Libya Floods Emergency Response

INTERSOS is scaling up its emergency response to support the population affected by Storm Daniel in Derna and other communities in East Libya.

Our intervention focuses on distributing essential kits of non-food items (including hygiene kits, and dignity kits) and providing post-trauma psychological support and training.

On September 10th, the extraordinary rainfall caused several flash floods, including the collapse of two dams close to the city of Derna, where thousands of people were literally swept away by the water. At the moment, the estimates of the victims vary from 3,000 to higher figures. According to OCHA, approximately 884,000 people in five provinces (Mantikas) live in areas directly affected by the storm and flash floods in Libya and have been impacted to varying degrees.

INTERSOS has been in Libya since 2018. In the East, INTERSOS is currently operating in Benghazi, the capital of Cyrenaica, and in Ajdabiya.
