Local Abortion Access

Exchange program for visiting monastic scholars to help modernize education at Tibetan Buddhist institutions in India.

Since 2011, Kamalashila Initiative (KI) has offered its Visiting Scholars Program as a humble contribution to His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama's vision of modernizing education at Tibetan Buddhist institutions in India. Here, Buddhist scholars from KI partner institutions in India are invited to participate in a 10-week, intensive English as a Second Language program at the University of California, Irvine. 

While Visiting Scholars build their academic and linguistic capacity, they also engage in exciting cultural exchange activities in partnership with the local community. In doing so, KI leverages the wisdom of its Visiting Scholars, gained through a lifetime's dedication to Buddhist practice, to help increase the wellbeing of the local community through meditation and the cultivation of altruism.

Kamalashila Initiative

The Children’s Book Project gives books to children who need them for equity in literacy, learning, and life.

Children’s Book Project is one of San Francisco’s oldest and most prolific organizations promoting literacy equity by ensuring access to books for children who need them. Our innovative model is designed to redistribute book assets so children living and going to school in under-resourced communities have books of their own and develop a love of reading—ultimately paving the way for lifelong learning and improved literacy in our city and region.

Children’s Book Project takes a cradle-to-graduation approach by providing books at every reading level, from infant board books to teen/young adult titles. In 2022, our women-led nonprofit received and processed nearly 155,000 new and gently used books donated by individuals, families, businesses, publishers, authors, and book drives; close to 140,000 books found their way into classrooms, doctors’ offices, shelters, daycares, and most importantly, homes with children and families who need and want them. Since our founding 31 years ago, we have surpassed 3.1 million books distributed to educators and nonprofit service providers across San Francisco and 24 additional California counties.

QuestBridge creates programs for talented low-income students to access exceptional educational and life opportunities.

QuestBridge has successfully shaped the lives of the most promising, low-income students in the nation and has helped them unlock billions in scholarships.

Every year, there are over 30,000 outstanding high school students from low-income backgrounds who are academically qualified to attend the nation’s top colleges. Over 80% of them do not apply to even ONE selective college and they remain highly under-represented on leading college campuses.

Many of these promising students assume they can’t afford an education at a top college. Others lack the education about what it takes to apply to a selective college, or simply assume they can’t be admitted.

When low-income students miss the opportunity to apply to and attend great colleges, this has a profound effect on their futures. Many end up reaching below their actual academic potential, or they don't attend college at all. Of those who attend college, most don't graduate.

This vast amount of untapped talent equates to a staggering loss in human potential. As America strives to remain competitive in our global society, promising students from across the economic spectrum are vital to the wealth and future of our nation-at-large.

Using innovative data methods to target and reach thousands of high-achieving, low-income students, we provide programs that help students reach their fullest potential, which could include attending a top-tier college on a full scholarship. We also provide these students with ongoing resources and a supportive community of Scholars to help them thrive in college and beyond.

"Pregnancy is more than thirty times more dangerous than abortion. One study estimates that a nationwide ban would lead to a twenty-one-per-cent rise in pregnancy-related deaths. Some of the women who will die from abortion bans are pregnant right now.

Physicians in prohibition states have already begun declining to treat women who are in the midst of miscarriages, for fear that the treatment could be classified as abortion. One woman in Texas was told that she had to drive fifteen hours to New Mexico to have her ectopic pregnancy—which is nonviable, by definition, and always dangerous to the mother—removed. Misoprostol, one of the abortion pills, is routinely prescribed for miscarriage management, because it causes the uterus to expel any remaining tissue. Pharmacists in Texas, fearing legal liability, have already refused to prescribe it. If a miscarriage is not managed to a safe completion, women risk—among other things, and taking the emotional damage for granted—uterine perforation, organ failure, infection, infertility, and death."
