San Diego Architectural Foundation raises awareness about the value of excellence in our built environment.

Founded in 1978, the San Diego Architectural Foundation (SDAF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education and promotion of outstanding architecture, landscape, interior, and urban design to improve the quality of life for all San Diegans. We do this by curating exceptional events throughout the year that are open to both the design industry and the public at large. We explore how the issues impact our growing region, like the design of our homes, workplaces, schools and communities, as well as our health and well-being. Our goal is to inspire all San Diegans to discover the value of thoughtful design in the natural and built environment and the effect it has on the quality of our lives.

2020 was a terrible year for most of the world. Not so much for many of us lucky enough to work in computer games.

So this year I’m launching “Game Founders for Climate 2021” to enable those of us who have benefited from the rapid growth in games to give back to help combat the most important and urgent cause in the world - climate change.

To this end I have partnered with Mikko Kodisoja (Supercell), Jussi Laakkonen (Applifier/Unity), Kevin Chou (Kabam / Rally.io) and others to create a $500k matching donation fund that my friends at Founders Pledge have kindly agreed to help fulfil.

I know that together we can get this climate grant to $1 million at least. Every dollar donated will count for two between now and July 17 up to a $1 million total. Please sign up here, contribute what you can, and tell your friends.

The targets for this grant are organizations I have spent a lot of time with over the past year, who I am convinced can deliver the most climate impact per dollar donated.

[Founders Pledge Climate Fund](https://www.every.org/climate.change.fund): Much like a private equity fund, the Founders Pledge Climate Fund is structured to provide solution agnostic grants at the time and place where they can have the biggest situational impact on carbon emissions and carbon capture. As a company builder, I have learned that talent, timing, and leverage matters in all new ventures. The Founders Pledge Climate Fund team are exceptionally talented thinkers and doers on how to deploy funds toward emissions reduction impact most effectively globally.

[Silverlining.ngo](https://www.silverlining.ngo/): As an entrepreneur I’ve learned the hard way how important it is to have a plan B in case plan A fails. Silverlining has a DARPA-like model promoting research into upper atmosphere modeling, solar radiation management, marine cloud brightening and other “last resort” actions for use as a temporary measure to cool the climate in case despite our best efforts on emissions reduction we hit some unforeseen tipping point and need more time. This research is neglected but critical should we end up at the upper end of possible warming scenarios in the coming decades. Think of it as an insurance policy for the planet.

Freedom for Immigrants is an abolitionist organization that envisions a world without prisons or cages of any kind. We work to abolish immigration incarceration, recognizing we are part of a broader movement fighting for our freedom at the intersection of mass incarceration, immigration enforcement, and the deprivation of Black, brown, and Indigenous people’s autonomy. To empower our communities, we organize alongside and follow the leadership of currently and formerly incarcerated immigrants. We recognize our work is necessarily tied to broader efforts to eradicate white supremacy and the systems that sustain oppression. By cultivating the community-centered solutions that breathe life into our collective liberation, we actively build a future in which all people can move freely and thrive.

The Children’s Book Project gives books to children who need them for equity in literacy, learning, and life.

Children’s Book Project is one of San Francisco’s oldest and most prolific organizations promoting literacy equity by ensuring access to books for children who need them. Our innovative model is designed to redistribute book assets so children living and going to school in under-resourced communities have books of their own and develop a love of reading—ultimately paving the way for lifelong learning and improved literacy in our city and region.

Children’s Book Project takes a cradle-to-graduation approach by providing books at every reading level, from infant board books to teen/young adult titles. In 2022, our women-led nonprofit received and processed nearly 155,000 new and gently used books donated by individuals, families, businesses, publishers, authors, and book drives; close to 140,000 books found their way into classrooms, doctors’ offices, shelters, daycares, and most importantly, homes with children and families who need and want them. Since our founding 31 years ago, we have surpassed 3.1 million books distributed to educators and nonprofit service providers across San Francisco and 24 additional California counties.
