We are Iranian activists, dissidents and former political prisoners. We empower Iranians and champion freedom in Iran. 

United for Iran is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization started in 2009 and operated by Iranian activists, dissidents, and former political prisoners. 

As a feminist organization, we have an intersectional point of view, challenge discrimination in all its forms, and are part of a movement that believes that coexistence is possible and democracy is necessary in Iran. 

In our day to day work, we enable and accelerate grassroots movements in Iran, we expose human rights violations in the Iranian judicial system, and we develop subversive tools that weaken the regime’s hold on Iranians’ freedoms.

Since 2009, we have helped launch over two dozen subversive mobile apps like Gershad, Nahoft and Hamdam, which have been downloaded over 900,000 times, giving Iranians tools to expand their civil, political and economic freedoms under the brutal regime. 

We are a watchdog for Iranians political prisoners. Since 2011, as part of Iran Prison Atlas, we have been monitoring every arrest, every abuse of power and instance of torture in order to save lives as well as document abuses for the future, when justice will be served. 

Our app Gershad launched in 2016 allows users to report and detour the Morality Police   and now security forces.

We support protestors in the streets and underground activist movements in Iran through our Safe Activism project, where we teach activists how to reduce the serious risks related to activism in Iran  and to protect themselves in case of arrest, interrogation and incarceration.

Because we work outside of Iran’s borders—in Iraq, Turkey, Germany, Spain, Canada and the United States—we are able to agitate, advocate and organize without fearing for our lives. That is a freedom we never take for granted and one we proudly leverage on behalf of our allies inside Iran who risk their lives every time they speak up.

Ultimately, we want to see an Iran that is vibrant, open and democratic. A country where all Iranians, especially women, minorities and other oppressed groups, can enjoy full political freedoms and civil liberties. Where everyone is equal before the law and treated with dignity and respect.

We will automate and expand eligibility for record clearance across the country, impacting millions of people.

The Clean Slate Initiative works to expand and automate the sealing of arrest and conviction records after people have completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time - believing everyone should have a shot at redemption.   

We are a national, bipartisan non-profit organization that builds advocacy campaigns where local, state, and national partners operate with the shared goal of passing Clean Slate laws in states and in Congress.

Through partnerships, collaboration, and coordinated advocacy campaigns, the Clean Slate Initiative unites businesses, advocates, community members, and impacted people across the country.

We support state-based campaigns with the goal of passing laws that ensure conviction and non-conviction records are automatically sealed once someone has completed their sentence and remained crime-free for a period of time. 

The Clean Slate Initiative supports campaigns that have clear goals, well-thought-out strategies, and a vision for building a base of support that can defend and sustain policy wins.

Since this initiative’s inception, we have helped pass legislation that provides a path for: 

- 2.3 million people to have at least one conviction or non-conviction cleared;

- 7.3 million conviction and non-conviction cases to be cleared; and

- 2 million people to receive full record clearance.

You may wonder - why is there a need for Clean Slate Initiatives? Here are the facts: 

1 in 3 adults in the United States have an arrest or conviction record that limits their ability to work, obtain housing, and engage in civic life. Having a record, even an arrest record, is a significant barrier to economic mobility. 

- 9 in 10 employers use background checks when hiring.

- 4 in 5 landlords use background checks on prospective tenants.

- 3 in 5 colleges and universities use background checks on prospective students.

There are more than 44,000 collateral consequences that limit the ability of people with a record to access meaningful opportunities to build a better life. Our work focuses on automating the process to remove those barriers, providing a real second chance for the millions who are currently impacted by an arrest or conviction record.
