Why LilyPads Was Started

Our founder's family has spent much time at UVA Children’s Hospital (and Boston Children's Hospital) when their daughter, Lily, was little and fighting for her life. The medical care was excellent — but the days were long, the nights were sleepless, and the costs piled up fast. They often felt like they were alone and drowning.

That’s where the seed for LilyPads was planted.

They wondered, *what if there was a better way?*
What if families had a soft place to land — a real bed, a warm meal, someone to say, “Hey, you’re not alone”?

LilyPads was born out of that question. Out of the memory of sleeping upright in a hospital chair. Out of the hope that no parent would ever again have to choose between being with their child and affording a place to sleep.

The name LilyPads comes from the way lily pads float in stillness, giving aquatic life a place to rest, above the water. That’s what we offer families: a soft place to land, full of love and care.

ROC-DC is building power with restaurant workers in DC to create a more just, dignified and equitable restaurant industry. 

**Background**

ROC-DC has been building power with restaurant workers since 2009. We are a small worker-led organization that utilizes base-building, organizing and worker-led advocacy to move our mission forward. We have a strong focus on community building and leadership development to strengthen our ability as a restaurant worker community to make the changes we want to see in our industry and in DC. ROC-DC is fully independent organization from ROC-United (circa June 2024).  

**Addressing the Current Moment**

ROC-DC has been specifically equipped to support workers during crises, and have provided systems of support, training and mutual aid during the threats of Trump's first presidency, during the COVID-19 pandemic and currently under the federal occupation of Washington, DC that is putting so many of our members and restaurant workers at risk. ROC-DC has not only been providing necessary mutual aid support to our members, but also building out systems where workers can support one another during this time. We have provided comprehensive resources to restaurant owners/management supported members with creating Emergency Family Plans and provided ongoing community  & healing spaces to share resources and stay in community during such a stressful and isolating time.

What is Mutual Aid?

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable
- Providing all kinds of support, ranging from food prep to childcare to translation to emotional support, and recognizing the value of all of them
- A political education opportunity, where we build the relationships and analysis to understand why we are in the conditions that we're in
- Preparation for the next disaster (natural or economic). Next time around we'll already have relationships with each other and know who is vulnerable and needs support
- A great jumping off point for other kinds of organizing and movement work

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.

Go Youth! Tanzania serves underprivileged kids near Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania by providing opportunities to play competitive soccer and improve oral English for success in school and life.  Go Youth! works with youth sports center Kilimanjaro Wonders (KWSC) in Moshi, Tanzania to provide a safe, supportive and structured environment for nearly 200 local boys and girls.  KWSC currently fields 4 boys' teams (U10, U13, U17 and U20) and one girls' team (ages 11-18).  KWSC's goal is to guide our players for success on the soccer field and in life.  Working with KWSC Executive Director Laurent, English Teacher Gabriel, and a committed group of adult volunteers, we provide top-level coaching, guidance and support for all of our kids! Since 2009, GiveDirectly has delivered more than $580 million in unconditional cash transfers to families in need. These one-time cash transfers allow recipients to invest in what they need most and have been shown to improve their earnings, children’s school attendance, health, nutrition, and mental well-being.
 
GiveDirectly uses government data to target villages where most or all residents are living in extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as earning under $2.15/day. In-country GiveDirectly staff enroll one member of each household in the entire village to receive a one-time transfer of about $1,000 USD sent in two installments using mobile money. Recipients can then withdraw the mobile funds as cash with local agents and use the funds to invest in what they need – whether it’s on starting a business, education, making their home safer/sturdier, healthcare, or livestock.

Supporting the Palisades rebuild, and building a model for all disaster communities


Team Palisades grew out of borrowed corners and improvised meeting rooms. In the weeks after the January 2025 fire, neighbors found each other on glitchy Zoom calls, over cups of coffee in local shops, and squeezed into borrowed spaces around town. Out of those small, determined encounters came a shared conviction: that recovery would be stronger if it was built by the community itself, with many voices and many hands at the table.

That spirit took root one Saturday in March, when a group of Palisades residents gathered at Team Molly’s space. World Central Kitchen served us a hot meal, and between bites we began sketching out what support could look like—block by block, family by family, and business by business. What started as conversation around folding tables has since grown into a living framework for rebuilding: block captains connecting neighbors, volunteers stepping forward with skills and time, and a widening circle of partners committed to our long-term recovery.

We’ve come far since those first tentative meetings, but our work is still just beginning. Team Palisades welcomes new energy, new ideas, and new neighbors every day. Whether you join as a volunteer, a partner, or simply as a voice in the conversation, you are part of writing the next chapter of our community. Autism Empowerment

City Relief exists to create connections for the hurting and homeless to resources and hope.

City Relief uses mobile resource centers to assist people dealing with poverty and homelessness. These outreaches happen eight times a week in different areas of New York City and New Jersey. We serve hot meals, provide hygiene kits and socks, help our guests to feel safe and comfortable, invite our guests into community with staff, volunteers and other guests, treat them with dignity and compassion, and provide an opportunity to speak to our trained staff who will connect them to life-changing resources and a community of care.

We exist thanks to private donations and for as little as $1.05, you can provide a meal for someone that would have to choose between eating and another necessity. Constantly expanding its network of partner organizations, the Center has recently become a member of the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage. Taube Jewish Heritage Tours Taube Jewish Heritage Tours is a mission-driven, on-the-ground Jewish heritage tour service based in Poland. Our professional team of academics, guides, educators, and community leaders provide meaningful and engaging customized tours of Poland's multicultural landscape, infusing each encounter with illuminating personal stories and insights from those engaged in Polish Jewish life and committed to the preservation of Polish Jewish heritage. TJHTalks Series Having suspended our flagship program, Taube Jewish Heritage Tours, we launched TJHTalks in April 2020 as an interactive way to maintain contact with past and future tour participants and to broaden the Center's audience. Yerusha: Professional Development Program The year-long program, now in its second year, distinguishes itself from other Jewish professional development opportunities in that the operative language is Polish and all workshop facilitators are based in Poland. For over 7 decades, DCCW has been aspiring to live up to its mission to “give children a childhood and a future” by helping under-privileged children in and around Delhi who face challenges they cannot overcome.  We achieve this through programs in the areas of health, nutrition, pre-school education, vocational training, supervised homework schemes, rehabilitation of special needs children and educational sponsorship.  One of our best-known programs is PALNA, our home for lost and abandoned children, where alongside we run a very successful adoption program. Today, these services reach out to 3000 children daily through our 15 centres and are provided to them virtually free of cost. 

DCCW runs  on donations from corporates, institutions and individuals. 



All our programs are targeted at children from low-income families.



-	PALNA: our home and adoption centre for abandoned, lost and homeless children (one centre; 70-80 children resident at any time) 

-	Palna WeeKids: prepares under-privileged pre-school children for admission into schools (13 centres; 900+  beneficiaries annually)

-	Educational Sponsorship: Provides financial assistance to school-going children ( ~900 beneficiaries annually)

-	Supervised Homework Scheme – helps school-going children with their schoolwork (14 centres; ~300 beneficiaries annually)

-	Vocational Training: Teaches income-generating skills (Computers, Tally, Beauty culture, Tailoring) to adolescent girls, mostly school-dropouts (13 centres ; ~1000 beneficiaries annually) 

-	Bal Chetna – provides day-care and rehabilitation therapies to special needs children to help them achieve their potential (Pre-pandemic 3 centres ~100 beneficiaries; only one centre re-started to date)



DCCW is being run by a professional and very dedicated team and an Executive Committee (governing board) of volunteer members. DCCW has received accreditation from Credibility Alliance, Give India, Benevity, CAF America, testifying integrity and transparency as a donation-supported NGO.

ALLFED aims to increase the resilience of the world's food systems to global catastrophic food shocks.

The mission of Alliance to Feed the Earth in Disasters (ALLFED) is to help build resilience to global catastrophic food system failure.

ALLFED seeks to provide practical, affordable, and resilient food solutions so that, in the event of a global catastrophe, governments, industry, and communities can respond quickly and distribute food equitably, saving lives and promoting the continuation of global cooperation.

However, ALLFED currently faces a major funding gap. **We have had to scale back our programs and, without new funding, will need to continue cutting half of our budget in 2026**. This will mean continuing to significantly scale down our programs, including our research output and the ability to support governments in preparing for global food system shocks.

We focus on events, such as large volcanic eruptions, pandemics, and cyberattacks, which could deplete 5% or more of global calorie output, or access to those calories. In such events, the loss of food would likely kill far more people than the catastrophe itself directly.

Zendo Project: Peer Support and Compassionate Care

Friends of Hope (HOPE) is a nonprofit whose mission is to build a nation where every Filipino can achieve their full potential.

HOPE targets the most vulnerable populations to create systemic change in three main service areas, specifically **Education**, **Agriculture/Livelihood**, and **Environment**.

**Education** - HOPE invests in education infrastructure to help turn the tide for millions of Filipino children that rely on public schools to secure their futures. We work with the Philippines' Department of Education and underserved communities across the Philippines to build bright and beautiful public school classrooms for young learners, no matter how remotely located they are. To date, HOPE has constructed 130 classrooms and counting since 2012.

**Agriculture/Livelihood** - HOPE supports some of the most marginalized members of the country – smallholder coconut farmers. We carry out interventions to enrich their livelihoods such as seedling distribution, technical support provision, and building linkages to markets and micro-entrepreneurship opportunities. To date, HOPE’s agriculture programs have enriched the livelihoods of nearly 30,000 farmers and their families through the replanting and distribution of close to 2 million trees.

**Environment** - HOPE implements the Aling Tindera (or women micro-entrepreneurs) program, a market-based solution against the plastic pollution crisis. We engage women micro-entrepreneurs and informal workers to manage collection points, where members of the community can sell their plastic waste. This mechanism provides incremental income to the women, encourages behavior change among households, and helps clean up the environment. Currently, there are over 140+ Aling Tindera sites all over the country, helping address plastic waste management issues in their communities.

Our efforts with our partners are increasingly visible in the country, positioning us as champions for responsible business and social justice. For this, we have received recognitions such as the Grand Prize for Developmental Social Enterprise awarded by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Best New Brand and Best CSR awarded by the Global Bottled Water Awards. We have also gained credibility as an institution for collective impact through our partnerships with organizations like USAID, GIZ, Vita Coco, Gcash, and Century Pacific Food Inc.

SORBA Orlando is the Orlando/Central Florida chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association.

Founded in 2013, SORBA Orlando has grown to include eight distinct and fun trails in and around Orlando and its suburbs, with more trail miles on the way!  SORBA Orlando trails offer everything from family-friendly places to ride, endurance bike races and time trials, skills-building sections, and opportunities to give back to the community.

By partnering with the community SORBA Orlando builds and maintains our local trails. Your support goes directly to materials, workday essentials, and training needed to keep the area rolling in a fun, sustainable and safe environment.

The cultivation, use, and trade of psychoactive substances — including psychedelics — has been a consistent aspect of human history, but prohibition, criminalization, and militarization — and their inherent oppression — have led to drastic consequences. The ongoing, global War on Drugs has been justified by bad science, racism, and fear for too long: it has led to mass incarceration; erosion of civil liberties; ecological damage; economic waste; and the public health polycrisis of adulteration, poisoning, and overdose. Many of these harmful effects have disproportionately impacted the most historically exploited and oppressed communities. Consequently, we believe societies worldwide have an obligation to account for and repair those harms, to the extent possible.
