusion. We demonstrate the potential for humane, cost-effective and inclusive housing responses to migration that facilitate positive interactions between all communities, and use our voice to advocate for better policy.

**Activities**
Mazí’s model is unique. We have three years of experience in using housing, safe community spaces and livelihoods support as a lever into inclusion in European societies. We have a strong track record of enabling residents to move on independently from our services: sixty-eight residents have arrived at Mazí without a job since 2020; fifty have left with the tools needed to work and forty-six have left in sustainable employment. Behind these figures are 113 asylum service visits; 38 positive asylum decisions or renewals; 65 legal information sessions; 303 doctor appointments; 24 referrals for psychological support; 3429 hours of language study. There are many indicators of inclusion, self-reliance and independence beyond these: including confidence speaking at house meetings, sense of ownership of living space, ability and willingness to navigate the neighbourhood and the city alone.

**Next Steps**
In three years, we have learnt a lot. We are constantly evolving our programme to reflect the changing context and the needs of our residents. We cannot anticipate the external triggers of these adaptations, but this flexibility ensures that we are making the most of our skills and resources to support residents to be self-reliant. The changes we have seen since the Athenian kitchen in 2018 have not, however, been solely driven by the context in which we work. We have pushed ourselves to become more effective, sustainable and replicable. Looking at the next two years, we have a clear vision of what Mazí looks like:

• To maintain a more stable core team: this means, in 2024, four members of staff for our current operations (average 40 residents over a year)

• We will open up community space to non-residents to meet the shortfall in services as organisations close across Greece

• We will build on our track record to speak about housing; to articulate the weakness of camp-based solutions; and to advocate for better access to rights
• We will collaborate with existing partners, and search for unexpected partnerships, to amplify our voice and its impact
• We are a voice that people listen to about housing and integration in Europe

At ReFOCUS Media Labs, our mission is to empower asylum seekers and refugees by equipping them with modern media skills to overcome the challenges they face, such as limited access to education, language barriers, financial constraints, mental health support, skills training and job placement.

Through our three Media Labs (Lesvos, Athens, Krakow) workshops and original content productions on location (Amsterdam, Berlin, Athens, Krakow) we provide comprehensive education in photography, filmmaking, audio engineering, and graphic design. Moreover, we actively collaborate with our students in the production of impactful dramatic films and documentaries.

Established in 2017 in Lesvos, Greece as a pilot project when we supported the residents of the infamous Moria refugee camp. in 2019 we officially registered ReFOCUS Media Labs as a foundation in Poland, and started formalizing our work. In 2022 we expanded our efforts by adding new media labs in Athens (GR) and Krakow (PL).  Athens was established to support refugees who struggled to secure access to education and job placement in the Greek system, and Krakow was created to support the massive influx of Ukrainian refugees who fled to Poland after the full-scale Russian invasion. Our work throughout our global network of media creation labs demonstrates our commitment to empowering our community members, and ensuring they have a seat at the table in determining our present and future direction. 

Our mission is to transform lives through education, career training, and psychosocial support, and ultimately sustainable employment. 

In Greece, we primarily work with minors and young adults, who are either stuck in the asylum system or struggling to integrate after receiving minimal asylum protection.  In Poland, our focus groups are women and young adults who fled the war, and now put down roots in Poland.  A key highlight of our training is the creation of professional portfolios, an essential tool that enables our beneficiaries to effectively showcase themselves to potential employers. This part of our program is particularly important as many refugees arriving in Europe have faced educational disparities due to conflict, poverty or discrimination in their home countries. Even those who have a university degree often struggle to be recognized in Europe as education systems in their home countries often fail to meet EU standards. As a result, many higher education graduates are forced to adapt and accept employment well below their skill and education level. In most cases this leads to exploitation on the European labor market.

Our programming aims to break the cycle of disadvantage that refugees and asylum seekers encounter in the labor market. By providing a platform for our students to showcase their original work, share their stories, and employ them as teachers, lab coordinators and co-creators we empower them to become skilled professionals within the global media industry. But our work goes beyond the technical training by providing foundational support and safe spaces for people with refugee backgrounds to be accepted and flourish. Put simply, we treat the whole human being. 

Since our establishment in 2017, we have successfully certified hundreds of media students, produced feature films and music videos; internationally published original photography and graphic design, and collaborated with mainstream media partners on investigative reportage.

We've been featured in National Geographic, collaborated on investigative reports with Forensic Architecture, Human Rights Watch, BBC Newsnight, Aljazeera, the Guardian, and BBC Panorama, and also produce our own original podcast "Fractured", which focuses upon refugee issues and human rights violations in Europe and around the world.

What sets ReFOCUS apart is our dedication to mentoring students beyond the traditional classroom setting. We actively collaborate with our students to create compelling films and documentaries based on their own scripts and concepts. Since 2019 ReFOCUS has produced several films directed, filmed and edited by our students and alumni including  “Even After Death”, “Nothing About Us Without Us”, “Dancing Bells”, “Dead End”, Interview" and "Erantzun", all of which were written and directed by community members. 

“Stitches” - our latest film is currently in post production and will premiere in March 2024 at Movies that Matter Film Festival. Our films and work has been internationally recognised and showcased at prestigious film festivals worldwide, including the Human Rights Film Festival Berlin (DE), Movies that Matter Film Festival (Hague, NL), CPH:DOX (Copenhagen, DK), Melbourne International Film Festival (AU), Rotterdam International Film Festival (NL), IDFA (Amsterdam, NL), New Delhi International Film Festival (India), the World International Film Festival (Amsterdam, NL), and the (in)Justice Film Festival (Chicago, US) and many more. 

In recent years we have expanded to reach larger audiences and provide even more community members with employment and pathways to develop their own careers as freelance media creators. We also take a local approach to ensure the settled communities we work with have foundational support. A great example of this local approach is our Art Under Pressure Arts Festival, which was inaugurated in Athens, Greece (May 2023). The festival provided a platform for artists from Athens, both from within our community and the greater cultural community, to showcase their music, art, performance, design, photography, films and critical reportage on issues the community faces. In 2024 the festival will travel throughout Europe and North America in an effort to activate new local communities of artist who can learn from one another and create together. 

At the heart of our organization is a fundamental belief that individuals can make a difference in the issues they see in the world. Our extensive experience in the field working on the front line of the "refugee crisis" in Europe proves that civil actions can have a massive impact in the lives of people at risk, especially when media and governments claim otherwise. These challenges are not intractable, rather they are opportunities for us to think creatively, and work collectively to ensure we build the societies we know are possible. 

And so we remain committed to helping people with real lives in crisis develop the real skills needed to pursue the real futures they envision. No matter how many times the fast news frames people in need as "takers" and "burdens", we are proving every day that it is possible to cultivate givers who enhance and power our society into the future.

OUR HISTORY

The Refugee Education Center is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Grand Rapids, MI that exists to support agency support refugees in their journey to become fully participating members of the West Michigan community.. The education-centered organization was founded in 2006 by a passionate group of Somali Bantu refugees who, as an ethnic group in their native country, were persecuted and prohibited to receive formal education. Upon arrival to the United States, community leaders recognized the incredible new opportunity to receive education and participate in the community as equals. They organized and created what is now the Refugee Education Center with the vision of supporting refugee children in West Michigan as they began their new education in a foreign land. Since 2006, our programs and services have expanded to address additional needs of families - serving over 4,500 refugees along the way. Through this, our vision has stayed the same. It has been, and is, central to the organization to share the knowledge learned from a first-person perspective of navigating the education system and refugee services and ultimately supporting the tens of thousands of refugees who call West Michigan home

OUR APPROACH

We are educators at the core, but we know that life is complex, and every story unique. That’s why we address the needs of not only the students we serve, but the whole family, focused around three core pillars of post-resettlement support:

EDUCATION - We were founded on a belief that education is a gift and an opportunity.  We acknowledge unique needs of refugee students and design our programs and services to coincide with traditional education in order that students may excel academically at an equitable rate as their American-born peers - and prepare for success in their new homeland. 

FAMILY STABILITY - Many complex barriers can interrupt the lives of refugee families. Whether it's a health and safety crisis, job loss, housing challenge or other life-challenge, our team is equipped to walk alongside refugees in these challenges, providing direct support or vital referrals to local social service agencies and programs.

CULTURE AND BELONGING - For many, the United States poses culturally challenging situations that differ from their birth-countries. We seek to prepare refugees to successfully engage with their new culture while also retaining their own cultural identity, values, and traditions.

OUR PROGRAM SERVICES

PROJECT FAULU - Our cornerstone K-12 support program for refugee students, Project Faulu, focuses on literacy and language acquisition, STEM/STEAM curriculum, and socio-emotional wellbeing. The afterschool program is designed specifically for children whose cultural adjustments and past trauma can make learning difficult. Through one-on-one tutoring and peer support groups, our goal is that each student is supported for academic success and social wellbeing.

B.R.I.D.G.E.S. - Building Refugee Independence and Delivering Guidance for Educational Success is designed for newly resettled refugee children who have yet to enter a US classroom. We provide a safe and welcoming environment for kids to prepare for their K-12 education and relieve anxiety prior to entering a classroom. The program exposes kids to new topics, themes, and culture they will encounter in their new school. Our goal is that each participating student is prepared to start school on the right foot! 

GRADUATE & GROW - Graduate & Grow offers broad, individualized support for high school aged students of refugee backgrounds. Through the program, students receive age-out support, graduation plans, mentorship and guidance in order to prepare them to graduate with a traditional High School Diploma, as well as for a successful transition into a career, trade school, and/or post-secondary education. 

REFUGEE NAVIGATORS - Who better to provide guidance and support than someone who has “been there, done that.” For newly arriving refugees, whether one has recently resettled in the United States or has moved from another part of the country, Navigators are a welcoming, familiar face in an unfamiliar place. Navigators, who come from a refugee background themselves, share their lived experiences and are trusted partners, providing guidance through the maze of government and private support systems in the foundational areas that best prepare a person (or family) for long-term integration and full participation. 

HANDS CONNECTED - Hands Connected is a one-of-a-kind program that provides children of refugee background, aged 0-5, with culturally responsive and multi-lingual pre-K — taught by refugee educators. Its primary purpose is to support children’s development in order that they may develop at the same rate as their American-born peers. Additionally, this program creates economic opportunities for refugee adults through direct employment and for those who are learning or working elsewhere and are in need of quality childcare. Hands Connected consists of the Center and the Home-based Educator Network. 

OUR IMPACT

We walk alongside refugees in the post-settlement phase of their journey —continuing services for however long it takes to provide the tools and remove the barriers to fully participate in the community.

+ 80% of enrolled K-12 students showed an increase in at least one letter-grade in one subject or more

+ 100% of enrolled K-12 students showed growth in cultural adjustment as determined by pre- and post- surveys

+ 97% of enrolled K-12 students showed an improved Reading Improvement Score

+ 82% of enrolled K-12 students showed improvement in WIDA Scores (English learners) 

+ 93% of 0-3 year old students passed Brigance Screening (child development & Kindergarten readiness)

In response to the massive destruction of cultural heritage, the world has decided to come together.  Created in 2017, ALIPH is the only global fund that is solely dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage in conflict areas. ALIPH is a unique international cooperation initiative designed to meet the challenge of protecting cultural heritage in conflict areas.  To carry out this mission, the foundation finances preventive measures, emergency interventions and concrete post-conflict rehabilitation projects, all around the world. ALIPH's three areas of intervention are:

 emergency  measures to ensure the security of heritage,  
	 
 post-conflict  actions to enable local populations to once again enjoy their cultural heritage.

Dream Orchestra offers an open and creative space, promoting democratic participation in high-quality music education, where children and young people from Sweden, refugees and migrants from more than 25 different countries equally, become protagonists in celebrating their traditions together. Our goal is to positively influence their human development, offering a safe and joyful environment where they can obtain tools to express themselves, where mutual understanding is strengthened and their sense of self-worth and - esteem is empowered.

Inviting children, young people and their families from all levels of society, to learn to play an instrument in the context of the symphonic orchestra, presents an effective tool to foster social inclusion and peaceful coexistence.In a Dream Orchestra rehearsal you can hear more than 18 languages together.

DO’s learning model strives for excellence and doesn’t exclude anyone, as everyone brings its best to the orchestra and finds their place to add up and share.

Here you learn about music of the world, about the beauty and complexity of musical art and you experience the joy of achieving artistic results with teamwork, love, passion and solidarity.

Guided by its core values and its own safeguarding policy, the staff, teachers and volunteers focus on respecting students' individual rights and guarding their integrity.

The social and emotional impact of this activity in the lives of the children and young people who participate, contributes to better health conditions and gives them new perspectives for the future.

DO receives new students almost every week, not only from Gothenburg but also from surrounding cities. Families make new friends and broaden their social network when participating as volunteers in logistical or social activities. Dream Orchestra also supports training teachers in refugee camps and in countries like Ukraine.

Our organization aims to identify and provide innovative means to spur job growth, provide food security, and eliminate extreme poverty. We aim to facilitate discussions between experts and policymakers to produce practical solutions to overcome the current crisis and achieve long-term economic sustainability for Afghanistan.

ASEF advocates on behalf of Afghans who are currently suffering from starvation, and experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis on earth.  While humanitarian aid is important and a necessity in the short run, we believe such efforts will only be a Band-Aid approach and not sustainable.  To alleviate the current conditions, where some 24 million Afghans are starving, 6 million are at risk of famine, and without aid, 1 million children are at risk of dying, the U.S. and the international community needs to unfreeze the $9.4 billion Afghan reserves, in a phased and responsible manner, and ensure that existing economic sanctions will not harm Afghan civilian livelihood in any way, along with development aid to support civilians.  We deem the current policies against Afghanistan as ineffective and a form of inhumane collective punishment which further increases the plight of the Afghan people.

We believe western policies should not lead to a collapse of the Afghan state, as it would create a power vacuum, bringing about anarchy and civil war. Millions of Afghans would be forced to flee their country seeking refuge in neighboring countries, Europe, and some in the U.S.  Furthermore, Afghanistan would become a terrorist haven and a narco-state. The cost ramifications of a failed Afghan state to the international community will be immense, whereas some of the solutions, e.g. sanction relief and release of frozen funds will be at no cost to the U.S. 

The Afghan people are resilient, innovative, and entrepreneurs at heart, and we believe the international community needs to remove the barriers that are holding them back. At ASEF we advocate for a sustainable Afghan economy.

Mastering a new skill changes that – it grows their confidence and helps them realize that they ARE valuable and CAN be successful.

Natural disasters. Famine. War. Climate change – which itself sets off a spiral of crises related to food insecurity, migration, and economic and political conflict. 
These challenges are an everyday reality for millions of people around the world. What’s worse, in traumatic situations, groups that are already vulnerable – like women, children, people with disabilities, and refugees – face increased risk and danger. They are cut off from their homes, livelihoods, support networks of extended family and friends. In many ways they lose all semblance of stability – things that we too often take for granted as we go about our daily lives.
In the midst of this uncertainty, it is understandable that people question whether they will ever be safe again. Compounded by feelings of helplessness and the prospect of relying on others to provide for yourself and your family, a person can be adrift in a sea of shame or embarrassment. This loss of personal dignity can add insult to an already overwhelming situation.
It is only from a place of support, stability, and strength that people can rebuild their lives after trauma, be those the result of man-made or natural disasters. And as a community of allies and advocates for relief and development, it is critical that we accompany them and work together as equals to rebuild stronger than before – reaffirming individuals’ dignity as we chart a path to a more resilient future.
