The Climate Solutions Accelerator’s mission is to build a healthier, more equitable, and environmentally sustainable community by catalyzing local efforts to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and address the impacts of climate change.

Given the urgency and complexity of climate change, the Accelerator firmly believes that everyone has a role to play in addressing climate change. The Accelerator’s constituents, therefore, include any person or organization in the nine-county Genesee-Finger Lakes Region who is willing to work toward solving climate change, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and language. Furthermore, we are committed to centering equity in our work and prioritize climate solutions that accelerate emissions reductions while also addressing other key community concerns (e.g., health disparities, access to jobs, affordable housing). We are firmly committed to ensuring that ALL members of our community have opportunities to benefit from, and participate in, climate action at the local level. Building a powerfully diverse climate movement across the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region that bridges political, economic, geographic, and racial divides is therefore a critical goal of our work. 

One of the Accelerator’s primary roles in the community is to facilitate collaboration between entities that are working to address climate change and related concerns. By coordinating and aligning the efforts of many local organizations, the Accelerator increases the effectiveness and efficiency of our regional climate movement by bringing together cross-sector stakeholders to work toward equitable, intersectional climate solutions.

A Collective Impact Initiative brings together a wide and diverse group of stakeholders to tackle an urgent, yet complex problem (like climate change) that cannot be solved with a single solution or from within a single organization or sector, e.g., non-profit or government. The Accelerator has convened a steering committee for this initiative, made up of key decision-makers from a wide range of sectors, including government, business, health, housing, transportation, and agriculture. This steering committee is working with consultants from the Stockholm Environment Institute to develop a climate action plan for the nine-county Genesee Finger Lakes region, and a shared measurement system to assess progress toward achieving the plan’s goals. The Collective Impact steering committee and issue-based working groups will coordinate mutually reinforcing activities to reduce redundancies, break down silos, and maximize the efficient use of resources.

The Collective Impact process will allow our region to move quickly towards carbon neutrality, through coordinated, collaborative action to end our dependence on fossil fuels.​​These efforts to implement systems-level climate solutions will enhance the quality of life for our region’s residents in a variety of ways, such as improved public health, energy affordability, opportunities for green job development, sustainable transportation options, access to public greenspace, neighborhood stability/resilience, and home comfort.

Beyond the Accelerator’s primary collective impact initiative, other current programs include:

- Amped: a collaboration with nearly 20 prominent local institutions to promote beneficial electrification (the use of cleanly-generated electricity to meet energy needs) and encourage organizational leaders to electrify their buildings and vehicle fleets.

- Color Your Community Green: a volunteer-driven initiative that connects and organizes concerned individuals, by municipality or neighborhood, to form a network of climate-focused citizen action teams that (1) identify locally-relevant, high-impact climate solutions and develop implementation strategies using the CYCG “Toolkit,” and (2) advocate for environmental justice and equitable climate solutions to be implemented at the municipal level and in schools.

- HeatSmart Monroe: an initiative that educates, encourages, and incentivizes homeowners to transition from gas and oil heating systems to cleaner, greener heat pump heating and cooling systems.

- Connected Communities Resident Ambassador Program: outreach and education initiative in partnership with Connected Communities to help tenants, landlords and homeowners in the City of Rochester’s EMMA and Beechwood neighborhoods reduce their energy usage—and energy bills—by making weatherization improvements using NY State home energy efficiency grants.

We co-founded TerraPraxis to design and implement strategies that leverage science, technology and energy innovation for a prosperous planet. Our mission is to innovate and accelerate scalable, equitable solutions for unsolved areas of the climate challenge. 

Our special focus is on enabling high-impact rapid transitions for neglected parts of the decarbonization challenge. 

We work with an extensive global network to define, incubate and initiate scalable strategies that fulfil the twin missions of prosperity and decarbonization.

The National Network of Abortion Funds is a network of orgs that are funding abortion and building power to fight for cultural & political change.

The National Network of Abortion Funds builds power with members to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic, and reproductive justice.

The Afiya Center works to Transform the lives, health, and overall wellbeing of Black womxn and girls.

The Afiya Center is a woman-centered organization that addresses the unique needs of Black womxn and transgender/gender non-conforming people (TGNC) through public health education, policy advocacy, and leadership development. We unapologetically advocate in the areas of HIV, maternal morality, abortion access and the decriminalization of Black bodies. Using a reproductive justice framework, we work to dismantle harmful policies and systems that directly impact the lives of Black womxn and girls.

The Afiya Center

Evidence Action scales evidence-based and cost-effective programs to reduce the burden of poverty. 

Our organization was founded in 2013 to address a big gap in the fight against global poverty--many of the most promising interventions are either implemented at a very small scale, or not at all. We set out to address this gap by building programs that would scale evidence-based and cost-effective interventions, leading to significant improvements in quality of life for hundreds of millions of people. 

Our model worked. In less than a decade, our two flagship programs, the Deworm the World Initiative and Dispensers for Safe Water, have grown to measurably impact over 280 million people each year. This success is achieved through the dedication and talent of our staff, the hard work of our partners, and the commitment of our supporters.

By 2024, we seek to double our impact. We are strengthening and expanding our existing programs, and working to identify a new generation of evidence-based and cost-effective interventions that we can scale to reach millions more. 

We currently operate three programs:

Dispensers for Safe Water 

Dispensers for Safe Water program delivers free and reliable access to safe water for 4 million people in rural Kenya, Uganda, and Malawi.
In rural parts of low-income countries, most water sources are untreated, meaning that water is not safe to drink directly from the source. Our uniquely-engineered chlorine dispensers are installed next to commonly-used water sources, enabling people to treat their water using a safe and pre-measured dose of chlorine. The chlorine stays active for 2-3 days, ensuring water doesn’t get recontaminated even when stored at home. Adding diluted chlorine to water is a WHO-endorsed approach to improving water quality. 
Dispensers for Safe Water is a cost-effective solution - just over $1.00 delivers safe water access to one person for an entire year. In 2019, our program averted over 380,000 cases of diarrhea among children, one of the main causes of childhood mortality in the countries where we operate.

Deworm the World Initiative

Deworm the World Initiative helps governments launch, scale, and sustain school-based deworming programs.

Over 868 million children globally are at risk of contracting parasitic worm infections. If left untreated, infections can lead to anemia, malnourishment, and impaired mental and physical development—ultimately affecting children’s educational outcomes and income as adults.Our program brings free treatment to children at their schools instead of placing the burden on the families to obtain it. We partner with governments to regularly treat all at-risk children in places where at least 20% are infected with worms, as recommended by the World Health Organization.  

Rigorous research shows that deworming leads to significant improvements to children’s health, education, and long-term wellbeing. In 2019, we helped governments treat over 280 million children in India, Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Pakistan for less than US 50 cents per treatment.

Evidence Action Accelerator is our engine for new program development that selects, optimizes, and scales interventions with the highest potential to measurably improve the lives of millions of people in the world’s poorest places.  

Each intervention considered by the Accelerator must undergo a multi-stage process of program development, taking it from an evidence-based concept to a fully-developed solution that can be replicated in multiple geographies. We look for three critical aspects during the assessment process: rigorous evidence, cost-effectiveness, and potential for scale. 

We are currently accelerating two promising health solutions: working with the Liberian government to detect and treat maternal syphilis, with the aim of preventing thousands of child deaths and disabilities each year; and supporting the Indian government to improve the distribution of iron and folic acid supplementation to millions of children and adolescents —treating iron deficiency anemia, one of the main causes of disability in the country.

A hot plate of food when it’s needed most. For people fighting or fleeing disasters, we are here. 

Ten years ago, my wife Patricia and I had a big dream to start World Central Kitchen. We envisioned an organization that would create smart solutions to hunger and poverty, and for many years we saw an amazing impact through our clean cookstoves initiative, culinary training programs, and social enterprise ventures that empower communities and strengthen economies. But we had no idea we would one day be answering the call in Puerto Rico and around the world – “Food First Responders” serving millions of meals each year. In the process, we learned that a small NGO can change the world through the power of food.

Last year, WCK activated in response to dozens of disasters — some of them natural, and some man-made. From serving children in the shelters on our border with Mexico to making deliveries by lamplight to those keeping watch over beaches in Indonesia, our fight to feed the hungry has taken us to more places than we ever expected.

At the same time, WCK continues planting roots in the communities where we work. Our Plow to Plate program is helping to create food resiliency in the face of future disasters. In Haiti, aspiring chefs are obtaining the skills and confidence they need to elevate their careers and the country’s tourism sector.

With your help, we have shown that there is no place too far or disaster too great for our chefs to be there with a hot plate of food when it’s needed most.

We are devoted to abolishing immigration detention, while ending the isolation of people currently suffering in this system.

Freedom for Immigrants is a national nonprofit devoted to abolishing immigration detention through two main strategies, while ending the isolation of people currently suffering in this profit¬-driven system. First, we mobilize a network of 4,500 watchdog community members that uncovers and tracks abuses experienced by those in immigration detention, shedding light in a consistent manner for the first time on this hidden system. Second, we are modeling a community-based alternative to detention that welcomes immigrants into the social fabric of the United States. Through these windows into the system, we gather data and stories to combat injustice at the individual level and push systemic change.

It is more important than ever to do all we can to support the mental health of our youth. The impact of the pandemic on the mental health of our young people has led to a very serious public health crisis. As our youth are struggling with unprecedented uncertainty and isolation, their parents have had to become mental health counselors, as well as teachers and caregivers. Studies are already showing that the rates of adverse mental health conditions are on the rise, particularly among young adults and caregivers. 

When people are as aware of their mental health as their physical health, that knowledge translates into more caring communities overall, and empowers individuals in the community to look out for each other by being able to provide community and regional resources, as well as valuable peer support. Our educational programs increase awareness and empathy within communities. Studies also show that emotional connection and support improves mental health and increases resiliency. The Parent Support Network provides parents with the support they need to improve outcomes in their own communities.

We educate, empower, and support families and communities by offering a broad spectrum of educational and supportive programs and events, such as film screenings, speakerships, workshops, and peer support groups. We have spoken to thousands of high school students, parents, teachers, and professionals at over 100 community events, schools, and conferences nationwide. The Youth Mental Health Project has and continues to develop strong partnerships with community organizations that are eager to bring our programs and tools to their communities. In the past year and a half since its launch, The Parent Support Network has opened support meetings in 10 communities, located in 5 different states.
The Parent Support Network™ is a program of The Youth Mental Health Project that seeks to provide support for parents* (any adult caregiver, including guardians, parents, grandparents, foster or step-parents, of a young person between the ages of 1 and 24) who are concerned about the mental well-being of their children through confidential, in-person, peer-to-peer meetings in local communities. 

Parent support meetings are either in-person or virtual, confidential, and free for all parents and caregivers who are concerned about their children who struggle with anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, or other emotional, behavioral, or mental health problems. A child does NOT need to have a diagnosis for a parent to benefit from meetings. The model is based on an open-dialogue concept and is driven by the needs of the parents in attendance at any given meeting. 

The Youth Mental Health Project partners with organizations and parents in communities to establish and build affiliates of The Parent Support Network. Volunteer parent Facilitators are vetted through an extensive application and interview process. Once accepted, Facilitators are required to participate in our training program and meet monthly with our staff to review progress and provide coaching support. Each local affiliate has access to our proprietary tools and materials and is furnished with customizable marketing materials and strategies to attract participants.  Facilitators are also provided with a Facilitators Manual, in addition to organizational tools and communications templates to help manage, promote, and coordinate monthly or weekly meetings. 

Providing parents concerned about their children’s mental health with a dependable and caring network, valuable peer support, and education in their local communities is essential to helping families move beyond crisis and enable them to find the help they need.

The data prior to COVID demonstrate the need: 
One in four adults in the U.S. (44.7 million) has a diagnosable mental health disorder.
Half of all lifetime cases of diagnosable mental health conditions begin before the age of 14, and 75% before the age of 24.
Mental health conditions are more common than heart disease, lung disease, and cancer combined.
Mental health disorders are the number one disability in the world, according to the World Health Organization.
Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder in the United States, half of which begin before the age of 8 years old.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in children ages 10 to 24.
