My ancestors were from several locations in historical Poland.  We visited Warsaw, Krakow and our ancestral villages in 2019.  The experience was remarkably moving and the support we found from the local communities made the experience all the richer.  Thank you for continuing to do the important work that you do.

We also assist with housing, and keeping folks connected to service providers by supplying telephones and monthly service. 

The majority of folks we serve were born where they now live in tents, and once had property ownership in their families here in the bay area, but no longer do. Most are seniors, and many of them are now sick and/or disabled.

Coalition For Safe Spaces In Lebanon is focused on international issues. It received its nonprofit status in 2018. 

We foster a stabilizing presence that expands the safety, health, dreams, and possibilities of those impacted by crisis by being on the ground, listening deeply, advocating for those impacted, and connecting people and resources.

In February of 2017, a group of friends and colleagues traveled to Lebanon with one goal: to listen. They came with hearts heavy for those affected by the ongoing effects of war, particularly the nearly two million refugees who now made Lebanon their home. For a country about the size of Connecticut, Lebanon ranks first in the number of refugees per capita in the world. Their four million residents have continually made space for families forced out of Palestine, and orphans and widows fleeing Syria. (In contrast, the U.S., which is 946 times larger than Lebanon, hosts 3 million refugees, which is .009% of our population.) Within days of their first visit, this group of friends understood why: there are few forces stronger in the world than Lebanese hospitality.

While the power of Lebanese hospitality explains the why, the how is much more complicated. How can Lebanon care for the continually growing population of
neighbors who call their small country home? How can refugees best find a path toward sustained independence? And how can the global community support
Lebanon in their inspiring and generous act of welcome to these refugees? After this listening tour, the group of friends who would become Safe Spaces knew
two things: they were inspired to provide tangible support to these refugee families, and they wanted to do everything they could to come alongside the Lebanese people to help.

 

Soon, it became obvious that the most impactful need was education for refugee children. Thirty to fifty percent of school-age Syrian children are not enrolled in any formal education. As they get older, many more have to drop out of school to work and support their families. Students who do attend school face language barriers and a significant gap in skills. It’s in this gap that the Safe Spaces Center and school was born. You can learn more about our Safe Spaces Center here.

In all that we do, we rely on our relationships in these impacted communities to guide us into meaningful work. Because we are a small NGO, we have the flexibility to meet needs in moments of crisis. When Beirut experienced a debilitating explosion at their port in August of 2020, we quickly dispatched our staff and teachers to help in relief efforts. In the days and months following, we partnered to rebuild a church and help establish ongoing support for a community kitchen. You can read more about our work in Beirut here. Since that first trip, Safe Spaces has indeed become a trusted stabilizing presence in Lebanon. We feel that our power lies in the same roots that inspired us: in radical hospitality, genuine welcome, and a deep desire for all humans to flourish. For us, it always comes back to listening.

Protecting children's brain development through salt iodization


Entering pregnancy with adequate iodine in the diet protects children's brain development and helps them to grow and learn better. The small amounts of iodine needed can be obtained by using iodized salt in cooking or in food products. It costs just 5 cents a year for a lifetime of protection.

Despite not being directly related to schools, removing this barrier to healthy development is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to support children's educational outcomes. 

IGN is only organization with a sole objective to protect the world from iodine deficiency.  The problem has never fully disappeared, and changing dietary patterns are causing deficiency to re-emerge, even in some of the world’s wealthiest countries.  

Without our work, the global progress achieved over the past few decades could disappear*.*  It would be a major loss to humanity to see this progress slip away when we know how to prevent it. It may be a humble intervention, requiring relatively small amounts of funding, but its impact is enormous.  Thanks to all of you for your past and future support for our work.

There are around 30,000 women in Ethiopia living with devastating childbirth injuries called obstetric fistula, because they don't know help is available. An estimated 1,000 women suffer a new fistula injury every year. Catherine’s trailblazing **Hamlin Model of Care** - today replicated around the world - finds, treats and holistically heals these women, restoring their lives.

Women living with childbirth injuries suffer great trauma. Following obstructed labour, they are left incontinent and usually lose their baby. They are shunned from their community and live hidden not knowing help available.

In a single year, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia treats more than 6,000 patients and perform more than 2,000 surgeries.

We also provide counseling and a range of vocational training to support nearly 1,000 women in their recovery. A woman's healing journey starts the moment she arrives at a Hamlin fistula hospital. She is given a Comfort Package containing a Hamlin blanket that has been lovingly made by a volunteer, hygiene items, a new nightgown and slippers, and a homecoming dress.

These are utter luxuries for the many women who arrive at a Hamlin hospital without shoes, wearing the only stained clothes they own. When they wrap themselves in their Hamlin blanket, they feel the warm embrace of people like you.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia's work is centered in Ethiopia, a country with one of the highest fertility and maternal mortality rates in the world. Our vision is simple: To eradicate obstetric fistula. Forever.

For more than six decades, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has implemented our world-recognized approach to the holistic treatment of women and girls with obstetric fistulas — severe injuries resulting from prolonged, unrelieved and obstructed labor, typically in the absence of skilled birth attendants.

In 93% of cases, the mother suffers not only dramatic tissue damage, but she also loses her new baby. Nerve damage and weakened pelvic muscles make many daily tasks unmanageable. And, women are also often ostracized from their communities – cut off from avenues to leading a full, healthy and happy life.

The Hamlin Model of Care – The World's Leading Approach to Treating Obstetric Fistula

Dr Catherine Hamlin pioneered an approach to treating obstetric fistula, including developing a new surgical technique, that dramatically changes the lives of women and girls — in some cases in no more than an hour.

The Hamlin Model of Care is unique because it is not just about repairing injury, but restoring dignity. Hamlin's Rehabilitation and Reintegration Program at Desta Mender offers counseling, literacy and numeracy classes. Additional programs for vocational and life skills training help women find sustainable employment or establish their own small businesses. Today, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is staffed by more than 550 Ethiopian medical professionals and five regional hospitals have been established to respond to the significant demand for fistula surgery.

To accelerate change for women in Ethiopia, our Project Zero teams will go from door-to-door, in every Woreda (district) to identify women living with historic fistula cases and organize care and treatment. At the same time, we will strengthen maternal healthcare services, to reduce the incidence of birth injuries, and increase awareness, so women have the tools and knowledge they need to give birth safely. Lasting change for women and girls requires building a workforce of skilled birth attendants. Through our Hamlin College of Midwives, we recruit women from rural communities in Ethiopia to learn the Hamlin Model of Care during a four-year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program.  The curriculum is fully certified and includes the precondition that students conduct at least 40 deliveries before they graduate. Upon graduation, Hamlin midwives return to their villages – today staffing over 90 rural midwifery clinics in remote areas.

Faces Up Uganda (Faces Up) is a youth-led, community-based not-for-profit that serves young people (6-25 years), in and out of school, refugees, juveniles, and those with disabilities. Our current focus areas include Wakiso and Kampala districts, plus Nakivaale refugee settlement, in Isingiro district.

We serve young people like Mark. In 2019, Mark joined our program. His initial drawings were dark scenes of violence, death, and despair. We later learned he was a refugee from South Sudan, carrying trauma he couldn’t express in words. So we gave him what he needed: space, pencils, and presence. Over time, his drawings transformed from guns to flowers, from fire to birds in flight. His smile returned, his confidence grew, and his performance at school improved. Mark’s journey showed us that art is more than expression; it’s healing. 

That’s why our team is on a mission to extend arts education to all young people like Mark.

What is Mutual Aid?

**Mutual aid is “cooperation for the sake of the common good.” It’s getting people to come together to meet each other’s needs, recognizing that as humans, our survival is dependent on one another.**

Mutual Aid is a practice and politics that emphasizes solidarity rather than charity. It means we recognize that our well-being, health and dignity are all bound up in each other. It means that we understand our survival depends on cooperation, not competition. In this particular moment, we see that our health is also dependent on other people’s health, and we can literally save each other’s lives. Rather than disengage and feel powerless, mutual aid allows us to plug in where we can make the most impact — locally.

Mutual aid IS...

- Getting people together in your community to provide material support to each other
- Building relationships with your neighbors based on trust and common interest
- Making decisions by consensus rather than relying on authority and hierarchy
- Sharing things rather than hoarding things
- Treating no one as disposable
- Providing all kinds of support, ranging from food prep to childcare to translation to emotional support, and recognizing the value of all of them
- A political education opportunity, where we build the relationships and analysis to understand why we are in the conditions that we're in
- Preparation for the next disaster (natural or economic). Next time around we'll already have relationships with each other and know who is vulnerable and needs support
- A great jumping off point for other kinds of organizing and movement work

Mutual aid IS NOT...

- Quid pro quo transactions
- Only for disasters or crises
- Charity or a way to "save" people
- A reason for a social safety net not to exist

DC Mutual Aid Network

The DC Mutual Aid Network (DCMA) is a grassroots community-led effort looking to take care of each other and keep our city as safe as possible.

- DCMA is a decentralized, community-led effort, so there is no single group that runs the network.
- There are autonomous groups for Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Wards 7 & 8 are served together by one group.
- The DCMA Network is governed by the ward groups on topics of social media, website, fundraising, etc. The groups also share resources, best practices and offer referrals to other groups.

Ward 2 Efforts

Ward 2 Mutual Aid is part of the larger DCMA Network. Our concrete activities are:

- **Hotline** - Volunteers staff our warmline, where Ward 2 residents can call and request assistance.
- **Groceries** - We provide a grocery bag delivery to ~150 families that request it through our hotline or building captains. The bags include fresh produce, protein, dry goods, and requested household items.
- **Encampment Outreach** - We organize a supply drop to ~120 unhoused neighbors.
- **Building captains** - We organize with local residents to utilize their leadership and relational networks. Building captains check on neighbors, relay needs, and assist with food donations and distribution.
- **Back to school** - We organize with local parents to host a book and clothing swap.
- **Support for high risk/immuno-compromised individuals** - We have been partnering with local public housing buildings to drop off cleaning supplies, masks, and groceries.

Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC) was founded in 2014 to provide much needed, high quality, specialized and affordable therapy and rehabilitation to children with disabilities and their families and carers in western Uganda in order to enable them to lead more independent lives.  The Inclusive Education Hub provides professional development for teachers in Inclusive, child-led teaching practices and the Mobility workshop designs, develops and manufactures wheelchairs using locally available materials, suitable for the local terrain.

In addition to this, KCDC acts as a platform for education and support in the field of disability, offering training as well as guidance on best-practice methods to both individuals and healthcare professionals as well as communities and other institutions requiring assistance.
