La Forêt Retrouvée aids reforestation, food security, health, education & self-reliance in Madagascar through agroforestry efforts

\*\*History\*\*  

Madagascar, the world’s fifth-largest island, separated from the African continent around 120 million years ago, preserving a unique biodiversity: 80 to 90% of its plant and animal species are endemic. However, this natural wealth is under threat due to extreme poverty: 8 out of 10 people live below the poverty line, forcing populations to exploit forest resources for survival. Reforestation in Madagascar has thus become a vital issue, both ecologically and humanitarily.  

The Boeny region in particular faces critical environmental challenges, notably recurring forest fires that threaten local ecosystems, endemic biodiversity, and surrounding communities.  

It is in this context that \*La Forêt Retrouvée\* was born, the result of a meeting between Ange, a Corsican passionate about nature, and Judith, a native of Mahajanga. Their love story became a collective adventure: faced with deforestation and bushfires, they refused to remain spectators and bought degraded land to launch an agroforestry project. In 2019, the NGO was founded, quickly rallying families, children, and villagers around a reforestation and resilience project.  

After Ange’s tragic passing in 2022, Lionel, a loyal friend, joined Judith to continue and expand this mission, marking the beginning of a new chapter based on continuity, friendship, and collective commitment.

\*\*Objectives\*\*  

\*La Forêt Retrouvée\* aims to restore the degraded ecosystems of the Boeny region, preserve Madagascar’s exceptional biodiversity, and improve the living conditions of local communities. The NGO’s objectives include:  

- Reforesting and restoring 135 hectares of land, integrating 115 different plant species.  
- Combating deforestation and recurring fires, which are devastating to wildlife, flora, and communities.  
- Promoting agroforestry, an approach that integrates trees, food crops, and people in a sustainable balance.  
- Supporting the food, economic, and social autonomy of partner villages.  
- Raising environmental awareness and educating, particularly among younger generations.

The missions of \*La Forêt Retrouvée\* are organized around four main pillars:  

- \*\*Endemic reforestation & biodiversity conservation\*\*: creating and managing nature reserves, restoring degraded areas, conducting a scientific inventory of endemic plants in partnership with the Botany Department of Majunga, and developing botanical trails.  
- \*\*Fighting deforestation\*\*: implementing reforestation programs, offering sustainable economic alternatives, and supporting communities to reduce dependence on charcoal and slash-and-burn agriculture.  
- \*\*Community development\*\*: promoting sustainable agricultural practices, strengthening local capacities, and improving access to water, healthcare, education, and nutrition for over 2,500 direct and indirect beneficiaries.  
- \*\*Awareness & education\*\*: rebuilding schools, conducting educational activities in villages, providing environmental training, and involving visitors through responsible ecotourism.

Since its creation, \*La Forêt Retrouvée\* has undertaken many concrete actions:  

- Initiated the reforestation of 135 hectares, planting nearly 20,000 trees, flowers, and plants from over 100 species.  
- Established an irrigation system to ensure the survival of the plantations.  
- Rebuilt the Mangaroa school and organized educational activities for children.  
- Created a nursery, a mobile library ("bibliobus"), and vegetable gardens.  
- Built a staff residence and a guest house to host visitors and volunteers, promoting ecotourism and environmental awareness.  
- Launched health programs: providing medical and nutritional consultations for teams and surrounding villages.  
- Carried out cultural and educational actions: “Arts in the Bush,” “Night of the Stars,” training in natural fertilizers, family planning, and health in rural areas.

\*\*Current Activities\*\*  

Today, \*La Forêt Retrouvée\* continues and expands its initiatives:  

- Building a new health clinic to improve access to medical care in the region.  
- Creating a biodiversity discovery trail for visitors and students to explore the site's botanical richness.  
- Conducting scientific cataloging of the plants present on the land, in partnership with local institutions.  
- Building a new residence for staff and volunteers to strengthen on-site hospitality and training.  
- Further developing agroforestry and ecotourism, with the guest house enabling responsible and participatory immersion.  
- Supporting companies in their CSR efforts through customized training and team-building activities.

The NGO is preparing ambitious new projects to strengthen its impact:  

- Creating a school on the site of \*La Forêt Retrouvée\* and launching a digital school project for Mangaroa, to broaden access to education.  
- Offering training in hospitality and catering to facilitate professional integration for local youth.  
- Acquiring a school bus to improve access to education.  
- Modernizing the nursery to increase plant production capacity and diversity.  
- Setting up a mechanical workshop and providing a pedagogical support facilitator for children facing difficulties.  
- Establishing a mini-nursery for young children.  
- Continuing the development of agroforestry, scientific research, and environmental awareness efforts, aiming to become a model of ecological and social resilience for Madagascar and beyond.

What is Mutual Aid?

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable
- Providing all kinds of support, ranging from food prep to childcare to translation to emotional support, and recognizing the value of all of them
- A political education opportunity, where we build the relationships and analysis to understand why we are in the conditions that we're in
- Preparation for the next disaster (natural or economic). Next time around we'll already have relationships with each other and know who is vulnerable and needs support
- A great jumping off point for other kinds of organizing and movement work

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.

Ward 2 Mutual Aid

Delivering unconditional cash directly to the world's poorest households via secure mobile transfers. 

Since 2009, GiveDirectly has delivered more than $580 million in unconditional cash transfers to families in need. These one-time cash transfers allow recipients to invest in what they need most and have been shown to improve their earnings, children’s school attendance, health, nutrition, and mental well-being.
 
GiveDirectly uses government data to target villages where most or all residents are living in extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as earning under $2.15/day. In-country GiveDirectly staff enroll one member of each household in the entire village to receive a one-time transfer of about $1,000 USD sent in two installments using mobile money. Recipients can then withdraw the mobile funds as cash with local agents and use the funds to invest in what they need – whether it’s on starting a business, education, making their home safer/sturdier, healthcare, or livestock.
 
GiveDirectly uses rigorous experimental research (randomized controlled trials) to measure the impact of their unconditional cash programs and answer public policy questions, generating evidence on key design and implementation questions across varied contexts. We give small mills everything they need to add vital nutrients into the food that millions of malnourished people eat the most.

Sanku combats hidden hunger and saves lives by giving small mills the tools needed to fortify maize flour, an East African staple. Our mission: Guarantee that every meal consumed by every mother & child contains vital nutrients, forever. 

Worldwide, 8,000 children die every day and 2 billion suffer from preventable illness because their diets lack basic vitamins and minerals. Fortification (adding life-saving micronutrients to processed foods) is the most cost-effective nutrition intervention, but it has failed to reach the 6.5 billion people in developing countries who rely on small, often rural, mills for most of their food.

Sanku developed a technology and business model to enable the small mills that feed the most malnourished people to conveniently and affordably fortify staple grains. Our technology adds precise levels of nutrients into flour during processing and our business model leverages economies of scale to offset any additional costs for millers and their customers, providing Sanku with revenue margins that increase as we scale. We are currently reaching 3 million East Africans with the basic human right of nutritious food and have a plan to reach 100 million this decade, which will prevent millions from death and disease, boost productivity, and save billions of dollars in GDP.  

A donation of ~$1 is enough to give one person access to nutritious food for an entire year, so even a small donation can go a long way in the fight against malnutrition.

Sanku

City Relief exists to create connections for the hurting and homeless to resources and hope.

City Relief uses mobile resource centers to assist people dealing with poverty and homelessness. These outreaches happen eight times a week in different areas of New York City and New Jersey. We serve hot meals, provide hygiene kits and socks, help our guests to feel safe and comfortable, invite our guests into community with staff, volunteers and other guests, treat them with dignity and compassion, and provide an opportunity to speak to our trained staff who will connect them to life-changing resources and a community of care.

We exist thanks to private donations and for as little as $1.05, you can provide a meal for someone that would have to choose between eating and another necessity. Providing multi-pronged support to 3000 under-privileged children daily. 

For over 7 decades, DCCW has been aspiring to live up to its mission to “give children a childhood and a future” by helping under-privileged children in and around Delhi who face challenges they cannot overcome.  We achieve this through programs in the areas of health, nutrition, pre-school education, vocational training, supervised homework schemes, rehabilitation of special needs children and educational sponsorship.  One of our best-known programs is PALNA, our home for lost and abandoned children, where alongside we run a very successful adoption program. Today, these services reach out to 3000 children daily through our 15 centres and are provided to them virtually free of cost. 

DCCW runs  on donations from corporates, institutions and individuals. 



All our programs are targeted at children from low-income families.



-	PALNA: our home and adoption centre for abandoned, lost and homeless children (one centre; 70-80 children resident at any time) 

-	Palna WeeKids: prepares under-privileged pre-school children for admission into schools (13 centres; 900+  beneficiaries annually)

-	Educational Sponsorship: Provides financial assistance to school-going children ( ~900 beneficiaries annually)

-	Supervised Homework Scheme – helps school-going children with their schoolwork (14 centres; ~300 beneficiaries annually)

-	Vocational Training: Teaches income-generating skills (Computers, Tally, Beauty culture, Tailoring) to adolescent girls, mostly school-dropouts (13 centres ; ~1000 beneficiaries annually) 

-	Bal Chetna – provides day-care and rehabilitation therapies to special needs children to help them achieve their potential (Pre-pandemic 3 centres ~100 beneficiaries; only one centre re-started to date)



DCCW is being run by a professional and very dedicated team and an Executive Committee (governing board) of volunteer members. DCCW has received accreditation from Credibility Alliance, Give India, Benevity, CAF America, testifying integrity and transparency as a donation-supported NGO.

🍲 Gaza Soup Kitchen: Feeding 10,000 People Daily

As famine tightens its grip and markets collapse, Gaza Soup Kitchen is still boiling pots—feeding 1,000 people every day with dignity and determination.

We were the first soup kitchen in North Gaza to lean on local farmers and forage from nature to keep people alive. When others paused, we adapted. When supplies ran out, we improvised.

Today, we operate across 11 kitchens, run a community clinic, and deliver clean water and hot meals to hospitals—even in the hardest-hit zones.

This is survival work, done by people living through the very crisis they’re responding to.

Friends of Hope (HOPE) is a nonprofit whose mission is to build a nation where every Filipino can achieve their full potential.

HOPE targets the most vulnerable populations to create systemic change in three main service areas, specifically **Education**, **Agriculture/Livelihood**, and **Environment**.

**Education** - HOPE invests in education infrastructure to help turn the tide for millions of Filipino children that rely on public schools to secure their futures. We work with the Philippines' Department of Education and underserved communities across the Philippines to build bright and beautiful public school classrooms for young learners, no matter how remotely located they are. To date, HOPE has constructed 130 classrooms and counting since 2012.

**Agriculture/Livelihood** - HOPE supports some of the most marginalized members of the country – smallholder coconut farmers. We carry out interventions to enrich their livelihoods such as seedling distribution, technical support provision, and building linkages to markets and micro-entrepreneurship opportunities. To date, HOPE’s agriculture programs have enriched the livelihoods of nearly 30,000 farmers and their families through the replanting and distribution of close to 2 million trees.

**Environment** - HOPE implements the Aling Tindera (or women micro-entrepreneurs) program, a market-based solution against the plastic pollution crisis. We engage women micro-entrepreneurs and informal workers to manage collection points, where members of the community can sell their plastic waste. This mechanism provides incremental income to the women, encourages behavior change among households, and helps clean up the environment. Currently, there are over 140+ Aling Tindera sites all over the country, helping address plastic waste management issues in their communities.

Our efforts with our partners are increasingly visible in the country, positioning us as champions for responsible business and social justice. For this, we have received recognitions such as the Grand Prize for Developmental Social Enterprise awarded by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Best New Brand and Best CSR awarded by the Global Bottled Water Awards. We have also gained credibility as an institution for collective impact through our partnerships with organizations like USAID, GIZ, Vita Coco, Gcash, and Century Pacific Food Inc.

We believe that watching the way people are suffering and keep complaining will worsen the situation, but standing up, doing what you are able to do, saves lives. Our Founder and Executive Director has a deep and broad understanding of the community problems we are resolving. Marcel lived in Dzaleka refugee camp Malawi for 11 years after fleeing insecurity from the Eastern of DRC his home country. Being a refugee, he knows well what it means. In DRC Marcel knows well how better life before the conflicts; this gives us have and clear understanding of the context of the current humanitarian crisis but also the ability to conceive adapted and long-lasting solutions. We do this work because of having experienced the same life in the same communities but also, we are passionate about it, brief, serving with compassion is our passion. Being part of these communities, their challenges are our challenges, we are conscious that if we do not do anything no one will do it.

SERVICES

Our current intervention has its greater attention on Education, Economic empowerment and livelihood, Food Security, and water and Sanitation (Wash).

A. EDUCATION

1. Primary and secondary school 

 Since 2015 we are running a school that provides access to primary school to over 1000 forcibly displaced children (refugee and asylum seekers) at Dzaleka refugee camp Malawi. Every year we have 40 students’ refugees and Malawians under our Secondary School Sponsorship program, 90% are girls. 

2. Take the Lead

Fountain Of Hope Africa in collaboration with Mexoxo and the eCornell University to promote education for the most disadvantaged.
Through this collaboration we provide access to skills-based instruction to refugees, asylum seekers and other underserved people especially women. Program participants complete online courses delivered through eCornell in leadership, entrepreneurship, time management, and career exploration to prepare for entrepreneurship, employment, and community involvement.
The content is designed for pairing with other social and educational programming and provides participants with a foundation for launching careers that earn a living income and promote sustainable self-sufficiency.                                                                           

3. School recovery program 

In the Eastern of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), we are running a School Recovery Program in Bukavu and the surrounding territories, that is currently serving over 500 children. This Accelerated Learning Programs provides education opportunities to out-of-school minors survivors of armed conflicts and poverty who are between the age of 12 and 17. The program compresses the equivalent of the six-year primary program into three years, allowing students to re- enter the formal education system at the secondary level or qualify for vocational training. To promote inclusion in education, this program prioritizes teen mothers due to their higher level of vulnerability due to stigma and exclusion from education while boys are all accepted even when after impregnating girls.

4. Higher education sponsorship

This program is designed to Empower girls Enhance women education in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It creates high education opportunities for marginalized girl by sponsoring their College/University learning cycle. The program supports the beneficiaries with tuition fees and learning materials and it gives a special consideration to those survivors of SGBVs. B. ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT AND POVERTY ALLEVIATION

Our Economic Empowerment and poverty alleviation program aims to build a strong and long-lasting self-reliance among individuals, families, and communities. We provide business literacy to women and youth, access to capital, mentorship, and coaching; 93% of the beneficiaries supported during the last 5 years were able to sustain and grow they business, and 78% were able to employ at least one more person from their communities. I addition to this we provide vocational skills to women to boost entrepreneurship and maximize the utilization of their potentials for their economic independence. For COVID-19 response 1002 vulnerable households benefited from our unconditional social cash transfer that allowed them to overcome the socio-economic effects of the global pandemic.

C. FOOD SECURITY
Using ecology friendly methodologies, we are supporting smallholder farmers with agriculture technics through training, mentoring, and coaching, and help them access agriculture inputs.  These efforts are revitalizing farmland, improving food security, rural livelihood, and economic recovery. We mobilized the communities in cooperatives and give them access hybrid seeds and trained them in organic fertilizer production. This program is extended to a food relief Aid for in need communities that are vulnerable to food insecurity, due to armed conflicts, climate and or economic shocks.

D. WATER AND SANITATION (WASH)

Due to the water crisis and the congestion of Dzaleka refugee supply, we deliver potable water to over 1000 refugee households and 9 community schools in the camp daily on daily basis.
In the Eastern of the Democratic Republic of Congo we are actively engaged in easing the access to clean water and sanitation facilities in rural areas, schools and health facilities; according to UNICEF over 30 million people in DRC have no access to clean water and nearly 30% do not have access to sanitation facilities. This program is extended to a Fairfood Relief Aid for in need communities that are vulnerable to food insecurity, due to armed conflicts, climate and or economic shocks. FOH intention is to support families that are food insecure, especially during the lean months where the cost of food and the scarcity of food increases significantly in Malawi and the Eastern of DRC.

E. FUTURE PLANNED ACTIVITIES

We are not limited to advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the education system in the Democratic Republic of Congo where teen mothers face stigma and exclusion from the formal education regardless of the circumstances of their pregnancies while boys are fully accepted even when they have kids; same for other children who might appear physically different. 
We are also planning to promote digital inclusion in the education system in the Democratic Republic of Congo where the majority of students from primary to high school level without access to digital resources. 
For food security we are planning to include advocacy for land access and ownership in rural areas where traditionally women do not own land while they constitute over 60% of the agriculture labor. Another planned component for our school recovery program is to rescue children who are victims of child labor and exploitation in mining. 
At Dzaleka refugee camp Malawi where less than 40% of the school aged children have access to education, our projection is to double the number of refugee children who are accessing primary and secondary school by expanding our school with new classrooms, furniture and personnel by the end of 2024. In Bukavu DRC building a modern vocational training center in order to empower the thousand of young girls and boys victims of armed conflicts and who missed the opportunity to access formal education du to conflicts; the priority will be given to teen mothers, former child soldiers who were forcibly enrolled in armed groups, street children and those living with physical disabilities.

Rogue Valley Street Dogs (formerly known as Street Dog Project) was founded in 2013. We first operated as a program of Friends of the Animal Shelter in Jackson County, Oregon. In 2021, Street Dog Project was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are a community service public charity that focuses on improving the quality of life of pets affected by homelessness and poverty.

Our primary mission is to provide free spay/neuter services for animals of the unhoused and no/very low income in order to improve the lives of animals and prevent overpopulation.

To establish trust and improve the quality of life for dogs and cats, we provide limited high-quality food, collars, leashes, harnesses, coats, and other items to help pets in need. We also provide vouchers for low-cost vaccine clinics and help with flea/tick/worm medications and veterinary care when able.

As we continue to make spay and neuter our priority, we believe that a holistic approach with an educational platform to provide long-term, meaningful help will improve the lives of dogs and cats and prevent more animals from entering shelters, being euthanized, or leading a life of suffering.

We strongly believe in collaboration and work closely with partners who serve the unhoused communities and animals in Southern Oregon. We provide food and gear and host outreach events where we distribute donations and work with people to spay and neuter their pets.

There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.
