That being said, it can be difficult to know which organizations to donate to. That’s why I’m donating to the Climate Change Fund by Founders Pledge. They do incredible research on the efficacy of different climate change organizations, so I can trust that my gift will go to the best methods of tackling the issue. 


I've been really impressed by GiveDirectly's pioneering and research-driven approach to using direct cash transfers to help people climb out of poverty. They've helped show that just giving money to people so they can make their own decisions about what they need is not only empowering but also one of the most potent forms of aid. The Human Rights Defense Center advocates for prisoner phone rights. In 2019, prisoners and their families in Utah paid $1.2M+ for phone calls. 78.2% of these payments ($1M+) were kickbacks paid to the Utah DOC. A 2019, same state, prison phone call in Utah on average costs $11.4/hour which is higher than Utah’s minimum wage today ($7.25/hour). Utah is one of many other states with similiar statistics. A prisoner’s ability to make contact with their friends and family has a direct correlation with the success of their rehabilitation. It is important protect prisoners and their families from this unjust financial burden.

The Ella Baker Center is a local (Oakland, CA) organization that co-sponsors policy which "promotes dignity and provides opportunity for communities that have historically been left out of policy considerations". Policy reform is a key piece in fighting systemic racism.

The Founders Pledge Climate Fund exists to leverage each dollar and fund the most effective, neglected climate solutions.

Climate change is an incredibly complex problem borne out of how we produce and consume energy; it's intertwined with challenges of economic development, energy poverty, and emissions-fueled air pollution. It is an environmental and humanitarian crisis we must urgently address.

We aim to take a holistic approach that recognizes the global nature of this challenge and the fact that, despite its urgency, we are still in the early days of climate action. We address the worst-case scenarios of climate damage, and look for solutions that can reduce current carbon emissions and accelerate the transition to clean energy to meet global demand, especially in developing countries. Through the Fund, we:

- Accelerate innovation in neglected technologies
- Catalytically grow the most effective climate organizations
- Promote policy leadership and paradigm shaping

### Our Approach to Grantmaking
When evaluating potential grants, we consider several key points:

- **Counterfactual impact.** Our grants are designed to create a meaningful outcome that would not otherwise have happened. This means that you can rely on the Funds to create meaningful, real change, rather than just maintaining the status quo.
- **Impact-driven philanthropy.** This fund prioritizes the highest-impact solutions to challenges. We assess where the gaps are, which opportunities may be neglected by other funders, and where the biggest wins are in terms of making the biggest difference.
- **The organization’s funding gap.** Not all organizations are set up to scale up their programming and many can’t productively absorb large amounts of unsolicited funding. We evaluate all potential grantees’ capacity for growth and consider how much money they could put to good use.
- **Organizational strength.** Particularly with unrestricted funding, it’s important to have trust in the leadership and capacity of the organizations we support. We look at their track record of success and their transparency about failures as well as successes, and we only support those organizations which are exceptionally well run.
- **Time-critical opportunities and funding certainty.** While Founders Pledge members give to our top climate charities regularly, sometimes there are time-critical opportunities which require fast decisions. We will use the Fund to make grants that enable such short-term opportunities and stability for high-impact funding opportunities thereby increasing the impact compared to individual giving to specific organizations.
- **Portfolio approach.** Because most climate damage comes from particular severe outcomes – with a world of 4 degrees of warming being much worse than twice as bad as a world with 2 degrees – and because every particular strategy – such as energy innovation – might underdeliver, we pursue a portfolio approach to maximize positive impact. This means we will diversify our bets in ways that, when one approach fails (such as energy innovation), the others we promote (such as carbon removal) can be expected to be particularly important and still available.

### Frequently-Asked Questions

**Can charities apply for money from the Fund?**
The Funds do not generally accept applications from charities, and we request that charities do not send unsolicited applications for funding. If the Fund Managers choose to open up an application round, this will be publicized.

**How frequently will you make grants from the Fund?**
In general, Fund Managers will review grantmaking decisions on a quarterly basis. Decisions will be made based on the value of Funds and the available options for high-impact grantmaking. We may disburse funds outside of quarterly review dates if we become aware of a particularly promising and time-sensitive funding.

**How will my contribution be used?**
All funds are granted out. The Fund is not an investment vehicle. The Fund does not use any percentage of contributions to cover staff time or other overhead costs. Every dollar contributed to the Fund will be used to make grants directly to end-user organizations creating a real difference.

Founders Pledge: Climate Fund

Delivering unconditional cash directly to the world's poorest households via secure mobile transfers. 

Since 2009, GiveDirectly has delivered more than $580 million in unconditional cash transfers to families in need. These one-time cash transfers allow recipients to invest in what they need most and have been shown to improve their earnings, children’s school attendance, health, nutrition, and mental well-being.
 
GiveDirectly uses government data to target villages where most or all residents are living in extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as earning under $2.15/day. In-country GiveDirectly staff enroll one member of each household in the entire village to receive a one-time transfer of about $1,000 USD sent in two installments using mobile money. Recipients can then withdraw the mobile funds as cash with local agents and use the funds to invest in what they need – whether it’s on starting a business, education, making their home safer/sturdier, healthcare, or livestock.
 
GiveDirectly uses rigorous experimental research (randomized controlled trials) to measure the impact of their unconditional cash programs and answer public policy questions, generating evidence on key design and implementation questions across varied contexts. Advocates on behalf of the human rights of people held in U.S. detention facilities.

The Human Rights Defense Center (HRDC) was originally founded in 1990 in Washington state as Prisoners' Legal News (later Prison Legal News). The initial purpose of the organization was to publish a monthly newsletter of the same name to give a voice to prisoners, their families and others affected by criminal justice policies in Washington. By 1993 the newsletter had grown into a magazine with nationwide news coverage and circulation.

In 1996 the organization received a small grant from the Southern Poverty Law Center which enabled HRDC to hire its first full-time employee. The following year, with the publication of The Celling of America: An Inside Look at the U.S. Prison Industry, an anthology of articles published in Prison Legal News (PLN), HRDC began distributing books that critique the criminal justice system as well as self-help and reference books of interest to prisoners. Two other anthologies of PLN articles have since been published, Prison Nation (2002) and Prison Profiteers (2007). HRDC has also published a number of its own books, including The Prisoners' Guerrilla Handbook to Correspondence Programs in the United States and Canada (3rd edition 2009), the Prison Education Guide (2016), The Habeas Citebook: Ineffective Assistance of Counsel (1st edition 2010, 2nd edition 2016) and the Disciplinary Self-Help Litigation Manual (2015). 

HRDC currently distributes around 50 different criminal justice, legal and self-help titles, and continues to publish Prison Legal News, which has become a 72-page monthly publication with subscribers in all 50 states and internationally. We also publish Criminal Legal News, which reports on criminal case law and news related to prosecutors, policing and sentencing. In addition to publishing, HRDC engages in prisoner rights litigation; we have a robust litigation project that has filed suit against prison and jail officials nationwide. 

We also coordinate several special projects, including the national Campaign for Prison Phone Justice, which seeks to reduce the cost of phone calls made by prisoners to stay in contact with their families, friends and loved ones. We co-founded the campaign in 2011, and maintain the campaign website on the Nation Inside platform, www.phonejustice.org, as well as a related data site, www.prisonphonejustice.org.

Additionally, HRDC founded the Stop Prison Profiteering campaign (www.stopprisonprofiteering.org), which targets the financial exploitation of prisoners and their families through fee-based video visitation, debit release cards and money transfer fees, among other services.

HRDC's Prison Ecology Project (www.prisonecology.org) examines the intersection between criminal justice and environmental justice, including the impact of detention facilities on the environment (such as sewage spills into local waterways from prisons and jails), and the impact of the environment on prisoners and prison staff (such as facilities built on landfills or former coal mines, or that have water supplies contaminated by arsenic, or are located in flood zones or near Superfund cleanup sites).

From the modest beginnings of a prison-based newsletter with a $50 budget and an all-volunteer grassroots base, HRDC has grown into a national 501(c)(3) organization with 18 employees, including four staff attorneys. HRDC is headquartered in Lake Worth, Florida and has offices in Seattle, Washington; Nashville, Tennessee; and Washington, D.C.

EBC builds power with systems-impacted people to drive systems-change. Over its 27-year history, the families and communities EBC organizes with have collectively transformed the criminal justice system in California, from closing  abusive youth prisons to passing first-of-its-kind legislation to challenge racial discrimination in trials and sentencing. Building on the organizing approach of civil rights leader Ella Baker, EBC invests in the leadership of the people most impacted by racial oppression. EBC is led by systems-impacted people and implements solutions created from lived expertise. Recent California victories like the Racial Justice Act for All, the RISE Act, and the Access to Programming Act were pioneered at EBC and are poised to bring thousands home to their families. EBC also invests in leadership in its core base. For example, currently incarcerated people are most impacted – but least included – in policies for decarceration. Through EBC’s 9,000+ inside member network, currently incarcerated people weigh in on policy solutions, organize with their peers, speak out on issues impacting their lives, and get support to advocate for their freedom. Locally, in the Bay Area, EBC builds credible alternatives to prisons. Restore Oakland, EBC’s community center, models investments that return opportunity to over-criminalized neighborhoods. Here, EBC and partners offer resources like restorative justice circles, re-entry support, tenants rights tools, job training, and entrepreneurship funding that build a vibrant, prosperous community. Organizing for safety, power, freedom, and opportunity, EBC advances the self-determination of the people most impacted by the criminal justice system.

Reshape America's pretrial system. 100% of online donations are used to post bail and bring people home.

Fight mass incarceration by paying bail for Americans and offering needed support. We believe that paying bail for someone in need is an act of resistance against a system that criminalizes race and poverty and an act of solidarity with local communities and movements for decarceration. Over the next five years, The Bail Project will open dozens sites in high-need jurisdictions with the goal of paying bail for tens of thousands of low-income Americans, all while collecting stories and data that prove money bail is not necessary to ensure people return to court. We won’t stop until meaningful change is achieved and the presumption of innocence is no longer for sale.

The Amazon is home to more than 511 distinct Indigenous peoples.
