GiveDirectly uses government data to target villages where most or all residents are living in extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as earning under $2.15/day. In-country GiveDirectly staff enroll one member of each household in the entire village to receive a one-time transfer of about $1,000 USD sent in two installments using mobile money. As Sudan’s health system has collapsed under the weight of war and mass displacement, the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) is delivering lifesaving care on the front lines. SAPA provides emergency and primary healthcare, hunger relief, water, sanitation and hygiene services, and mental health and psychosocial support, including care for survivors of gender-based violence.

SAPA’s mobile clinics and facility-based teams have treated over 1 million beneficiaries across 13 states in Sudan, delivering over 2 million meals, building 900+ mobile clinics and rehabilitating 130+ healthcare facilities. Annually, SAPA treats hundreds of thousands of patients.

All SAPA-supported healthcare sites are locally staffed by Sudanese healthcare professionals. SAPA works with local communities to restore and sustain primary healthcare in underserved and conflict-affected areas. Through an intensive training program, they gain skills to guide a ChezaCheza session, where they teach children how dance can be a tool for expressing their feelings, releasing stress, and building confidence.

Each session incorporates Dance Movement Therapy, Social-Emotional Learning and Mindfulness Meditation.

Organized volunteers providing outreach to unhoused folks with urgent relief: warmth, food, humanity, and  connection to services.

Town Bizness exists to bring the necessities of a dignified human life to the unhoused population of Oakland and Berkeley, CA. 
These necessities include good food, reliable shelter, clothing, toiletries, bedding, and basic creature comforts such as safe propane stoves and heaters, radios, and more, depending on each client’s needs. 

We also assist with housing, and keeping folks connected to service providers by supplying telephones and monthly service. 

The majority of folks we serve were born where they now live in tents, and once had property ownership in their families here in the bay area, but no longer do. Most are seniors, and many of them are now sick and/or disabled.

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.

In general, Fund Managers will review grantmaking decisions on a quarterly basis, based on the value of Funds and the available options for high-impact grantmaking. We may disburse funds outside of quarterly review dates if we become aware of a particularly promising and time-sensitive funding.

**How will my contribution be used?**

All funds are granted out — every dollar contributed to the Fund will be used to make grants directly to end-user organizations creating a real difference.

Whether it is a holiday, a cloudy or rainy day, SLM never varies from the set schedule, giving the homeless a stable option throughout the year.

SLM is an established 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a board of directors, and is very different from many “feeding ministries.” It serves a unique role in the way it cares for the homeless and the hungry in San Mateo/Santa Clara Counties. Hot, home cooked meals served in outdoor venues are less threatening for our homeless neighbors, fostering a safe environment for relational connections to develop with the SLM leaders and volunteers. These connections build trust for guiding homeless friends toward healthier decisions, medical assistance, detox, rehab, housing, mentorship and counseling. In addition to food and encouragement, SLM provides clothing, toiletry kits, sleeping bags, medical supplies, temporary shelter, recovery services and job assistance to those in need. 

SLM is also unique because it places its staff and its services “in the streets”, and “in the camps”, where the homeless live. It reaches more homeless people directly in those street locations than traditional professional service agencies. Additionally, no other homeless non-profit in the area provides local residents with the large number (over 6000 hours per year, estimated) of volunteer hours of opportunity to meet directly and be served on a face to face basis as we do. Homeless folks need love, care, trustworthy friends, and reliable, regular support to improve and/or recover. SLM is “in the trenches and on the street” every day, helping our homeless neighbors. SLM’s outreach can be accessed at all hours of the day and night.

**Our mission is to save the world's coral reefs.**

Coral reefs support over 500 million people around the world by providing food, income, coastal protection, and more. They provide over $375 billion per year in goods and services. And despite only covering 0.1% of the earth’s surface, they contain the highest number of species of any ecosystem besides rainforests.

We work at local, regional, and global levels to keep coral reefs healthy, so they can adapt to climate change and survive for generations to come. As one of the largest global NGOs focused exclusively on protecting coral reefs, the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has used cutting-edge science and community engagement for more than 30 years to reduce direct threats to reefs and to promote scalable and effective solutions for their protection.

**Our Programs**

***Western Caribbean***: We partner with local communities to reduce local threats to reefs, including overfishing and wastewater pollution, and build regional collaborations.

***Hawaiian Islands***: We demonstrate how to use native species to stabilize sediment on land before it enters the ocean, and we support the state’s goal to transition away from ineffective wastewater treatment systems.

***Global Conservation Science***: We develop conservation resources based on innovative science and give conservation practitioners around the world easy ways to incorporate evolution into MPA network planning.

To create the conditions in which corals can adapt to climate change, we work at three different scales:

**Local**
We keep corals healthy so they can adapt to their changing environment by partnering with communities who depend on coral reefs for food and income, and working with them to effectively address local stressors, such as overfishing and land-based pollution.

**Regional**
We protect connected areas of reef to allow evolutionary adaptation to occur through the movement of coral larvae by ensuring that marine spatial planning efforts protect the diversity required to fuel evolution, and by establishing collaborations to build momentum to address key threats.

**Global**
We ensure conservation planning around the world protects the diversity of corals required for evolutionary adaptation by building alliances across the conservation community and providing tools and guidance that can help others implement adaptation-smart conservation.

Rainforest Trust saves endangered wildlife and protects our planet through partnerships, community engagement and donor support.

So far, we have protected more than 50 million acres by establishing protected areas in partnership with local organizations and engaged communities across more than 72 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia-Pacific.

We are confident that the simplest and most cost-effective solution to prevent deforestation is to create legally-recognized protected areas where forests and their species can continue contributing to the health of the global ecosystem.

Our unique, cost-effective conservation model has been implemented successfully for over 30 years.

Through highly effective partnerships, we ensure sustainable results necessary for the long-term protection of tropical ecosystems and the wildlife they hold. Our reserves are exemplary models of international conservation. Rainforest Trust identifies critical sites that provide a permanent refuge for endangered species, but that face immediate and direct threats typically from loggers, miners or ranchers.

We work with local communities to protect wild lands

We establish strategic partnerships with local communities and committed conservationists, providing technical capacity and support while respecting and embracing local knowledge and land stewardship that is key to achieving long-term land management and species protection.

Protection requires swift action, and we work with our partners to develop scientifically-based conservation plans that are not only timely, but also resilient and sustainable. Our partners work closely with their national governments and local communities to formally establish reserves protecting the land.

These protected areas are established through direct land purchase; designation in cooperation with governments and communities; and community-managed areas that secure communal lands occupied by indigenous groups which depend on the land for their survival.

Rainforest Trust

We help people in crisis by providing emergency health services, and then promote self-reliance through training.

We are a global humanitarian organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering. Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, we are a nonprofit with no political or religious affiliation, and now have more than 7,500 staff members around the world, more than 97% of whom are local.
