The mission of Coalition for Rainforest Nations (www.cfrn.org) is to slow, stop and reverse global deforestation.

The Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering rainforest countries to assume a leadership role in the fight against climate change. Through policy support, capacity building, and direct finance, CfRN incentivizes developing countries to slow, stop, and reverse deforestation through the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) mechanism. REDD+ is now universally recognized as one of the most immediate mitigation actions that preserves the planet’s rainforests and directly addresses the climate emergency.

CfRN’s Origins and the Promise of REDD+
Inspired by the call of Papua New Guinea’s former Prime Minister, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, to equitably preserve the planet’s rainforests, CfRN’s Executive Director, Kevin Conrad, who grew up in Papua New Guinea, and Managing Director Federica’s Bietta, who is from Italy, lead the Coalition for Rainforest Nations. By advancing REDD+, their aim was to give rainforest nations a voice within international climate negotiations and define rainforests as worth more alive than dead. 

REDD+ was introduced in 2005 at the Eleventh Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by the newly formed Coalition for Rainforest Nations. Founding nations, Costa Rica and Papua New Guinea, envisioned REDD+ as a way to assign a financial value to forests for the role they play in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and not just as a source of logged timber, agriculture, or grazing lands.  REDD+ (Forestry) is the only sector to enjoy a unique article in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement (Article 5).  Furthermore, REDD+ preserves forests at the scale and speed needed to keep 1.5 alive – the goal prescribed under the Paris Agreement of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°Celsius. 

The REDD+ mechanism was developed over the years at successive COP meetings, as shown in the timeline below. As a result of CfRN’s leadership, rainforests are now recognized as a critical climate solution under the UNFCCC.  

What We Do
CfRN’s work encompasses three key areas: policy support; capacity building; and direct finance. The collective goal of these programs is to effectively reward countries for the work they do to preserve their forests. The Coalition provides direct policy support during all UNFCCC negotiating sessions and works in-country to help develop conservation policies, laws, and national forest protection plans. CfRN also trains countries’ experts to build the expertise needed to gather data required by the UNFCCC to report forest conservation results. CfRN works to ensure that rainforest countries are compensated for verified emission reductions under REDD+, as promised under the Paris Agreement. 

Policy Support
As a UNFCCC-recognized Negotiating Group, CfRN establishes and advances positions on behalf of its countries – over fifty rainforest nations —at all UNFCCC sessions. In this capacity, CfRN strives to advance the REDD+ mechanism and ensure that climate finance is allocated equitably to rainforest nations. Currently, CfRN is working to ensure that REDD+ is fully represented in the rulebook of the Paris Agreement. 

Technical Training & Capacity Building 
Countries’ results are eligible for financial compensation through REDD+ only after rigorous measurement, reporting and verification data are submitted, reviewed, and deemed to conform to UNFCCC guidelines. REDD+ results are then registered on the UNFCCC REDD+ Information Hub and made available to the public to review in detail. In its capacity building role, CfRN helps countries develop national technical expertise to take stock of their forest resources, create national plans to preserve them, and submit their data to the REDD+ registry at the UNFCCC in a consistent manner with their climate pledges, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to the Paris Agreement. 

Direct Finance
To date, rainforest countries have not been compensated for the majority of their REDD+ emissions reductions, as promised. Though certain governments including Norway, the U.K., and Germany, have paid bilaterally for some results, this is far from sufficient. CfRN’s finance work helps rainforest nations raise debt funding and receive performance-based compensation. The sale and trading of REDD+ Paris Agreement-compliant carbon credits is a growing source of climate finance. These credits are available for purchase through CfRN’s REDD.plus platform. Over the next few years, our member countries will bring a pipeline of sovereign carbon credits to market representing Paris Agreement-compliant emissions reductions, resulting from member country efforts to keep their rainforests standing.

FWI reduces the suffering of farmed fish by researching and executing evidence-based interventions in high-priority contexts.

The mission of Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is to reduce the suffering of farmed fish as much as possible. We do that specifically by researching and testing evidence-based welfare interventions, and then implementing them in high priority contexts. Our main implementation program right now focuses on collaborative farmer outreach in India to improve water quality and reduce stocking densities. As of this writing, this program currently works with about 100 farms (www.fwi.fish/farmers). FWI also invests significantly in research to identify and test more promising welfare improvements (www.fwi.fish/post/rnd-plans-2024).

Compassion in World Farming

The Albert Schweitzer Foundation works to eliminate cruel farming practices in Germany and to boost the use of plant proteins.

More than 60 billion farm animals are slaughtered every year. Inadequate welfare requirements and legal protections mean that the overwhelming majority of these animals suffer greatly, living their entire lives in crowded, uncomfortable, unhealthy conditions. While recent progress on these issues in Europe is promising, welfare standards in some sectors are still very low. Albert Schweitzer Foundation (ASF) works to raise standards in Germany and in the European Union. ASF also works to boost the use of plant proteins and to reduce the amount of animal products in the supply chains of large buyers such as supermarket chains and catering companies.

The Lobby Register Act (LobbyRG) requires us to disclose the names and places of residence (without specific addresses) of all donors who donate €20,000 or more to us in a calendar year on www.lobbyregister.bundestag.de (site of the German Parliament). If you prefer not to be mentioned, the only option is to donate less than €20,000.

Evidence Action scales evidence-based and cost-effective programs to reduce the burden of poverty. 

Evidence Action was founded in 2013 to address a big gap in the fight against global poverty – many of the most promising interventions are either implemented at a very small scale, or not at all. We set out to address this gap by building programs that would scale evidence-based and cost-effective interventions, leading to significant improvements in quality of life for hundreds of millions of people.

Our model worked. Since then, our interventions have reached more than 530 million people. This success is achieved through the dedication and talent of our staff, the hard work of our partners, and the commitment of our supporters.

Our Accelerator is the engine for our new program development. To find the most cost-effective solutions in the world, we explore untapped opportunities with the greatest potential for impact. Through a rigorous process, we test groundbreaking health and development interventions, selecting those with a proven ability to reduce the burden of poverty at scale. This focus allows us to maximize the impact made for every single dollar invested.

**Programs:**

**Safe Water Now**

We provide sustained safe water access to communities through water treatment – one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent childhood illnesses and death. Safe Water Now programming in Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, and India uses innovative, low-cost approaches like chlorine dispensers and automatic in-line chlorination. With local government and community buy-in, we reach nearly 10 million people with safe water access and have saved the lives of more than 15,000 children under 5 years old. Now, we are scaling in partnership with the Government of India to reach tens of millions more.

**Deworm the World** 

We help improve children's health, education, and long-term wellbeing by treating parasitic worm

infections at schools. In partnership with governments in Kenya, Nigeria, India, and Pakistan, Evidence Action designs, scales, and sustains cost-effective mass deworming programs. Since 2014, Deworm the World has helped governments deliver 2 billion deworming treatments to children, dramatically reducing worm prevalence and collectively increasing economic productivity by an estimated $23 billion USD.

**Equal Vitamin Access**

We combat the leading cause of childhood malnutrition and disability in low- and middle-income countries by helping to deliver essential supplementation. Equal Vitamin Access provides end-to-end support to governments in India and Malawi to address anemia by leveraging our school-based deworming platform to offer iron and folic acid supplementation cost effectively. In 2023 alone, our program reached 35.8 million children with weekly treatments, giving them a

better chance to develop into strong, healthy adults.

**Syphilis-Free Start**

We safeguard the health of pregnant women and their unborn children by enabling access to low-cost syphilis screening and treatment as part of prenatal care. We partner with governments in Liberia, Cameroon, and Zambia to prevent disability, neonatal

mortality, and stillbirths resulting from congenital syphilis. Syphilis-Free Start’s timely detection and treatment prevented 2,300 adverse outcomes such as blindness, neurological issues, and hearing loss between 2021 and 2023, including 1,300 lives saved.

Rethink Priorities is a research organization that conducts critical research to inform policymakers and major foundations about how to best help people and nonhuman animals in both the present and the long-term future.

Our research spans everything from animal welfare to the threat of nuclear war. We explore neglected but promising areas to improve the world and try to further build the community of researchers working on understanding how to do this most effectively.

Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in the United States with a globally distributed team dedicated to impactful animal advocacy. Our mission is to find and promote the most effective ways to help animals. We work toward that mission by evaluating charities, sharing our findings, awarding grants to organizations and promising projects, and fundraising for our recommended charities and grantees. Our organization opposes all systems of oppression and recognizes that they are connected and mutually reinforcing. Ultimately, our vision is a world in which no individual is given less than full moral consideration on the basis of any morally irrelevant feature of their identity, including species membership.

ACE is proud to be considered a leader in the effective animal advocacy movement. Our research comparing the different approaches to reducing the suffering of animals has led to rigorously reviewing charities that work to end factory farming and create meaningful change for farmed and wild animals. Through our Recommend Charity Fund, we have raised and distributed $8.1M to our effective recommended charities. Our Movement Grants program has awarded $5.3M to promising animal advocacy projects around the globe. Since we began tracking this metric in 2014, we estimate that ACE has helped to influence nearly $60M within the animal advocacy movement.

Most of us want to make a difference. We see suffering, injustice and death, and are moved to do something about them. But working out what that ‘something’ is, let alone actually doing it, can be a difficult and disheartening challenge.

Effective altruism is a response to this challenge. It is a research field which uses high-quality evidence and careful reasoning to work out how to help others as much as possible. It is also a community of people taking these answers seriously, by focusing their efforts on the most promising solutions to the world's most pressing problems.
