The Effective Altruism Global Health and Development Fund recommends grants with the aim of improving people's lives, typically in the poorest regions of the world where the need for healthcare and economic empowerment is greatest. This will be achieved primarily by supporting projects that:

- Directly provide healthcare, or preventive measures that will improve health, well-being, or life expectancy
- Directly provide services that raise incomes or otherwise improve economic conditions
- Provide assistance to governments in the design and implementation of effective policies

In addition, the Global Health and Development Fund has a broad remit, and may fund other activities whose ultimate purpose is to serve people living in the poorest regions of the world, for example by raising additional funds (e.g. [One for the World](https://www.1fortheworld.org/)) or by exploring novel financing arrangements (e.g. [Instiglio](https://www.instiglio.org/en/)).

The Fund manager recommends grants to GiveWell top charities as a baseline, but will recommend higher-risk grants they believe to be more effective (in expectation) than GiveWell top charities. As such, the fund makes grants with a variety of different risk profiles.

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is a global network of nonprofit organizations developing the roadmap for a sustainable, secure, and just protein supply. Industry alone will not meet this challenge at the scale or speed we need. GFI is accelerating the transformation of the food system by identifying solutions and mobilizing resources to make alternative proteins the default way meat is made.

GFI is a network of nonprofits around the world strategically based in the most critical economies for alternative protein advancement. In Asia, Europe, Brazil, India, Israel, and the U.S., GFI’s teams are mobilizing the international community to use markets and technology to replace harmful practices with ones that are better for the climate and biodiversity, for food security, and for global health.

GFI’s Focus
As a nonprofit, GFI is uniquely positioned to accelerate the transition to alternative proteins by focusing on three programmatic priorities:

-Cultivating a strong scientific ecosystem | GFI’s science and technology teams map out the most neglected areas that will allow alternative proteins to compete on taste and price. GFI meets these challenges by developing open-access research and resources, educating and connecting the next generation of scientists and entrepreneurs, and funding research that benefits alternative protein development across the sector. 

-Influencing policy and securing government funding | GFI’s policy teams ensure that alternative proteins are a part of the policy discussion around climate change mitigation and global health. In every region where GFI has a presence, teams advocate for government funding and incentives to transition to alternative proteins and are paving the way for the approval of novel proteins such as cultivated meat.

-Ensuring industry prioritizes alternative proteins | GFI’s corporate teams are creating a transformation of our global meat supply. GFI works to replicate past market transformations by showing companies of all sizes, from startups to multinational corporations, how alternatives to animal products can be profitable while meeting environmental, social, and governance goals.

The very real threats of climate change, global food insecurity, antibiotic resistance, and pandemics require us to imagine a different future of food. Alternative proteins are the solution that will securely and sustainably feed the world.

Do you want to help animals but find it hard to decide how? That's understandable. Trillions of animals suffer every day on farms and in the wild. The problem is vast and complex, but people around the world are making a difference.

Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in the United States dedicated to finding and promoting the most effective ways to help animals. We do this by evaluating and recommending high-impact charities, awarding strategic grants to promising projects, and raising critical funds for the animal advocacy movement. Our ultimate goal is to educate and empower individuals and organizations to make a significant and lasting positive impact on the lives of neglected animals who are often forgotten. ACE envisions a future in which no individual is given less than full moral consideration on the basis of any morally irrelevant feature of their identity, including species membership.

ACE has a unique and influential role within the effective animal advocacy movement. Our global team is composed of experienced professionals in animal advocacy, effective altruism, and research methodology. To date, we have rigorously evaluated 85 charities that work to end factory farming and create meaningful change for farmed and wild animals, and recommended 38 high-impact organizations as effective giving opportunities. Through our strategic grantmaking, we have distributed nearly $20 million to our Recommended Charities and promising advocacy projects around the globe. Since ACE began tracking this metric in 2014, we estimate that we’ve helped to influence at least $81 million within the animal advocacy movement. Over the years, we have built strong partnerships with organizations and researchers, amplifying our collective efforts to improve the lives of as many animals as possible.

Animal Charity Evaluators

The Effective Altruism Animal Welfare Fund aims to effectively improve the well-being of nonhuman animals, by making grants that focus on one or more of the following:

- Relatively neglected geographic regions or groups of animals
- Promising research into animal advocacy or animal well-being
- Activities that could make it easier to help animals in the future
- Otherwise best-in-class opportunities

The Animal Welfare Fund has historically supported many different interventions, including advocacy in neglected countries, research that improves our understanding of relevant issues, and campaigns that push large corporations to improve their farm animal welfare policies. In recent payouts, the Fund has made a number of small startup grants to emerging organizations, as well as grants to more established players in the space.

Grantmaking and Impact
The Animal Welfare Fund has recommended several million dollars' worth of grants to a range of organizations, including:

Supporting emerging animal welfare groups in a range of countries
The Fund has supported corporate and policy campaigns and movement building for farm animal welfare issues around the world, with grants to advocacy organizations working in 26 countries, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Czechia, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the United States.

Supporting research to improve the focus and efficacy of animal advocacy
In addition to funding direct work on animal welfare, the Fund also supports research that improves our understanding of how to most effectively help animals. This research has focused on better understanding the well-being of wild animals, which species are most promising to focus on, and  which interventions are the most effective at reducing animal suffering.

Supporting campaigns to reform corporate policies
Tens of billions of animals suffer as a result of their use in food production. By tackling this issue at the level of commercial supply chains, corporate campaigns can be high-leverage opportunities to improve the lives of tens of billions of animals. The Fund has granted to a range of organizations with relatively strong track records of securing commitments from large food companies; these organizations include Compassion in World Farming USA and Sinergia Animal.

Supporting research on and advocacy for alternative proteins
Finding culinary alternatives to meat is an important step toward reducing the suffering of animals raised for food. While commercial alternative protein companies are generally able to raise private funding, other organizations that build support for alternative proteins (like academic groups and grassroots organizations) are relatively underfunded. The Fund has granted to organizations around the world, including in the UK (CellAG), Israel (The Modern Agriculture Foundation), and globally (Cellular Agriculture Society).
